AUSTRALIA has become one of a small group of former British colonies to keep the Union Jack on its flag, after Fiji moved for change.

In my opinion, this and a change to a republic need to happen ASAP.

The only think holding up a change in flag from where I sit is the prospect of the union jack being replaced by the aboriginal flag, which would be a huge step backwards.

The new flag needs to have no reference to "groups" be they foreign, minority or majority.

Perhaps if a flag that wasn't horrible was proposed?

Not to mention that I personally feel a much bigger connection to our current flag than to the Eureka flag and I expect many others would agree.
agree, the eureka flag is next to meaningless to me.

The simpler the better, such as the Canadian Flag.

The problem with the Republic campaign is that no-one has a model that can be easily sold to the public. The republic debate has fallen over several times already, and I've not seen any real support for changing of the flag.

Do we need to be a republic?

Do we need a new flag?

It's breathtaking the measures Australians have voted down in Referendums.

Fair Elections - carried in no states.
Democratic Elections - carried in one state
Rights and Freedoms - carried in no states

The Republican movement have a big hill to climb. First step is to accept 1999 was a failing of their making, and not a result of anything John Howard did.

I think this is a pretty pointless topic that doesn't much matter either way, but I would be pretty disappointed if we adopted the Eureka flag. It's basically the Australian equivalent of the Stars & Bars.

Not sure Fiji is a good example for us to be following. Their 'prime minister', Frank Bainimarama, who is proposing the flag change, is a military dictator. He seized power in a coup in 2006 and deposed the elected government. There have been no elections since then. He is making these changes with no mandate from the people.

I'd like to know how that thing could in any way historically represent scattered tribes that had no notions of a flag.

It's a piece of modern jingoism, nothing more.

Shhhh. ;)

Past and future all combined in our current flag, I hope its never changed. :thumbsu:
