All these guys were average in their first stints in the team, and went on to get second chances.

It's also worth noting that of the team that Ponting led to 16 wins in a row, the batting order for most of those games included Langer, Hayden, Ponting, Clarke, Hussey and Watson. Hussey - who didn't debut in the test team til he was 30 - was the only one of those players to not be dropped after their first stint.

I'm not even advocating for Doolan. If you weren't looking at the list of top run scorers so far this Shield season I doubt you'd even think of him. But suggesting a guy who got 5 minutes in the team against a formidable line up away from home should never get another chance is just crap.

Head technically hasn't been dropped yet and Ferguson has only played one test?

No thanks. Has be tried and failed before
So have many, many others. Some proved to be successes on second, third, even fourth stint. Its a matter of who is in form, regardless of history. I still struggle to pick a side, there are big minuses against everyone that has a small plus.

Doolan is just so average and he’s old. I’d rather even play the two spud Marsh boys than go back to Doolan. That says a lot as I can’t stand either one of them.

While Doolan’s scored a lot of runs this season, its been against useless bowling attacks on flat wickets so I don’t rate him highly. He’s had his chance and he’s well and truly past it at 32 years old.

Similarly with Burns he has had his chance, blew it in South Africa and now doesn’t deserve a go ahead of the other talented young openers at the moment.

So, a 90 odd against the Victorian Attack that bowled the whole team out for 80 is a 'shit attack'?

Mourinho could drive his parked bus between the gap between bat and pad.

Sad indictment he’s possibly in our best XI. Downright pathetic morons on here like him.

But but but..potential....

Dear goodness sakes can we sack the spud please!

That argument falls over because the rest of them haven’t dominated.

I’m indifferent about Doolan, but sustained shield form should be rewarded - we don’t exactly have a lot of options.

Rubbish, that’ll be forgotten in 12 months.

Losing a test series against India, at home, for the first time ever, is something we can never get bck.
Most casual fans probably aren’t even aware that India hasn’t beaten us at home. The incident in South Africa is now infamous, like underarm, losing a series will just fade into the past like most other series.

Alex Doolan is a no brainer for mine with all other openers being in average form at best. he's experienced and is in good form and has made runs against every team, everywhere, so far this season. deserves a 2nd chance at test level. same for Joe Burns, i'd bat him at 4, could be the making of him.
id be keeping a close eye on Hazlewood and Starcs form as well. both haven't been bowling that well imo and need to step it up in the tests from the get go this summer. wouldn't mind seeing Pattinson get back into the mix as well to give a spell or keep the pressure on those 2 guys if they show signs of form dropping off.

How many teams in international cricket would have a worse top 4 batters than that? my god

Not that selectors at the moment think like this, but they should be thinking "who is going to be around in 5 years time to be the heart of a new Australian team?"

At the moment we look like falling into the mid-80s trap where we picked teams to be competitive when in reality, we were nowhere near it. It was when we picked and backed youngsters that we first went on losing but then started to climb out.

There's a theory that throwing in youngsters early can cause them issues later on, I don't think so. Even if they get dropped it's all good, most good bats gets dropped at one point. I want Renshaw in the first test side, no one's putting numbers up so they can really pick whoever they want, I reckon Renshaw is a long term opener.

No but they are players who have come in and been dropped and came back into the side better.

I’d rather give a new batsman a chance- we don’t gain anything going back to Doolan. We might with a young batsman.

Agree, although I do think a lot of that 80s cohort that came through benefitted hugely from having Border as a captain. He was respected, tough on them, led from the front (which is different from just making a lot of runs) and formed that team in his image. That's a major problem now as we have nobody to do that role.

Here is my 11, the batting lineup is all over place and I think they just need to pick a team and stick with it. I like Renshaw and Head despite their form.

Finch is not a test batsman but gets in for now. Mitch Marsh is also lucky but he is a better option than others.

Reckon that's what they'll go with now.

It all depends on Khawaja. I think it's either:

Renshaw
Burns
Marsh
Finch
Head
Marsh

or:

Renshaw
Finch
Khawaja
Marsh
Head
Marsh
