First slip?

Warne comes back in February.

Who gets the role at first slip, Warne or Hayden?

I voted for Warne.

I believe both are of similar quality in the position, but i feel that Hayden is more capable of fielding in other positions, therefore i'd put Warne in beside Gilly.

Although he did drop Bevan on 1 yesterday and nearly cost the Vics the match as a result.

Agreed. Hayden has to be 1 or 2 IMO so if Ponting stays at 2, Hayden stays at 1 and Warne goes back to 3. Assuming Lehmann replaces Waugh and the old bowling attack is back, I would like Warne, Hayden, Ponting, (Martyn), Langer, Katich with Lehmann under the helmet

I agree with phatandphreaky.

Hayden is a great catcher and anywhere from gully to 1st slip will suit him, and when Warne returns 1st slip will be his.

Warne. Lack of mobility ensures he'd be a liability anywhere else. Hayden is quite suited to 3rd or somewhere in the gully region.

Warne should be placed at first slip. Hayden is more mobile and can be placed in different positions. Warne can't!

I don't get this Warne can only field at 1st slip cr@p. He always used to be at 3rd before Taylor retired.

Having said that, I've changed my mind - Warne at 1st, Hayden to take Waugh's spot in the gully

Agreed if it's a 4-man slips cordon, but the Aussies don't do that very often. It's usually 5-6 or 1-2.
Langer would be next then Martyn, and I'd move Katich towards gully for these 2 to get in. Would be tempted to have Langer in instead of Katich coz Katich is a useful short mid wicket/cover option, and if Lehmann doesn't take Waugh's spot, Katich probably gets the helmet

thats not saying much. 1st slip is the only place he holds onto them regularly. He dropped quite a few at 3rd when waugh and ponting were inside him. The dropped catch of Fleming's hattrick ball springs to mind, as well as a few others.

I seem to recall him taking a number of catches at 3rd slip as well, but if he is more comfortable at 1st slip, maybe it's because you watch the ball the entire time at 1st, whereas you watch the edge of the bat at 3rd.
I would prefer Warne at 1st slip and Hayden in the gully. Also Warne would still be relied upon for his opinions, especially by Ponting in his first year as Captain, and he would get a far better perspective from 1st slip than anywhere else.

If there is one area the team has falling away abit in it's the catching behind the bat.

Hayden is a sensational gully fielsdman and Ponting is a better point fieldsman than he is slips fieldsman (which is saying something) but when those two were in there it was a luxury, because we had Taylor at first slip (Hayden wasn't playing than, so S. Waugh was in gully), M.Waugh at 2, S. Warne at 3.

None of those guys r playing now, so we are forced to put in Hayden and Ponting into the slips.....

Hayden is great at first slip...but equally as impressive at gully so I would chuck Warne in at first, providing he gets back into the team

I used to love watching Warney in the slips... He would take a catch and then dive to try and make it look like a speccy - he is a showman through and through.

Warney so Gilly can keep an eye on him in case he sneaks away to do a little texting.

If Martin Love was in the side there'd be no contest given that he is a specialist 1st slip.
