I wonder what the chances are of Will not even getting the GOTW nom for yesterday’s miracle. All it might take is a good-ordinary effort from a Coll/Ess/Rich player today.
Its a better goal than Wells I think won GOTY from the goal square with the same movement. To beat it, it will have to be something completely incredible

No, it just needs a nomination from a more popular club.

This weird victim mentality about the media must get tiring. There was plenty of celebration about Will’s goal yesterday.

I mean Himmelberg not winning mark of the week a couple back shows it does happen. Fan votes are pretty stupid in this sense

Mason Cox just launched a channel on YouTube explaining football to Americans. Quite Ok to date.

Aren’t Goal of the Week and Mark of the Week, voted on each week by the public on the AFL website?

So what Mr Ripper is alluding to, is that they are in effect popularity votes, and if Ginnivan is one of the three nominations for Goal of the Week, then just by sheer weight of membership numbers, the Collingwood fans would sink Will’s nomination.

Yeah sorry Mr Ripper you were right. No need for me to be snarky like that either.

That Lloyd bloke on Sunday Footy show wasnt that impressed and said it was to early to tell.

What a sourpuss and still cant believe that he actually won goal of the year one time for back heeling it about a metre out
He always takes the chance to talk down anything about the lions. Totally hates us

Interesting that you rarely hear coaches speak about umps but both Fages and Fly were critical in their pressers this week re a perceived failure by the umps to properly award frees to protect the heads of players.

It’s a basic of umpiring - personally I think umpiring in a 4 is a bad idea for a number of reasons - if done correctly a 3 is perfect

I like four because it gives you one forward, one back, and one either side of the contest. But it only works if they pay the frees.

I suspect there's a bit of "I don't want to tread on my mates toes by blowing the whistle if he/she doesn't" and the end result is neither do.

The theory is great but in practice…2’s work well in community footy because it’s easy to get in synch with your partner, from a flow point of view 3’s are ideal because you should get an opportunity to rest a bit but you’ve added another interpretation, 4’s the benefit that they were supposed to provide has not happened and all you’ve added is another interpretation. Personally, umpiring

I can only speak from experience, when I started I was of the view that if you saw it, you blew your whistle and you paid it - regardless of whether you were in control or not. I took up umpiring in my 40’s having played and coached. I had umpired reserves as a club umpire and thought it would be an easy transition but it wasn’t the technical stuff is crucial and positioning is everything. I’d done a few weeks of juniors and felt I was ready for a run in the Seniors in the minor league when I overruled a stalwart in an Under 16 game. At the next break he gave it to me (despite my decision being correct). Later he bagged my performance to the Selectors with the upshot being I spent a further 4 weeks umpiring kids. Eventually the selector ran with me and after the game said “You’re fine, you’re ready to do Seniors“ I said yeah I know I’ve been ready for about a month but…

As I do more games I am less inclined to overrule, largely because so much is based on “interpretation“ - the only times I get involved is if the controlling umpire is blindsided or it’s a blatant miss.

The first thing I say to any ump I run with every week is “if I miss something - blow your whistle and pay it” others say “don’t overrule me!”
