Oh dearI don't think that's true. Mitch is certainly talented, he did well in the Ashes last year, scored 150 last week, he just hasn't put it together in Tests. I think he very well could recover from this inconsistent start. Steve Waugh was a slow starter too (maybe not this slow).

For Mitch Marsh to get to Steve Waugh's stats, he would need to average 57.90 for his next 209 innings.I don't think that's true. So apparently CA are naming the Test squad on Friday, but there's another round on Shield games from 27th Nov - 30th Nov, and the Test doesn't start until 6th Dec. never change CA, bloody muppets.
Careful, I remember declaring that Matthew Hayden was a dud who would never amount to a Test cricketer and I wasn't alone. Plenty of people said the same of Smith.Oh dear![]()
Certainly not expecting him to come close to Waugh's stats. But the talent is clearly there; either he'll put it all together or he'll be another wasted talent, cricket's version of Mark Phillipoussis. For Mitch Marsh to get to Steve Waugh's stats, he would need to average 57.90 for his next 209 innings.
You can't go picking a player of one good hit either. So you want to ignore current form and pick on what happened 9 months ago?
He could of played but Langer thought due to the injury he was short of match practiceHe was unfit for the first test. There's an argument to be made for him not to play first test.
We have to have some eye for the future. I dont think you can have S Marsh, Khawaja, Finch, Wade and Doolan who are all over 30 in the team. I know we have done it in the past but times were different and the guys of that era demanded selection.
For me backing in Head and Renshaw for the series is the way to go.
I think it helps to get a consistent squad together though. Bit hard for players to do well when they know they could be out the door once the next Sheffield shield round rolls around and players are getting shifted up and down the order in 3 different forms of the game. 10 years ago it was ALWAYS Langer Hayden Ponting.. Every single match whether it was a test or odi (Langer was switched out for short form but point still stands), everyone had a spot they could call theirs.Test cricket isn't about building - it's about winning
Pick the best team to win the series. Sure if it's 50:50 - think about the future - otherwise pick the best team and err on having a team that can take 20 wickets over one that can score 500
ODI cricket is different - you build for a WC, so an eye to the future makes sense
I reckon they tried a few different combos before they settled on that Top 3 though. I'd look through the stats to work it out myself but it's 2am and I've gotta get up in a few hours...I think it helps to get a consistent squad together though. Paine
Cummins
Starc
Hazlewood

Can swap Head and Handscomb if needed
He's less of a complete arse than his father, so that's something I guess. Is Wade a good bloke though?
I can't remember a good word being written about Wade senior for a long, long time. If ever. He's less of a complete arse than his father, so that's something I guess.
Agree. Make players actually earn their spot, with a slight bias toward incumbency. Giving a cap on "potential" or "for the future" results in players getting ahead of themselves and not doing the hard graft required.Test cricket isn't about building - it's about winning

I agree with you on picking on potential. that has to stop. that's when we started losing the plot when selecting teams and went on the slide. you should give preference to experienced guys who have performed for a long period of time over a young guy with 1 or 2 decent knocks under his belt. let the young guys develop in the SS for a few more years to work on their game without the added pressure of being talked about as a chance at test selection. unless they are a obvious talent like a Ponting or Clarke that is, but those sorts of guys are rare and they stick out like dogs balls when they do come along so you shouldn't have to go searching for one.Agree. That said, I have no idea who I would choose for the first test. Shaun Marsh gets in despite his UAE failure, he was good last summer and has been among the better Shield performers this season : 80+ in 3 of 4 innings. Possibly "never play in Asia again".
Number six should always be a batsman, regardless of whether they can bowl or not. So Mitch departs.
Except we all know they pick an all-rounder to bowl four or five overs, even if it makes a flimsy lineup that much weaker. Either MMarsh or Maxwell will be picked. They might stick with Labuschagne, but I expect him to be first to face the axe. (Well, second after Siddle, but Sids was always going out if a near full pace attack was available.)
you could say that about anybody. the fact is he cashed in when the chance was there and others haven't.Take out Mitch’s 150 and what does he average this year probably about 10?
