Religion Folau

Think that? Of course not. And not all Christians agree with Folau.

Then followed it up by saying ssm was responsible for the bushfires. We all know who his vitriol was aimed at. The others were just a diversion.

So were you outraged before he spoke about bushfires or only after?

I'm also backing a lot of horses in the race. Point being I don't reckon I've ever been discriminated against for being a drunk.

Anyways, that's besides the point. I think the point here is how much does your employer's code of conduct affect what you do outside of work. His right to his religion was never questioned - no-one told him he couldn't believe in God or believe that the Bible was inerrant or he couldn't attend his church or couldn't wear a crucifix or whatever. It was his actions outside of work - what he was doing on social media that was the issue.

And this is why I wish there was a decision so we all understand what right your employer has over your own activities.

Oh and I'm more than happy for him to keep speaking because it just highlights what a moron he is.

I don't have a problem with someone being sacked for voicing a homophobic opinion when they're a high-level representative of their employer who wants to distance themselves from such bigoted statements. If you do and you aren't religious then you clearly are happy with people voicing those sorts of opinions without fear of consequence, and maybe you need to ask yourself some hard questions as to why that might be the case.

The religious can be as religious as they want, but actual decent Australians would rather that people with grossly indecent opinions keep them to themselves.

But why? Rugby Australia and all sorts of other organisations like to tell us all about their Inclusion and Diversity policies, I'm pretty sure at the big Australian company that I work for, religion is part of the inclusion and diversity bit. Can't discriminate based on a person's religious beliefs.

I get on well with my managers and we do enjoy some verbal sparring with each other at our morning pre-start meetings. Perhaps next time anything tenuously close to this topic comes up, I'll ask them their thoughts on the Folau case and how it fits in with our company's I&D policy.

It's probably the quickest growing division in the company, they're the latest trending positions after OH&S/HSEC/HR of the past 3 decades.

There is absolutely no reason why anyone with homophobic beliefs has to broadcast them on social media, and as a very well known representative of his employer, Folau knew quite well that any comments of his would be associated with RU, who were then compelled to take action one way or another. In other words he was free to believe whatever he liked, but that didn't mean he was free to go public with it free from consequence.

He'll need the money, he's persona non grata to both rugby codes and he's clearly so dim he'd be lucky to even get a job in the mining industry.
Do you think he could cut it turning up 15 minutes late to a job sitting behind a counter?

So people can continue to be bigots of course.
We have a government that's trying to outlaw boycotts and protests against climate change but desperate to get legislation through that will entrench religious intolerance. Welcome to Australia in 2019.

I attended the Sydney Mardi Gras when I was in the Navy once, I also watched it a handful of times on tv, these days I find it to be tacky and past it's use by date, it doesn't mean I go out of my way to watch it and then come on here and complain about it. I ignore it, just like I ignore anything that Folau has to say.

He hasn't incited or implored anyone to murder or inflict violence against the people he targeted. He hasn't withheld any services or sacked or failed to employ someone base on their sexual preferences or gender (as far as I know) and he hasn't asked anyone else to do it. He has voiced his beliefs for people to either agree with or disagree with.

Read it, don't read it Believe it, don't believe it. Get on with it or stay still and be outraged.

If it's deemed socially acceptable to preach that gays are bad, bush fires are God's judgement on abortion etc. then what can else can you get away with? Can I hate on the Jews, Romani, Poles? Nothing bad has ever come of that...

Freedom of religion should be about belief. It should grant you the ability to believe (or not) in a god or gods of your choosing. Freedom of religion should not be a carte blanche to practice religious doctrine.

If you do not believe in God or do not believe in the interpretation of the Bible that Israel Folau has then you would have no logical reason to be offended by the post and your reaction should have been an eye roll at most.

The main driver of this whole thing blowing up is the need of QANTAS to be offended on behalf of other people.

The majority of Australians would not agree with the views held by Folau but his support is much higher than many would estimate due to a backlash against this sort of outrage culture.
Is how I perceived it.

And his employer decided to cut him because they didn't want to be publicly associated with his bigoted bullshit. Why people chose to be outraged about that is beyond me.

So people can continue to be bigots of course.

And that hurts you how?

We teach our children about sticks and stones but then as adults are incapable of functioning upon learning that not everyone thinks the way we do.

You do realise its okay to be offended. Life goes on.

I was racially abused as a kid. I made it to adulthood. With minimal treatment and medication.

His employer cut him because the CEO of the major sponsor was offended and demanded he be sacked or the money would dry up.

A man who is perfectly okay making $100m deals with countries which imprison gay people.

If you are going to argue a point, try and be intellectually honest.

I never would have imagined that I would find the argument of a religious bigot the more compelling argument.

Yet here we are.

Some media outlets are calling this a win for Freedom Of Speech.

Israel is at home singing '8 million bottles hanging on the wall...'
I’m more inclined to think that he was paid out his $4m contract plus another mil for compensation and then his legals on top. Probably between five and six million being at the top end of the scale.

Arent you lucky Chief lets you say whatever you want, whenever you want, about whomever you want.

As long as he agrees with it.

Religious kooks should be able to say what they like. But then they should not expect to get public funding for their schools or other institutions, or get tax-free status as charitable institutions.
Not so remarkable. Not the opinion of leading employment lawyer and principal at Maurice Blackburn Josh Bernstein who, despite his leftist worldview tweeted: “ An employment contract can’t eliminate a legislated Protection” and
“Workplace policy can’t subvert legislated rights”.
Absolutely 1000'% correct. Doesn't matter what I put in an employment contract and I have written plenty of them. It doesn't matter what people agree to, legislated protection Trump's all.
