With the Bulldogs (Liberatore) and Carlton (Buckley), both having two gun sons of guns coming through, it got me wondering what our father-son requirements are.

It always seems to pop up here in Melbourne with clubs like Geelong, Richmond, Collingwood, Esseondon etc, but I never hear about it in WA. What are the requirements for someone to be eligible to be picked up

Does anyone know of any sons of guns coming through the ranks?

Are we even entitled to any father-son picks?

If we are entitled to ex-South players sons, why wasn't Clem Michael picked up under a father-son rule?

I thought he was?
Peake was

I'm sure years ago I heard something about a second Michael boy coming through, must've been a dud.

The Wizard has a few sons. If any of his boys can play like him and want to play AFL....:thumbsu:

Not sure where it stands with us and Melbourne though.

He definately played 100+ games for Freo so assuming Farmer also played 100 games for Melbourne I assume they'd be able to choose. Didn't the Cloke boys have the option to go to either Collingwood or Richmond? Benny Boy had the choice of 3 clubs but that loop hole has been closed.

Heath Black and Dessie have sons too, but they'd be in a similar age bracket to Farmer's boys (8-12??) so they're a few years off yet.

Last time I checked the eligibility was the draftee's father has to have played 100 games for an AFL club or 150 games of a WAFL club affiliate prior to 1995. If the player has played more than 100 games for more than 1 club then the draftee can choose which club to go to

Found the current rules.

Kinda sucks that West Coast had the pick of West Aussie players prior to us coming in. I notice a Lockyer in last years U16 team. Didn't the West Coast Lockyer come from East Freo? If its his son, then West Coast have dibs on him.

[*]Until 2015, Fremantle can select any player whose father has made 150 WAFL appearances for East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Perth or Swan Districts.
[*]

I'm pretty sure that they also had to complete the 150 games prior to 1995. So lets say WAFL player X had 3 sons in the early 90's while he was playing WAFL and played his 150th game for South Freo in 1997 then his kids wouldn't be eligible.

Not 100% on that but wasn't that the issue with Gibbs and the Morton's? Their Dad's played enough games just in the wrong timeframe.

I saw the Wiz down at Garden City last night and geez it looks like he has been grazing in the same paddock as Heath Black. He wouldve already added 10kg id reckon. Back to his sons though I think he has two boys the eldest about 12, not sure about his talent though. Surely he would have something!
A lot of our former players have produced boys recently unlike the mob down the road. Matt Carr, McManus, the Wiz, Heath Black and Dale Kickett are just a few I can think of that have basically produced I think either all boys or mostly boys. if one or two of these became good players we would be laughing

The biggest "miss" for a potential father son draftee may well be Brandon Matera. I believe Wally played 146 games for South. May well have played the 4 needed but his talents were being wasted by Fitzroy and the w***ers up the road

Is a big miss - but it is likely that we would have been forced to give up our first round pick for him in any case. The recent rule changes have prevented the Gems falling through to the third round like Hawkins at Geelong.

The only way the Father Son rule will work really well is if we have a late first round pick and the potential draftee is a likely top 5. Matera appears to be first round material but at this early stage prob not the top 5.

Yep it seems the Eagles are good at producing girls and we have a pretty good production line of boys. Thinking about it, don't they say that fit guys are more likely to produce girls ?. Oh well this is one thing I am happy for our boys to be not 100% fit, their talents were in another area.

Now if only we could get a cross pollination of the Pav and Sandi genes ......

Any half decent WAFL players for our eligble period (till 1995) mostly didn't get to 150 WAFL games because they would have been drafted by the Eagles or other Victorian clubs.

We have had one - Brett Peake. I don't think we will get anymore until the sons of our recently retired players like Wiz, Heath and Shany Mac come through in about 11 years.

He would not be eligible as a F/S but there is a young Joshua Browne who has just blitzed the field in the little athletics sprints for the 6-8 year olds State finals and is now looking forward to his Auskick season starting. His Father is Andrew (from a story in my local rag) - same Andrew?
