Fremantle receive: Farren Ray, Lindsay Gilbee & 4th round draft pick
Bulldogs receive:Paul Haselby, Ryan Murphy & 2nd round draft pick

I think the biggest question has got to be what is Ray's disposal like? It seems to be a pretty constant query over his game (along with his lack of bulk) We've already got players like Duffield (and Browne when fit) who have no problems getting the ball, but continually turn it over - I can't see any point in trading for another player who has the same problem.

Tony_Clifton said that the Bulldogs have invested a few years in Ray to get him to this stage - he seems to still be pretty 'average' and as has already been said, skinny, as far as midfielders go. Freo have invested 4 years into Murphy. He's had a bad season, but he's just starting to bulk up and has a very good kick. Go back and watch a few games from the winning run of 9 last year and see what he adds to the forward line - he was playing with a touch of arrogance out of full-forward and was demanding the ball. He's shown what he can do and I still think there is room for him in the Freo side. Farren Ray is not going to be the saviour of our poor midfield - I think giving the Bulldogs Murphy for him would be too big a price to pay.

If you consider him skinny then wouldn't that be a potential upside?

Assuming he's able to put on weight. He's already had 4 pre-seasons at AFL level and is built like an 18 year old. I know the bulldogs are short on cash, but they must have atleast one weight bench? It's not like a summer in Perth will suddenly add 8-9 kilo's.

From the looks of it Ray is destined to be a skinny outside player for his career like Lappin at Carlton. Is that what we are looking for?

If his skills aren't good/very good we don't want him. We already have Gilmore and Peake who can receive the ball and run and carry then bang the ball on the boot to no one in particular.

Warnock is skinny...

And that's why he fell to pick 42 in the draft. He also put on around 15 kilo's last year, if rival clubs were confident that he'd put the weight on so quickly he would have been selected much earlier. Ray looks like he's added one or two kilo's a year since being drafted 4 years ago. Maybe some of Mum's home cooking would do the trick if Ray moved back to Perth, but anyone who names their son Farren Ray probably prepares dishes with soybeans, poppy seeds and wheat grass.

If Paul Hasleby suffered the same illness as Schammer he'd still weigh more than Ray. :p

That's a crap deal. Ray's worth a 2nd round pick so we're basically giving away Murphy and Hasleby for Gilbee.

Agree with every word of this.

If Haselby and Murphy both want out it would be interesting. We get the bad end of the stick but its better than Hase going into the PSD. Gilbee could be turned into a very good midfielder, not sure why they play him as a loose defender.

The problem with Farren is he is still learning the game. You might say hang on he has been playing AFL for a few years now and yes your right but Farren didnt pick up an oval football until he was 16. He was a pretty handy round ball player, wasnt until his school team were short he filled in for them and carved up with his run and pace. Peel Thunder put him onto the development squad and was playing colts soon enough then progressed quickly through reserves and onto the league side. Then he got drafted 18 months after that first footy match for his school at number 4 by the dogs.

Personally I still think his best football is 3 years away. His frame is still small, dont forget he is only about 21. His disposal improves every year. I am a bit biased having known Farren since he was about 8-9 but we should be seriously looking at him.

I agree. Tall, fast young midfielder from WA, and we're not sure if we want him? You can't have too many of these types IMO. Just don't trade high picks for him. Murphy for Ray = classic win win trade. Both sides addressing a weakness by trading a surplus.

I dunno. Wasn't Clive a "handy" roundball player who was a latecomer to AFL. How long did it take him to learn our game? Some might mischieviously say he never did...

I think we should be searching for (and retaining) good footballers. Not good athletes.

Hase is a good footballer.

true but we should not give away good picks for him. personally id be targeting matt moody, and high draft picks.

I wouldnt give our picks away either.

Matt Moody may come cheap as he couldnt get a game for Brisbane this year, showed a bit in the NAB Cup tho.

Murphy will be involved if we chase Farren Ray.

no way!

we could get moody for nothing, he is in delist territory

In reality - so is Webster. If they both want a new home where they might get new opportunities (I don't know if that's the case) - then surely a trade is a better option as then they, and the clubs, are more secure that they/the club will get the desired outcome.

Will never happen. Gilbee is as untouchable as Cooney and Griffen. I wouldnt even consider your 1st rounder.

Ray on the other hand might be an option but dont think he'll go cheaply either. 20 y.o with over 60 games experiance is hard to come by.
