Great effort from Ashy particulalry in his first season.

Obviously Darcy W didnt make the final team from the squad of 40 and w/o seeing the team reckon he's a bit unlucky - no doubt if he played for a Vic club and all ..........
Could have easily had him in over Bailey Smith on the bench.

Lets be honest, Bailey Smith has no business being in that team if it is based purely on performance in 2023. Total reputation selection like a lot of the Dogs in AA teams particulalry Macrae.

I know its hard to compare, but I reckon Wilmot has performed better than Scheezel to.
Completely agree!

To be fair Martin from the bombers should have been on the wing. He wouldn't be far off AA wing selection (if they picked one) so should be a monty for this team. Ashcroft should move to the bench for Smith.

Tough backline to crack for Motty

The gradings of trade and free agency players this year.
Lions related players mentioned.
....................
We’ve gone through all 36 players that moved clubs in free agency or the trade period and assigned a grade based on their first season at their new club.

This has been based on their OUTPUT VERSUS COST (what was given up to get them)

Dan McStay to Collingwood: B-

Dan McStay will truly get judged on his impact in September. He has kicked two goals in every game since returning to the side in Round 18. He has only played 11 this season after a serious finger injury. This grade has room to grow.

Tom Berry to Gold Coast: C-
Was part of a larger pick swap between Gold Coast and Brisbane. The Suns essentially got Berry, pick 46 and pick 30 (in 2023) for 25, 36 and 56. He’s played six games this season. Much of a muchness.

Jack Gunston to Brisbane: D+
Hasn’t quite been the forward-line-shaping swing Brisbane likely hoped. Fitness and now injury have limited Gunston and he has only kicked 22 goals from 17 games, down from 32 in his last year as a Hawk (from 16 games). He will be 32 next season. You'd do the trade again, though.

Josh Dunkley to Brisbane: A+
The Lions gave up pick 21 (Charlie Clarke) last year and what is currently picks 17 and 36 this year for Josh Dunkley, who is a chance to win their best and fairest and has been enormous in their midfield. Huge unders for a superstar midfielder.

I'm giving Gunston a B simply for his off field impact on our ball movement. Will happily upgrade to an A if it wins us a flag.

Hard to argue with those grades

Our grades correct, think the rankine one is way too low at a B just because he cost pick 5. Especially when JHF is rated as an A+ (don't think this grade is incorrect, but was more costly than rankine and only 3 years younger) - rankine easily an A imo.

What is the protocol for players calling time on their careers, at teams heading into the playoffs?

Would have thought Rich would have announced his retirement this week.

Story just up on Codesports based on an interview with him:

Injured Brisbane veteran Daniel Rich has hinted this could be his last season of footy but remains hopeful he can still make an impact on the Lions in September.
The 33-year-old has not featured at AFL level since round 13 and recently suffered a hamstring injury while playing VFL that will keep him out for at least the next two weeks.

The emergence of Conor McKenna and Darcy Wilmot across halfback has limited Rich’s AFL opportunities and the longtime Lion comes off-contract at the end of the season.

He said there had been no decisions made over his future but stressed he did not want to be a “distraction” to the club’s finals campaign.

“There’s a lot of thoughts but an exact decision hasn’t been made yet,” Rich said.

“I suppose it’s pretty black and white that I’m not getting any younger and that’s the lay of the land.

How good's this!

We never get much out of Joe but this is awesome stuff.

Brissie Joe has played 65 games for us so far (played 108 for the Bombers), if he wins a flag or 2 at the Lions he will be remembered as a Lions great for ever.

Be good if he got through to 100 games for us as well to lock in future father/sons.

The Suns Academy production line is not just the blokes

South Australians dominate U18 All-Aus team selection

Queenslander Havana Harris was named player of the championships despite having only turned 17 this year.

The highly athletic ruck/tall forward – who is a Gold Coast Academy player – was a dominant presence for the northern state, averaging 18.3 disposals and 17.0 hit-outs.

Something tells me that given he hates the media\spotlight, any kids he has he may deter from playing top league footy.
It's just the vibe I get from him.
