Apparently its been brought up at the AFLPA that the AFL needs to address the issue around First Round picks getting a three year contract when first drafted.
As it stands all first rounders have a set 3 year contract, while second and later draft picks have a two year.
The issue is that after their second year, good performing second round picks can have a higher paid third year than first rounders.
For instance, Player A is taken at pick 2. Player B taken at pick 23.
Both players have a great season and want an extension.
Player A can only be paid the set rate in his third year, while Player B can be paid market value, meaning Player A gets 120,000 a year plus match payments, while player B can get 600k in his third year.
Apparently the AFLPA is asking the AFL to look at allowing First rounders to be able to get market rates in their third year if part of an extension.
