I haven't...

Could be worse mate, you could barrack for Port Adelaide :D

Would love to hear if the two blokes who brought Fyfe in this week had him on the 'no go list' earlier in the year (probably related to his dodgy shoulders) and have now decided that he is almost a must have. He's close to maximum price and Freo have one of the toughest runs home, is it matter of getting him in to negate the ones around you?

Bahaha, true, it's my only consolation this year - at least we're ranked higher than them. I don't think I'll get the wooden spoon out if I go to the showdown though.

Hadn't thought about that with Fyfe... didn't really look at his run home :/. Who else to upgrade to though... *ponders*

Tarquin has Bartel as his 7th mid. Very good backup at the price he got him for.

How many games will bartel play for him without having an injury? 3? Prob max of 60-80 points up from isles. (don't have access to the team as I'm on the iphone) might've been better off getting enough money to get another mid/fwd who could cover fwd byes as well. Just a thought.

I still would have picked Montagna instead of Bartel as a 7th mid for a few reasons.

Montagna only 317k
Bartel 287k

Bartel is 30k cheaper but if you take out both games in which these players have been injured or subbed than Bartel was avg 98 before this week and Montagna 101. But i think from last year Montagna hasnt really changed his role and with Stkilda winning 5/7past games or whatever it is now the side was starting to head towards 2010 form. Montagna avg 112 the year before while Jimmy avg about 105 if my memory serves me correct. This year Jimmy has played less on ball and been a more outside wingman or half forward flank which has resulted in less points. So i would have backed in Montagna instead of Bartel. Also Bartel has that bye remaining and Monty doesnt.

@Tarquin
Did you consider any other players like Montagna? or even Cooney with his past 4 week record leading into last week.

This week he gained 16 points and he still has to replace Boyd, Stanton and M. Murphy without taking into account injuries/suspensions.

In theory its a good move to have someone like Bartel as your 7th mid but I think Faves raises the key point here: Sam Iles.

As the young GC mids tire, the seasoned body of Iles will continue to pick up the slack in their midfield. Has scored 104, 86, 67 (injury in the last), 92, 85 in the last five.

You don't open up a DP link by bringing in Bartel so it really comes down to him v Iles. Bartels 120 on the weekend was timely but thats an anomaly rather than the norm this year. I dare say there will be weeks where they score pretty much the same. Will be intriguing viewing over the next month.

I will attempt to explain my thought process at the time. This will potentially give away my plan this week as well. My plan was to do one upgrade and that was to select a guy called Shaw. Had it locked in all week and then BANG, plans changed. (Lucky for me that I found out before the trade) Otherwise having Didak and Shaw BOTH in my team again would have killed me for the second time.

Interesting that a couple of teams brought Bartel in even though he has a bye left and plays the Pies in the last round. Cheap as he's ever been I know but at this stage of the year I would've thought it's super premiums in the mids only.

He is my M7 and has a lovely run home.

That was basically my thought, I did not expect Illes to keep pumping out good scores.

Without injury or rest it was going to be 4 games, due to Bartel's run home and Illes predicted averages, I thought it was worth the risk.

Montagna was HIGH on my radar (even if I traded the tosser out a few weeks ago.)

It basically came down to the difference in cost and the run home, I will talk about the run home later in this post. If I traded in Montagna, I would struggle to upgrade Jacobs/Puopolo/Otten... to a player I had my eye on.

This week he gained 16 points and he still has to replace Boyd, Stanton and M. Murphy without taking into account injuries/suspensions.

I can honestly say that I did not expect Illes to knock out 104, so I was kicking myself a little before Bartel's score.

We have different thoughts on what Illes would average and Bartel would average, this is why I guess I made the trade and you would not make the same trade in my position. I had 5 trades remaining with $114,000 in the bank, I thought I could afford to go slightly more aggressive and drop my LTI trades one more down.

This is when Bartel was going to cover for me.

Sam Mitchell - Bartel v Brisbane - That screams 100+

No Body/Pendlebury - Bartel v Richmond - That screams to me 100+ and if Pendlebury is a late out, another bonus for me with Bartel as my cover.
(Just have a gut feeling Pendlebury will be rested)

Stanton - Bartel v Melbourne - I can play match ups and roll the dice he will score more than Stanton and have Stanton has my M7?

Boyd - Bartel v Gold Coast - Screaming 100+ again!

Stanton - Bartel v Adelaide - Once again, playing matchups maybe with Stanton as M7

Bye

Murphy - Bartel v Sydney - Okay, this is a little risky, but still good cover.

Stanton - I can play the match ups again...

Why I did not go the DP link path is because I already had Didak as my F8/M7, so not sure I needed it as the cost to get someone I wanted was around $100,000 MORE than Bartel. I would prefer to use that $100,000 on fixing my backline, which I thought was a weaker position. I feel that with my use of $114k, I can obtain two decent upgrades, which is good going in my eyes.

That was my logic, it has only gained me 16 points, I thought it would have gained me round 30 points last week, but such is life.

The logic is definitely sound but where has that got anyone this year? :p

I have my fingers crossed for you with your Bartel predictions. I too would have pencilled in similar scores against the likes of Rich/GC but knowing him, he will be relegated to a HFF and score a measly 60! Having said that though, looks to be playing a nice role at the moment so you may have timed the trade well.

God I hope you're right about Bartel, LM. My league opponents have been hanging shit on me for having him as my M6, saying that he is a has been. Surely with the soft draw (League bye withstanding) he can average 110+ for his remaining 6 games, if played in the midfield?

PS love your team. AWESOME!

So Sammy Fisher next week Tarqs? Stop picking up all my players, our teams are getting too similar.

Haha, i was just trying to work out which premium defender i think he will bring in

Will he go something unique or will it be Fisher. I cant see him using 2 trades to get Broughton into his team, although he probably wants him.

IIRC he has about 100k left remaining so that puts Enright out of distance which means Fisher seems the logical choice. Any chance of something unique (Symes for some excitement)

With no Ablett, ROK, SJ, Enright who have all been top in there positions its hard to see how you have done so well this season Tarqs. Great effort. Also great review and reasons to why you picked Bartel. If i was in your situation i probably would have gone Monty but the extra 30k was important for next weeks trades.

Monty also has injury concerns where as bartel seems to be fit. Out of the two I would've gone bartel, but I would've prob gone after a mid/fwd meaning they could cover fwd byes as well.

16x4=64points so prob need more than that...

It beats my trade in of Heath shaw last week, gotta love relying on the thurs night teams!

if u take out jimmy's 2, hes averaging 100. stupid not to get him at his current price regardless of finals bye. will also play wing rest of season (has done this since coming back).

The Suckling out has really messed with my head. Have a few options going around my head at the moment. I have 6 trades and $183,500 in the bank.

OPTION 1
Hibberd > Birchall
Didak > Sylvia

OPTION 2
Hibberd > Martin
Mzungu > Sylvia

Both options will push Stanley to the bench (good for this week) and he will provide Deledio cover (next week), Gibbs cover (Rd 23) and Heppell cover (rd 24).

It then will give me a forward bench of either, option 1 - Isaac Smith, Mzungu and Callinan; or option 2 - Isaac Smith, Didak and Callinan. I have Goodes to cover next week and then SJ and Chappy (Rd 22).

Would love to still have Didak there for his potential, but would definitely prefer to get in Birchall over Martin. Catch 22.

Would like to maximise points over the next couple of weeks to help get me some cred by finishing top 1000. Hmmm...

The main M/F that I did not have and would have considered were the following.

Fyfe, Pavlich, O'Keefe - I can say that I view Bartel as having a higher ceiling than those players and was a LOT cheaper!

It would have required me to upgrade either Krakouer or Mzungu to obtain one of these players.

I would be slightly disappointed if Bartel only averaged 16 more points than Illes for the remainder of the season.

All quiet on the Famous DT coaches front! Are you all busy mulling over how you're going to cover your missing premiums in the upcoming multi-bye round? I'm sure there must be some coaches who have Goodes, ROK and Roo, but I'm guessing most will have adequate cover.

After last week's high scores all round, I'm looking forward to a week where there might be some teams who struggle to put a decent team on the park, so I can scramble a little higher up the rankings.

It's looking like most coaches are starting to run low on trades, and I'm interested to know whether people are going to be keeping trades for LTIs/sideways trades or whether they will blow all their trades early in an attempt to get premo cover in all lines? Personally, I've got 3 left, but am planning to use two of those this week to trade an additional premium into my mids and fwds.

I've still got Heath Shaw sitting on my bench, but for the time being, he can stay there. Danny Stanley should be good enough to cover for him, and if he continues to score well, then I'll save that last trade for LTI.

Anyway, sorry if anyone objects to my ramblings in the famous coaches thread, but it was almost at risk of dropping off the first page!
