Fantastic Drafting

Firstly I would like to congratulate myself by picking Darling and Lycett in the draft game. I really think it has been a fantastic draft by the WC we have covered a lot of bases with our picks - backman, tall marking forwards, ruck, midfield. Obviously we didn't take a small forward but we have a couple of young developing guys on our list and will no doubt pick up a least 1 small forward in the pre-season draft or rookie drafts.
Another thing with this draft as opposed to others, I would expect all these players to physically handle AFL next year, Gaff has exceptional endurance and the other 2 are built like men.
Obviously time will tell if we recruited well, but at this stage I'm as happy as a pig in shit, oh and did I mention I picked Darling and Lycett in the draft game.

Yeah I remember that. Someone gave u some stick for being too optimistic. :thumbsu:

Maybe the pessemists are experiencing an endorphin release after a successful draft and don't know quite how to come to grips with it.
Give them time though Pat they will recharge their negative energy and be back in no time at all:D

Another success from this draft is that we didn't draft anyone with a surname beginning with S, it was getting beyond a joke.

You're not Worsfold are you? That's like playing Kennedy, Hansen and Lynch all over again.

Naa, it is probably too tall but Darling was pretty mobile in 2009, so if he can get his body right some time on the flank while Wilson continues his crack at the FF spot would be ok.

I mean, are we just gonna kick Wilson out, or wait for him to play a bad game and then replace him with Darling?

very true, we were stacking the odds against ourselves. I mean, what are the chances that every player we draft is a gun, and what are the chances that all the players we draft are guns and have a name starting with 'S'?!

Very strong point

Thankyou. Swift swerves beautifully out of the pack - short pass to Smith who picks up on the bounce shrugs off a tackle -handpasses to S Selwood on the half back flank shuffles back turns in a big circle - Shepherd lays a strong shepherd - S Selwood shoots off the HBF gives off another short pass to - Stevenson who side steps Salvahngi and sends a searing short pass to Stevens who goes on a searching run inside 50 and sends it right over the goal umpires head.
It's just too much.

Needs more Shuey. And correct spelling of Sheppard.

As much as I love our picks so far, I have to agree with Stibbard in that we weren't ruthless enough with turning over our list considering the strength of this draft. Having said that, we were tied into keeping a lot of players we would have delisted otherwise by poor management.

Hopefully next year we can get rid of Hansen, Lynch, Bones, Nicoski, Dalziell and McGinnity at a minimum and finish our rebuild through the draft. Speaking of which, does anyone have any idea of the quality of next years draft?

Next year will be similarly compromised - so wouldn't be surprised to see a small to mid cull - Hansen/Nico and Bones would be certainly gone, Lynch perhaps if we can find another ruck option (not necessarily a pure ruckman though)

I read some reports early in the year that 2012 looks like a bumper crop

It appears the strategy is to have concentrated picks in the compromised drafts - then hopefully expand come 2012.

Upgrading 3 rookies (all deserved) was part of the reason, we also seem to go for quality over quantity in terms of only using top 30 picks in the main. Statisticaly that seems pretty wise as the jewels in the rough for 18yo's is pretty rare.

As for the selections

4. Was pretty comfortable with picking Gaff as he is a bit more outside than previous early draft pick midfield selections so adds to the mix. His gut running should be ideally suited to the wide expanses of Subi although Polec would have been a great selection as well.

26. Darling was obviously fairly hard to ignore at this selection but he did slide for a reason. Will be interesting to see how he is used at AFL level. Given that he has played a couple of seasons at senior level he could be in contention for a position in round 1 which could be pretty exciting as has been mentioned, he will add a bit of mongrel into the team

29 Lycett was a great get as well. We are a light on for ruckmen despite recruiting Nic Nat and i can't really think of any ruckmen that would have been worth a punt in the rookie draft

Now all we need is to a add a bit more pace and possibly a tall defender. The good news is a few likely types were not drafted.

Yeah, but what Stibbard needs to realise that not every club, oh hang on it was only one, had copious amounts of selections inside the top 30.

I'd like him to name me more than 1 player outside the top 35 that he would have drooled over and said "he's a must have".

But swannies ... Stibbard never does..... read all his assesments,, they all are as weak as piss... very Meeeh.... He just always talks shit....

i dont think we were that conservative. picking up darling is a risk according to the media, some compare him to franklin and such. fact is we need a bit of a mongrel and arrogance in the team and darling may be the x-factor which we've been looking for sometime.

i think the real clean up will happen at the end of next year. regardless whether worsfold keeps his job or not, hansen, lynch, nicoski, bones, and other list cloggers will be given the boot providing the team with hopefully 4-5 selections. i dont know though whether the gc will be given a charity draft again though.
