Fourth Test team

Langer has been in the job for 5 minutes, and he doesn't pick the side by himself anyway. He's taken over a shit show and people already think he's the wrong man for the job. We're talking about the bloke who coached WA to two JLT Cup wins & two Shield finals, plus Perth to three BBL titles. A Perth team with a bunch of no name locals while the other franchises bought high priced imports, too.

So you don’t think it’s an advantage to have a state side playing together all the time against franchises? Playing against other teams who have to bring in district players to make up the numbers because their team was torn in 2 to make it easier for the smaller states?

Was he the coach who decided Marcus Stoinis and Marcus Harris weren’t good enough for WA?

Marcus Stoinis has a FC batting average of 33 and bowling average of 42. Let’s not act like he left out Jacques Kallis. And Harris was decidedly average for WA. In either case, he didn’t pack their bags, they left looking for opportunities. Good on them for making the most of them.

Yet has an ODI batting average of 42, better than whoever was keeping him out of the WA team.

Makes you wonder about the quality of a coach that someone who can’t even play FC cricket under him is now the test opener a couple of years later after moving elsewhere.

But it could be worse, at least he wasn’t the WA coach that pushed Chris Rogers out!

Nine months ago, a player that did perform under him was Test opener. Then something happened. Let’s not kid ourselves, Harris is very fortunate to be playing Test cricket, all things being equal, he’d be a solid Shield player.

Every state has players leave for opportunities, some go on and do well, others not so much. It seems to be really scratching for a reason to knock an otherwise quite successful state coach. Hence why I question the partisan nature of the criticism. Hell, some people are saying Ponting should have got the job, a guy who hasn’t even coached properly.

Continuity is great, but would you rather rely on plucking guys like Andrew Tye out of grade cricket and giving them a go or just signing Dwayne Bravo or Brendon McCullum who have been tearing up the IPL?

Stoinis has done next to nothing in FC cricket until this year and he is back with WA anyway. Harris left for opportunity and good on him for doing well, but again he hasn't done a whole heap at FC level until this year. There are now 6 internationally capped bowlers in the WA squad, 5 all rounders and 2 batsmen. There are always going to be players moving for opportunity elsewhere. David Hussey, Chris Rogers, Simon Katich, Stuart MacGill all left WA once upon a time, and Adam Gilchrist, Mitchell Johnson, Michael Klinger and others have come the other way.

Stoinis played one ODI in 2015 then his second was in 2017 when he nearly won the game with his massive solo innings. Prior to that he hadn't done that much. Is Langer supposed to be responsible for how a player that leaves WA in 2013 performs in 2017? In Langer's time as WA coach we won the JLT Cup twice and Stoinis didn't feature in either nor did Victoria win while he was there. Last I checked it was still a team game.

Lehmann’s reputation seemingly getting an overhaul. His selections were equally inconsistent and his favouritism of ‘attack at all costs’ players certainly led to plenty of players being ignored.

If Langer is indeed favouring ‘good blokes’, do you think it might be somewhat under instruction given the team just embarrassed itself on the world stage by being grade A assclowns?

Surely and I mean surely here these "good blokes" have to be performing though. I mean he names a vice captain that was an utter failure! When does the coach get some criticism at least?

Picking Labuschagne was bad enough, but if the plan is to place him at #3, then the current crop of Australian selectors have well and truly out-Hilditched Hilditch.

If the plan is as rumoured, it's almost like they want him to fail - coming in with little Shield form to speak of, batting first drop against the best Indian pace attack I've ever seen.

For every 1 of these bizarre gambits that actually come off, probably around 10 more will fail miserably.

I hope he goes out and smashes a ton today or tomorrow BTW, but I think that quite the opposite will occur.

I'm not worried about Langers record, although I don't think it's as good as what people suggest.

What shits me is the mixed messages he has been sending and the fact that there seems to be one rule for some and another of others. Not entirely he's fault I know as the selectors play a part in it also.

He's also spent a fair bit of time whinging about people having their say on selection amongst other things. I don't know what he was expecting when he took the job but there will always be people in the media wanting to put their opinion forward.

He certainly didn't mind voicing his opinion on selection via the media before he was coach:
“In any team, whether it’s one-day cricket, Twenty20 cricket or Test cricket, what is absolutely critical for success is the opening partnership and the top three,” WA coach Langer said on the Stumped Podcast . “Matt Renshaw, I think he is under some pressure honestly...he hasn’t started the season particularly well.”

And he says two men in particular are keeping the Queenslander on his toes.

“Cameron Bancroft played very well, although I also think he could be becoming a long term wicketkeeper batsman for Australia.

“I think Shaun Marsh is in the best form I’ve ever seen him in. It was only two Tests ago or three Tests ago he was the Superman of Australian cricket.”

I was staggered when Langer was saying to Bruce McAvaney "I think a lot of people have state bias and want to see people from their state get selected" yesterday.

Posters should be whinging about the faarkwits that are CA with the suspensions handed out to Warner and Smith, and the win toss bat first result pitches for the first three tests , the SCG is just a draw waiting to happen.

Is langer using this culture good bloke thing as an excuse to just pick his favorites?
No one knows there is a 'good bloke' selection policy. It's just one of a number of unknowns being used to pot him after just a handful of Tests. Fact is, most of the blame should be heaped on CA, the selectors, Warner/Smith et al. Langer will have to wear the consequences, given he is now part of the selection panel, but for Christ's sake, a little time would be nice.

Can’t the coach not be transparent though? I thought the criteria was Shield runs- that’s what Langer said. Then he picks Marsh and Laubashgne. What’s the criteria? The coach should be transparent. I don’t want any of this “he’s good around the team” trash

i think the selection based on runs (or even position) thing has been pretty solidly debunked. Its clearly a personality thing, and it has been for decades (why else would they give you a baggy green with your baggy blue?). The country as a whole has a major issue if only 4-5 of the best 25 batsmen in the country are 'good' blokes.

just another worst australian with a victim complex. you'd think the end of the footy season would see them all go and hide for a while. can't wait till they secede.
Victim complex?
Everyone (especially vics and South aussies) has to perform instantly but crabs from wa and nsw like khawaja, starc, voges, okeefe, and the marshes get to play until they accidentally succeed
lol.

Only up to a point; if he's been told he can't pick Maxwell or Wade because CA thinks they are twats, he's hardly going to come out and say it in public. There is bound to be plenty of behind-the-scenes limitations on what he can say.

Then don’t come out and say you are purely picking off players scoring runs. There’s been no transparency at all.
