Im not sure NEAFL goals mean much... in the AFL the ball will be comming in with a lot more pressure and he'll often have to contest in packs as GWS will be bombing the ball in long, and judging by his body structure it seems he'd be best as a 1on1 body to body forward to out muscle his defender. with 2 or 3 tall afl defenders jumping on him from a 50 metre hail mary he will probably struggle most games, but to average a goal a game isnt beyond him and would be a successful first year, 2 goals a game could be expected in his 3rd year realistically, and 44 for the year as a 25 year old is pretty good.

Absolutely, but if you cant kick goals in the reserves then you cant kick them playing firsts :)

If he cant kick goals in the reserves then u just wasted many many millions :p

Considering how elite he is physically, and the fact he had a good midfield giving him chances it'd be a disaster if he wasnt getting goals in the neafl, however do consider fev was kicking 8-10 goal hauls in the VFL whilst unfit and rusty...

Its the only data on his goal kicking we have to make any assessment of his goal kicking ability. Its caused the GWS brains trust to permanently move him from defender to the forwards. The real question is, to what extent he can continue to develop and transfer his skills to the AFL.

His body structure has changed significantly since becoming a full time AFL player. I suspect, at least initially his pace and agility will be his primary weapon.

Yes, lets compare a guy learning the game to a Coleman Medalist. Makes total sense.

By any and all measures, Folau acquitted himself very well in NEAFL. His preparations for the AFL have been pretty good and to be honest he's probably ahead of where I thought he'd be - particularly after his few couple of games down back.
 
I hope he does well.

It looks like Rugby League is in trouble out in West Sydney. I hope you guys capitalise on it they are having a protest rally because the NRL and West Tigers arnt doing enough.

Time to divide and conquer!

I think it's somewhat of a fair comparison - even though it is one sided - Fev has dropped off due to what's happened. I still think Izzy would be pretty pumped to be compared to Fev, and so he should be. Fev has the football mentality ingrained. He's been playing forever, izzy is new to the game. So for izzy to be getting 4 goals in one game, 5 in another in the NEAFL, then comparing him to fev (kicking 8-10 in the VFL and being unfit) shows Izzy is actually doing quite well.

In saying that though, NEAFL and AFL can't be compared. the skill level jumps dramatically. Alot of AFL players are put in the VFL because they are just not up to standard, and only get sniff if they bust their asses. Even comparing the NEAFL and the VFL is one sided. VFL level is still far above that of the NEAFL.

Izzy will do well. As someone said (can't recall the name) he is a project. A bloody good one too! But even the lads that come directly from the stingrays to the AFL have troubles their first year, actually the first couple of years. Izzy has the benefit of the nrl background. He knows how to take a hit, he knows what tackling pressure is all about. He just needs to get his head around the fact that the AFL is not the NEAFL - it's ALOT more intense in EVERY way, and he also needs to deal with the ferals in the crowd.

K.Hunt IMO was a bit of a let down. Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing him boot his first goal, thought it was fantastic! The joy in his eyes said it all, but the lead up to him playing his first big game was not as complete as izzys. therefore I think Izzy will be a better player no matter where he plays. CHF would be a good position for Izzy IMO.

To finish off this long ass essay :P, I really hope Izzy kicks some ass. I think he'll be a really good player. Lucky to kick 15 in his first year though because of everything i've stated.

Haha - Thanks, I think. :)

I can spit the ridiculous garb with the best of them - Go to Bay 13 and you'll see me get into the saints, but I prefer the more intelligent talks honestly. After all - there's only so much trash talk you can do before it gets repetitive.

GWS Giants coach Kevin Sheedy believes rugby league convert Israel Folau will prove the bookmakers wrong in his debut AFL season.
Sportsbet.com.au has framed a market on the number of goals the former Storm and Broncos superstar will kick in 2012, with 0-10 the favourite option at $1.80.
The 22-year-old is paying $7 to kick 21-30 majors and a generous $21 to boot 31-40 goals.
But Sheedy, who declared Folau a certain starter for the season-opening blockbuster against the Swans on March 24, expects the code-hopper to surprise pundits and fans alike in his rookie season.
"He's a player that every time you present a challenge he lifts to it to have a go at it," Sheedy said at ANZ Stadium on Friday.
"If he kicks two goals a game and plays every game that's 40-odd, that's a pretty good effort in his first year."
"I think Israel's become a better player through the training obviously, he kicked over 30 goals last year and probably would have kicked 40 if I hadn't have played him down the back half for four or five games."
"He'll play all the NAB Cup games to get him to playing against AFL standard players, and that's a hell of a lot different to playing the NEAFL which is the league we were playing in last year."
Folau says he's more excited than nervous 50 days out from his senior debut.
"It's a pretty exciting time for myself in my career to take on something that I'm not too familiar with," Folau said.
"It's been a big 12 months and I'm just looking forward to letting it all out in a few weeks when we start playing."
"I'm going to go out there and try and perform as best as I can in my first game, it's going to be a long year for myself learning wise but I'm looking forward to taking on the challenge."
Quizzed on his own expectations for 2012, the former Queensland Origin and Kangaroos said replied: "I haven't set any real goals for myself but I guess at this minute I'd like to be there for the first game and try and play as well as I can."
He added when asked the main areas of his game he needs to work on to get up to AFL standard: "Probably the biggest one is reading the game and knowing where to be before it actually happens."
"That's probably the biggest part of my learning so far and that's going to continue for a while I guess."
"The only way I'll get familiar with that is when I'm playing the game so I can't wait to get out there and start playing and learn more about the game."
Swans superstar Adam Goodes said of Folau: "I think the way I see Izzy, he's just like any first-year player ... if he was in my team I'd hate to put any expectations on him other than to go out there and play his role."
"He's going to be playing in the forward line and he'll just be wanting to create a contest up there for his other midfielders and forwards to get underneath him ... and if he takes a couple of marks and gets a couple of goals a game for me that's him playing his role."
Meanwhile, the best player on ground in the inaugural Sydney derby will be presented with the Brett Kirk Medal, named in honour of the former Swans stalwart.
 
31-40 is asking alot and will be an A+ first year. The Suns leading goal kicker was Stanley with 20 (more a mid type player).

I predict Izzy to kick 10-20 and by the second half of the year be more a roaming CHF.

But it is Izzy and nothing would surprise me........

Go Izzy. 3 big pack parks, great to watch. I always find it hard to believe some people knock a player in his 2nd year of Aussie rules. Strange way of thinking but that's society.

1st year really - NEAFL is a fair bit different. But I agree with you - I'm hangin' to see Izzy get comfy and start making his presence felt. He needs better delivery too, but it seems sheeds is gonna play him in the ruck - THIS I think will be a mistake.
 
One of the videos on AFL.com.au has one of the marks, solid goal from him. Looked a hell of a lot more impressive than he did last week against Collingwood/WB. More aware of surroundings now.
 
they were very good marks..as you said arms right forward, he will be very hard to spoil against.
Thats the footage the GWs need to show their midfield when kicking to him.
Kick it to him on the lead not on top of his head. he needs to run and leap into the ball..
i think if you can get around 15-20 goals out of him that would be a great result for you guys.
Playing him in the ruck, big mistake...

Playing a forward who isnt seeing the ball in the ruck is a trick only a century old - I remember Lockett being thrown in there once, during his comeback.

One of the secrets of GWS is Sos - and what he doesnt know about being a fullback was never learned.

True and to make it better SoS was a fair player as well, not a dirty scragger a la Scarlett.

Izzy is doing alright. 3 contested marks and a goal in a game is already more than what K had shown at the same stage (albeit in a different position), and K is doing alright now. Give Izzy a couple more years more experience and a better engine and he could very well end up a damaging KPF.
 
Izzy definately showed some great signs against the hawks..
He's going to take a lot of confidence from that, I reckon, and I know it's early steps, but he definately looks like he can be a damaging forward if given decent supply..
 
Izzy did some good things today v NM...yes he gave away 'that Free kick'...but overall I thought he wasn't to bad....I think by midway through the season we will see a huge improvement.....good on him...bloody hell he must feel the pressure!!!
