Pretty sure we were going to grab him but Sydney used the Father Son rule.
Correct, we actually placed a bid on him. Obviously this was before the current F/S rules so even though we were willing to pick him up with an earlier pick, Sydney just needed to use their later pick to secure Mitchell.

Also lost his dad as a development (?) coach because of this, he moved state to be with his son.

Classic people still making excuses and picking up on minor issues instead of this thread's main point: our drafting is poor to average and our first round selections are almost always busts. It is a serious issue and something that has affected the club for years. We all like sitting down and talking about Fyfe, Neale, and Barlow, but we never sit down and be honest about the major misses we've had.

By your original post.. Fyfe wasn't first round ;). But Morabito was great during his first season. Played 23/24 possible games. Then the ACL injury happened. The rest of 2009 Draft was utter crap. Crichton was ok, but Joel Houghton at pick 30ish. Did get a nice pick up in Roberton.

But a new thread need to be started on success in Rookie Drafts:
2002- Aaron Sandilands- Pick 33- 241 games
2003: Steven Dodd- Pick 51- 101 games
2004: Paul Duffield - Pick 10 - 171 games
2009: Matt de Boer- Pick 19- 135 games
Clancee Pearce- Pick 48
2010: Michael Barlow - Pick 8
Ales Silvagni (still on Seniors List)
2012: Lee Spurr- Pick 8
2013: Matt Taberner (Still on Seniors List)
2015: Ethan Hughes

Not a bad list.
We had pick 36 and we got either bollenhagen or Houghton. Swans used pick 38 on Sam Reid in the 2009 draft

Imagine if we had a recruiter, that put a focus on recruiting talented big men, rather than highly skilled flankers. Our first round picks could of looked like this:

2006: Kurt Tippett (taken the pick after Collard)
2007: Lachie Henderson (taken after Palmer)
2008: Michael Hurley (although Hill was a good get at 3)
2009: John Butcher or Michael Talia (Butcher would of been the more likely pick, bust)
2010: Jack Darling
2011: No KPP's of note available at our pick.
2012: Brodie Grundy (taken the next pick)
Cale hooker was also pick 50 odd in the 2007 draft. Taylor walker Was pick 75 that year too. Hell in 2012, after we got Simpson, mason shaw and Marco paper one was taken just before we got Tanner Smith.

Taylor Walker was a NSW scholarship player.

As above Walker was never on the table. Paperone is a C grade utility and Shaw had been delisted!

He was a F/S though, which meant we had no access to him

We can't say that they would develop the same as they ended up developing at their club. In 08 our best midfielder pretty much was Palmer. And if people think Mayne is a shocking kick, they need to recall Butcher's efforts last year. Tippett would have left, and Grundy was threatening to do likewise.

Palmer is a very interesting player. Kicking 9 goals 3 behinds from 6 games.
Compared to 7 goals 9 behinds from 7 games in 2016 for Mayne.

Palmer is only behind Walters and Pav at Freo and 1 goal behind Pav ( despite Pav playing 1 game more ) who has had an inaccurate year with 10 goals 15 points.

Looks like Palmers kicking is improving.

In 2006 we didn't need forwards as we had Murphy, Campbell, Pav, Longmuir and were getting Tarrant.
2007 same deal. Palmer was a gun midfielder who was played as a HFF under Harvey and had his confidence shattered when Harves stood over him after the Barlow incident, making him lose a whole bunch of confidence. He won the Rising Star remember?
2008 Hill or Naitanui was going to be our pick. Rich was the only other one we looked at.
2009. Talia would've been good but hindsights great.
2010. Our biggest mistake. Everyone knows that. However at the time Pitt was a slider and we got him at a bargain. Darling should have come to us but we decided against it because of his "off field issues". This is really the only one we stuffed up.
2012. Grundy said in interviews he wanted to play in Vic. He was always going to leave.
