Opinion First Captain under Walsh?

Might be too strong a word.

Still, I'd hope an incoming coach had a pretty good idea of where we're at and his plan long before he takes the reigns.

You just wonder if we could have made any progress yet if we're still in the assessment stage.
I gather Walsh has decided on the likely captain, but no rush to announce & wants to take his time in case any more information comes to light.

Pretty sure it will be announced well before the season starts.

We took forever to announce VB as captain when he took over from Goodwin from memory.

Don't think waiting is a big issue, especially with a new coach plus Glass, O'Keefe coming in from the outside. You'd have ideas coming in of course but seeing how the group responds to your methods and philosophies would shape your thinking more than any preconceptions.

Maybe Phil knows and just wants to wait for whatever reason to make the announcement?

Here is my take. It's Sloane but they have not sorted out his new contract yet. They don't want to announce it yet with question marks over his long term commitment to the club. Once he's signed they will announce him as Captain.
I thought he has signed just not been announced.

When Allefgib communicated with Shutts he said there was still work to do. Did I get that right Al?
I would assume whoever it is would get paid more just for being captain?

VB isn't an above average AFL player. His 2013 b&f position is about where he would sit in any middle of the road club. At one of the better clubs, he would be lucky to get a game.

As an outsider looking in, Dangerfield has the ability to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and will his team to victory, the perfect match day Skipper! Give it to him and play the guilt card to sign. If he walks at seasons end, no one (bar Port supporters) will remember the 'mistake' Adelaide make, however the stigma of being a poor character will follow him for far longer right around Australia!

Totally agree.

Dangerfield is the perfect choice for captain. He can be a match-winner single-handedly as evidenced by already being a dual All-Australian at a young age. Walsh said the captain has to be able to perform match days and be in the best 3 players in the club.

He is brilliant with the media - loves it in fact - and the media love him. He is clean cut, communicative, relaxed and would represent the club every bit as well as VB has in recent years (first class).

As for your last point about the guilt card, I think it is a good one. He may well have signed on anyway, but as skipper the chances of that happening increase dramatically.

If Danger were to be made captain and then still want to leave, it isn't the club that would look bad, it would be Danger - who would look like a selfish ungrateful prick by deserting the club that drafted him, allowed him an extra year at home to complete his studies, and then rewarded his efforts with the captaincy.

Even if Danger had already signed on for the future years, he would be my automatic choice as skipper. the guilt card is just an added bonus IMO.

IMO Danger is THE man to lead this club to its next flag :thumbsu:

The media would absolutely spin it as a "stupid Crows" move if we named Danger as Captain and he left.

"Why would you name Dangerfield Captain and try and guilt him into staying while knowing he's likely going to walk out the door when you have capable guys like Tex and Sloane to do the job" type rubbish.

Spoke to someone at the club over the break and their opinion was Tex Walker. Its only the persons opinion based on their 1st impression of Walsh. Wants on field leadership from a lock best 22. Tex is our best on field leader.

Lock 22 player means VB is unfortunately certainly out of the race.

Would a guy like Danger accept the captaincy if he was entertaining leaving the club?

What is a guy like danger? Would a guy like danger leave the club?

Enjoyed the post macca23, but can you specify when Walsh said the captain has to be in the best three players at the club? It's the first I've heard it.

Quit writing Rucci's articles for him!:p

He never said that. Walshy just said he values on field performance over anything else in a captain. That alone almost puts a line through VB but puts Tex, Danger, Sloane and Talia in contention.

Wow he's came on leaps and bounds since his first couple of years.

Look at dat Rat haircut behind Tex

Yeh, the Rat is probably thinking he needed to do something different to get noticed. I also hope he gets a good chance this year,
It will be interesting to see which & how many left footers start getting games this year with Walsh saying he likes a few in the side.

Thanks, I remember him saying that he valued onfield performance highly in a captain, but thought I may have missed something.
