Why did they schedule West Coast v Richmond on a Friday night in Round 22? Channel 7 would've wanted Ben Cousins return game against WC at Subi to be their FNF game.

The first question must be:

Why on Earth did the AFL put the 3rd, 4th and 5th team on Sunday?

Next year:
4:40 - West Coast v Melbourne
2:10 - Richmond v Fremantle
1:10 - Sydney v North Melbourne

I know every team can make the 8 but you would not expect most of those sides to finish in the 8. Reduce the likelihood of this happening.

Exactly what I was thinking. How moronic can the AFL get putting Collingwood and the Dogs on the sunday twighlightspot. The only rewards a good season should get is favourable timeslots the next year.

Yep, that's how the Sunday games should look next year.

Collingwood v Dogs will be like a mini final, possibly fighting or fourth, it will probably make the Saints and Cats chances of a flag that much better.

It was a stupid mistake by the AFL to schedule a game than. It would actually be an obvious decision to mve it. At the very least, move it to 2pm. And try and move it to the MCG.

when was the last time that they actually did?

a couple of times in the early 90's...

collingwood v essendon in 1990 was moved to waverley on a sunday...

and collingwood v st kilda moved from moorabbin to the MCG in 1992...

Both of those game were moved to timeslots that improved attendance and did not impinge on the schedules of other clubs. Stadium rationalisation has since removed that ability.

An example that was turned down was when Fremantle tried to shift their home game in Round 22, 1996 to the MCG, in order that Fitzroy might play their final game in Melbourne. The AFL turned down Fremantle's suggestion.

Although it will probably have an adverse effect on my club = i think it is a win for common sense!

A number of options could be implemented going forward

* Leave rd 22 variable to be decided a month out
* play 8 saturday games in rd 22 (my preferred - though will never happen) or 2 friday night games and 4 saturday games and 2 saturday night games`
* for this year - just have 2 friday night games, which means we can keep our Friday night game (selfish i know)

they should fixture the final round's games on friday night and saturdays only from the beginning of the next broadcast deal. that way, the AFL wont have these logistical problems. there's never any foresight from the buffons at the AFL. everything is reactionary.

in terms of revenue and exposure, these 4 weeks of finals are virtually the equal of half the home & away season for many stakeholders. you think it would be smart to be able to ensure they can are free to schedule a finals series which will deliver an optimal return.
