Fremantle cannot win the Flag with their current list

I would be concerned if I was a West Coast fan about their performance in Round 1, a better team than Brisbane would have won and won easily.

Tyson Stenglein, Jaymie Graham, Matt Rosa and Steven Armstrong weren't on the West Coast list in Rd 13, 2004. Pretty sure all played a decent part in the 2006 season. There's 4 new players, one of whom is a key midfielder and another who kicked a crucial goal in the GF. Not sure on the relevance of WC to the thread, though.

I'm not willing to categorically state that Fremantle can't win a flag with their current list, but on current form & selection policy (based on a whole one game), they won't.

I live in Perth, I watch all of their games live (myself and my mate are both members, he's a Dockers supporter) - sorry I dont know when and how many times you have made the finals.

However, I know your list and I know its shortcomings from an objective stand point. Do you even go to the games dear wal? Or another arm chair champion??

I wasn't overly impressed with our Round 1 performance.

The majority of the side that played Brisbane has led us to 3 consecutive top 4 finishes, 2 GF's and one flag. If we don't improve and we start losing games, then changes will need to be made (and will be), but you can excuse the odd poor performance and our selections given our last 3 years.

Fremantle has made the finals once in the past 3 years, winning 1 of 3 finals. They have shown glimpes of good form but have ultimately delivered nothing. Whenever they have been poor, the finger has been pointed at the coach, poor recruiting & blooding of new players and the midfield. If the same players which have delivered nothing over the last 3 years are selected in 2008 and the team fails to deliver, the same criticisms will come thick and fast.

In recruiting all these seasoned players, they now have the unenviable position of having no kids coming through. 2005 was a blessing and a curse - they made the finals, but then figured they had a premiership window when in actuality, they probably didn't. No results this season should = big broom and a big clean-up, start from scratch. Chances of that happening are slim though......

Its too late now - they have too many oldies (who are not performing) and very few youngsters of note coming through. They didn't need to rebuild - they needed to make some tougher decisions and move some older players on, not be sucked into thinking they needed to "top up" their list and blood some young kids. But the crunch will come, be it this year or next. You have a big age trough in the middle thats not nearly full enough.

Losing in round one doesnt put you in a hole, but the reluctance to blood new players, thus restricted the clubs future development for the sake of a few old-timers egos being soothed does.

Our KPP stocks were going that well at that point that Trent Carroll was still getting a game. From then to September 2006, our 4 key positions were held by Hunter, Hansen, Glass and Lynch who had improved immensely in that time.

Either or, isn't this thread meant to be about Fremantle's list in 2008? Whatever West Coast were doing in 2004 isn't all that relevant. Fremantle either have a list capable of winning a flag or they don't.

I'd like to see someone mount a case for why the current Fremantle list can win a flag, rather than engage in pointless defelctive arguments with the thread starter.

They won't win a flag.. I'm not sayign thay can't, as Scotland said, but they won't.

Why get Mark Johnson?

Why not play a youngster in round 1?
Palmer Ibbotsen Foster Mayne Warnock ect.. at least one?

Although I did tip them this week as I think the Hawks are overrated.

I think i read somewhere that Freos youngest player on the weekend was 21 or 22, am I correct?

This weekend will give a few pointers as to Freo's season.

Hawthorn don't mind playing the big grounds. IMO Hawthorn's midfield will run them off their feet on a nice firm Subiaco.

Hopefully Palmer and maybe Ibbotson get a run.

It was that they Cannot

People (including your coach) said WC couldn't win the flag with their list, yet they did.

The only reason the comparison is even being made is because of Fremantle's performance.

How many young kids are there in the current Melbourne side? Hawthorn? Richmond? West Coast?

I can think of 10 guys on our senior list 21 or under who have played, and 8 who haven't. How many of these are regulars? How many games have they played? How many are duds? How many players under 22 do we have? Under 23? Over 30? There's no point saying 'ooh look at us, we are the youngest' if you aren't any good.

No one seemed to care that McGrath, Hayden, Hogg and Gilchrist were the most important players in our WC cricket success because we won.

This has been an interesting read. I don't know whether Freo can win a flag with their current list or not. However I do know that they played the oldest 22 in the league last week and were chopped up by Collingwood.

One would say that if they don't give it a real good shake this year, then it ain't going to happen.

Having said all this, based upon their form during the pre-season and round 1, you would have to be an extremely optimistic supporter to think it's going to happen this year.
