WHILE the majority of Fremantle's squad returned to the running track, Stephen Hill continued a detailed weight-gain program that will see him emerge bigger and stronger in 2010.

Hill and other second-year players cut short their annual leave this pre-season to focus on adding significant size to their developing frames.

Who is in charge of conditioning?

is there any risk he will lose his pace if he gets significantly bigger, i know he needs to put a bit on but i dont want to see him lose any of his pace.

On the track, Hayden Ballantyne and Steven Dodd were impressive in a series of short-course runs, while rookie Michael Barlow kept pace with draftee Dylan Roberton

wow, ballas hasnt ever been known for his endurance, even before we drafted him. great to hear :thumbsu:

How does short-course equate to endurance?

"A series of short course runs" sounds exactly like what ballantyne does in a game - chase defender to tackle, rest, lead, rest, lead again, crumb, rest, run to space etc etc. So if he is doing well on the track, and with the benefit of a full preseason, it would be reasonable to assume we'll see a bit more endurance out of him in the sense that he'll be able to make more of those efforts before he runs off knackered

makes sense to me:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

i haven't heard the term "training the house down" for a while..

Should be good to have a bit more strength in mr hill.

I was gunna add salubrious smile ,kidney punching. in your face, wind you up goal kicker into your post but could't get it right. :)

I think the "oh, bulking up will slow him down" theory is a hutchy special. Ever watched a 100m race, did the skinny guy win? Muscle bulk can actually spped you up, it's just a matter of how much weight you want to carry around all day.

FFC has an awesome fitness coach, all these times are measured and monitored - it won't be an issue.

Sometimes players do bulk up as they have specifuc role, I am pretty sure we won't turn Stephen Hill into a in and under specialist only.

Yeah, you don't see too many world class sprinters with weak upper bodies. I guess it's the agility loss with adding bulk/muscle? I'm no expert though..

Its all about power to weight ratios. Hilly's increase in power will more than compensate for his weight gain.

I remember learning something about this in school. Could be completely wrong but I remember it as something along the lines of bulking up doesn't actually slow you down, it slows down your acceleration a little but that was all it did and obviously there is a limit before it actually does slow you down.

he will never be massive as he has a wiry frame but he will end up very strong for his size. they will make sure he is still conditioned for speed and power. if done right he will put on some size and still be ridiculously quick. being a ball of muscle hasnt stopped this guys speed and explosiveness > http://www.nbauniverse.com/nbaplayers/lebron_james.jpg
hill is a super athlete, should be a gem, can see the peter matera likeness in some of his play

How long do sprinters run for!!!!about 10 to 12 seconds?
It has nothing to do with his sprinting ability just that if they build him up too much his speed may and I say may suffer. It happened to Paul Medhurst when they bulked him up.He couldn't run.
Me thinks that Usain Bolt would not qualify as a bulked up lump. Now didn'r he win the sprints at the last games!!!!
What the Hutchy theory? This phrase was arounf before Hitchey was a tadpole in his old mans sac.
