Report from AFL.com

NORTH Melbourne kicked eight straight goals to record a 36-point win over Fremantle in the NAB Challenge match at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night, in a game significant for a thumb injury to Jess Sinclair and the successful return for Peter Bell.

Despite never leading before the final quarter, the Kangaroos kicked six goals to nil in the last term to record the 12.10 (82) to 6.10 (46) win.

North Melbourne will be delighted with the performance, and in particular with the form of Hamish McIntosh in the ruck, David Hale and Aaron Edwards up forward, Drew Petrie and Daniel Pratt in defence, and youngsters Scott McMahon and Scott Thompson.

However, the injury to Sinclair could sour the trip home. He sat out the game with his hand wrapped and iced after leaving the field midway through the second quarter.

The Kangaroos win was impressive considering they were without captain Adam Simpson, Brent Harvey, Nathan Thompson and Daniel Wells.

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey entered the game viewing it as a chance to give several players their first pre-season match and to rest others before playing close to his best side next week in preparation for round one.

The most notable returnee was Bell, who played his first game for 2008 since moving to Geraldton for work reasons.

He performed well and showed every sign that he will have another strong year.

Coming off a hamstring injury, Rob Warnock also played his first game of the year in the ruck allowing Aaron Sandilands to rest. Veteran Heath Black also returned from a hip injury.

It was a handy list of outs for Freo, including captain Matthew Pavlich, Jeff Farmer, Des Headland, Dean Solomon, Luke McPharlin and Michael Johnson.

Coming off a lost to Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last week, Fremantle started the better and had seven scoring shots to one in the opening quarter.

Freo had 105 disposals to 75 for the quarter, 34 marks to 12 and 12 inside-50s to six, but it didn’t translate to the scoreboard.

Midfielder Byron Schammer kicked the side’s two goals, while Hale goaled in what was the Kangaroos only score of the term.

The Kangaroos kicked the opening goal of the second quarter through former Peel Thunder player Matt Riggio on his return to WA.

That brought the Roos to within four, but a superb goal to Tarrant from near the boundary and another major to Mayne saw the home side lead by 15 points at the main break.

That lead was extended to 21 points at the start of the third when Adam Campbell goaled, but Hale's second and Corey Jones' first saw North back within eight points.

Tarrant nailed his second soon after, but goals to Lindsay Thomas and McIntosh made the margin just one point, the closest it had been since the one-minute mark of the game.

Close enough wasn’t going to be good enough for North, though, as goals to Edwards, Leigh Brown and Brady Rawlings inside of the first three minutes of the final term put them up by 18 points.

Drew Petrie and Edwards then kicked the Kangaroos further ahead, before Daniel Harris received a 100-metre penalty to kick another and extend the lead to 39. Black was subsequently reported for using abusive language towards the umpire.

Today's headlines

A six goal to none final term has seen North Melbourne come from behind to record a 36 point victory over a youth filled Fremantle in their NAB Challenge match at Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

The Kangaroos reduced a 15 point deficit to zero late in the third term to set up an intense final term and the momentum they built strengthened in the final stanza. Three goals in as many minutes to start the term gave the Kangaroos the lead for the first time in the match and put Fremantle on the back foot. From there the visitors over ran the locals with a further three unanswered goals, raising Fremantle’s frustration levels and North’s confidence.

The match saw rookies Chris Smith and Luke Pratt make their first appearances for the club, lining up along side some of their younger team mates after 10 of their senior colleagues were rested for the match. Dean Solomon, Rhys Palmer, Des Headland, Antoni Grover, David Mundy, Luke McPharlin, Club Captain Matthew Pavlich, Aaron Sandilands, Michael Johnson and Roger Hayden were all rested, allowing Senior Coach Mark Harvey to test some of his most young and inexperienced charges.

Draftee Clayton Hinkley (18 possessions, six marks) had a strong game on the wing, displaying the pace that made him such a stand out at the NAB Draft Camp, while Garrick Ibbotson (22 possessions, 4 marks) was consistent through the quarters across half back and centre.

As has been the case throughout the pre-season, Mark Harvey again experimented with players filling roles usually foreign to them. Brett Peake opened the match in a forward pocket, Daniel Gilmore was largely spared rucking duties and lined up on Leigh Brown at centre half back and Chris Mayne started on the wing. Kepler Bradley also had bursts in the ruck when Robert Warnock was rested off the ground and at full forward.

Fremantle now look ahead to their next NAB Challenge fixture next Saturday against Port Adelaide in Noarlunga, South Australia.

Fremantle had 40 possessions and 22 marks more than the Kangaroos in the first quarter and went inside 50 six times more than their opponent to help them out to an 11 point lead at the first break.

Byron Schammer opened the account 90 seconds in after kicking truly from 50m out directly in front after chasing down Jess Sinclair and earning the free kick.

Further forward surges put the Kangaroos backline under pressure, while at the other end of the ground North’s counter attacks were thwarted on the last line when forward Corey Jones gave away consecutive free kicks for holding on from behind.

They finally hit the scoreboard at the 17 minute mark when ruckman David Hale goaled from outside 50.

Schammer kicked his, and Fremantle’s, second major for the term at the 20 minute mark to take the lead to double figures.

The second term was slow to get going with the first goal coming from Riggio eight minutes in.

Paul Duffield sent a scare through the Fremantle camp at the 10 minute mark when he hobbled off the ground with assistance from trainers after laying a shepherd on Hamish McIntosh. He later headed to the rooms without his left boot and sock, suggesting an ankle injury.

The Kangaroos’ half back line held resolute throughout the quarter, cutting off Fremantle’s surges forward which, at times, were lacking polish. As the quarter wore on and delivery into the forward 50 improved Chris Tarrant and Chris Mayne kicked truly from opposite pockets to get proceedings back on track for Fremantle’s forwards.

North kicked four goals to two in the third quarter and held sway thereafter. Corey Jones, Hamish McIntosh and Lindsay Thomas registered majors in the term to open their accounts, while at the other end Adam Campbell kicked his first for the night and Tarrant his second.

Was depressing to watch.

Mayne was again a standout.

Try Benny, I've heard he has a good supply of anti depressants.

Clearly North were taking the game a lot more seriously than Fremantle (this seemed to work for the weagles in round 1 of the NAB Cup, and considering our absentees tonight, we were fielding a similar strength squad).

Lots of positives to take out of it. Schammer was very good - his tenacity and desperation is second to none, he will be a very strong addition to the team. Mayne was great again and Ibbotson was very busy. Bell was also good, played probably half the game and certainly didn't seem to be showing any ill effects from being in Gero. Dodd was good in the backline, but horribly out-sized. The Kangaroos were just bigger and stronger and wore us down as the game went on.

Very briefly for now:

The Good:
Byron Schammer, Garrick Ibbotson, Clayton Hinkley, Chris Mayne, Chris Tarrant, Daniel Gilmore, the first quarter, some decent signs from Ryan Murphy, Belly slotting back in quite nicely, Luke Webster's hit on Andrew Swallow (about the only thing he did).

The Bad:
Matthew Carr, Kepler Bradley (both guys kicked more to the opposition than to team-mates); getting absolutely caned in the middle in the second half; watching North sweep it downfield right through the guts while we faffed around going sideways, backwards, around the wings; Blacky's rustiness (although he will be better for the run), Brett Peake - quick as lightning but he is a dumb footballer.

The Ugly:
The last quarter; Blacky's lack of discipline resulting in 2 x 50m penalties and his name in the book; 10 goals to 2 in the second half; a passage of play where we had about 10 possessions inside North's 50 before McIntosh intercepted yet another stupid dinky pass and kicked a goal; Freo wilting under North's defensive pressure, but totally chasing tail when they had the ball (second half).

Enjoyed the first half - Schammer was BOG - but I don't know what was said at half time cos the two teams that came out were very different from the two teams that went in. They were great. We were shit.

Meh, disagree with this. I thought both teams went in far from full strength or full tenacity. North Melbourne came over without Daniel Wells, Adam Simpson, Brent Harvey, Nathan Thompson and Shannon Watt for a start, not to mention Daniel Harris and Andrew Swallow spending a great deal of the game rotating from the bench. The ball use in the first half was poor, and Fremantle simply failed to convert their midfield dominance on the scoreboard (I thought Gibson, Pratt and Thompson did well down back also).

The second half, the tide changed and North Melbourne simply took their opportunities, especially Aaron Edwards. Not a great deal to take out of the game except losing another HBF/midfielder through Jess Sinclair for 6 weeks with a broken thumb. ****.

My first Fremantle game of 2008 that I've attended.

Just a scratch match though. :)

Believe me!!

The Eagles deserve you.:thumbsu::cool:

Even though you are an unlisted flog, we all know that you are a dirty bird girl.

Please, please, please don't even think about changing......we don't need you....and we don't wan't you!!

Go back to the WCE board.....they are missing their idiot!!

I wasn't really serious, it's just that we cop that for the month or so leading up to a pre-season derby, and it seems to work a treat as an excuse for the weavils.

I think there was plenty to take out of it for the coaching staff. I still have serious doubts about Gilmore making it as anything other than a back-up ruckman. His decision making and disposal were very poor. Campbell and Murphy were also pretty disappointing - it was a perfect opportunity to step up and claim the third tall spot without Pav around and neither did much at all. Black's outburst wasn't good either - he seemed to be pretty frustrated with himself and looked spent, but he needs to learn to deal with it in a better way or it's going to cost him a spot. Drum struggled, but I'd like to see them persist with him - there wasn't much support out there tonight and the second half was pretty tough.

I think the dockers were exposed in the final quarter when the roos went tall up forward, the dockers had no one but Kepler who could physically match it with them and the score reflected that. They kept bombing it long and the young fellas down back didn't have a chance.

It was a good night to blood some of the other young players. Ibbottson put his claim on a jersey for round one. Mayne got a chance in the midfield to start the match. Bell showed what great shape he is in, he really looks as fit as I have ever seen him, which is a bit scary.

On the down side I think Mark Johnson struggled in certain areas. He dropped several marks (they were contested), but more noticable were the attempted bumps he was putting on, however he ended up missing his man and landing flat on his butt. This must have happened about 4 times. I'm just not convinced playing him up forward is going to be as rewarding as what Harvey might have wanted. Soloman makes him look ordinary in the same role.

Blacks moment of madness late in the game was just stupid. They desperately need him out on the paddock!

Gilmore looks like he has booked himself a place in the 22 for round one after playing majority of the game in the midfield.

The most frustrating part of the game to watch was the midfield just did not seem to be working to create leads for the backmen to deliver the ball out of the defensive 50 to. The roos went man on man and were cutting off forward plays at will. I think Ibbo, Bell and Gilmore were the only really doing it.

I thought Bellie was calling for the oxygen bottle at quarter time. I agree Scham put in a good one but for mine Ibbo showed he is a footballer. I rated him as our best. As for Keppler, the Joondies will make good use of him.

I think Harvey needs to choose his 22 come round 1 very carefully. I'd pay particular attention to quality disposal. It seems we create more goals for our opposition than they do.

rgauci you are definitely correct here. The positive is that the 10 players rested from tonight's match are generally very good with their disposal.

I agree 100%. As soon as we had the ball in their 50, they went man on man and we just did not work hard enough to give the backmen anything to kick to. Result being that we pissed around with it sideways, backwards, sideways some more until we made an error and they were able to pounce on it.

I will be pretty unimpressed if Mark Johnson plays Rd 1 - he was ordinary at best. And while Kepler tried hard, he too was very ordinary. Altough he did take a great mark that landed him on his head. I was peeved when we took them, then I thought "trust in those who supposedly know what they are doing"... but now I am once again starting to come around to the train of thought that they were two draft picks wasted that we could have used on a couple of young guys. :(

Ibbo was great, Mayne showed enormous tenacity, and Hinkley did some good things, Schammer was freaking everywhere, Gilmore was about the only one prepared to get the ball and try and break the lines and kick long (actually the others mentioned here did too... and I have to say - Ibbo is a class act).

Matt Carr is a lazy bastard... if he wasn't kicking directly to the opposition, he was putting his team-mates under enormous pressure more often than not resulting in a turnover, after he's lobbed it over their head, kicked to a 3 on 1 or landed it just in front so they have to try and gather a half volley. He really peed me off tonight.

Dodd worked his butt off but was seriously out-sized. Drum was soundly beaten in the second half by Aaron Edwards who had a quiet first half but was on fire in the second. Head was okay - not bad, but not outstanding either, although he did stick to his task quite well, as did Drum.

Of the other youngsters - Pratt was a bit overawed early on, but settles into it as the agme went on, but he didn't get much game time. Mourish didn't do much - looks like dom misses out on his $1 and beer... ;) Smith worked hard in the limited time he got, but some of his leading and running went unrewarded.

Kiwi needs to curb his temper. Gave away a 50 just for being a stubborn git, and not backing down from glaring at an umpire. Obviously must have had a word or two to him as well. Duffield didn't get much game time - in fact I don't recall seeing him at all in the second half.

Warnock was monstered by McIntosh... he didn't get much sympathy from the umpires either, despite a few pretty blatant push outs - and not just from superior body strength. He will have learnt a bit from that tonight.

Kepler is not a ruckman. Kepler is not a backman. Kepler is not much of a footballer at all TBH. :o

And the amount of times Brett Peake got the ball and took off sideways, diagonally backwards, round in circles and then handballed to a guy with two North players on his hammer was astounding. IMO he will be pushing it to be in there for Rd 1.

Tackling was pretty good. Much better than last year, although MaJ gave away a few frees for high tackles, which was frustrating.

Did I mention that Ibbo is class? And that Mayne will be a bloody good player? And Hinkley looks the goods too?

I think we scored with our first three picks from last year...:thumbsu: (and then bombed out badly with #4 and #5. )

:D You should try it sometime, it really is a great excuse. Then you can just go quietly about your business preparing for Round 1. Ask Paul Roos.;)

shows that the reporters from afl.com.au only read the stats sheet coz they had him listed as our best player tonight :thumbsd:

Agreed IP.

Matt Carr's disposal was shockingly bad. Several times you could have swore he was trying to give it to the opposition. Lazy is right. Same for his brother actually. Maybe Josh just can't be arsed until the proper stuff starts on March 22?

Mark Johnson trys hard. Maybe too hard? Several times he gave away frees for high tackles. He is ferocious on the contested ball, but just hasn't got it together yet. Doesn't warrant a game in round 1.

Kepler. He is no ruckman. Gilmore is also no ruckman, but he is a far better choice than Kepler. Gilmore jumps. All that being said, when I see the stats in tomorrow's paper I'll be surprised if Kepler didn't get more kicks than Kiwi and Murph combined...

The positives. Tequila Schammer, Chopper Mayne, [insert nckname here] Ibbotson and the returns of Bell, Black & Warnock (regardless of form.)

Still got high hopes :)

(Tryna be positive...) :thumbsu:

As my mate said to me at the ground: If we won by 5 goals we would dismiss it as a meaningless pre-season scratch match. But we lose, and get all paranoid that the year is about to head down the drain!

We lead this game for three quarters. Add the 12 or so we left out, and things are looking pretty rosy.:thumbsu:

Couldn't make it to Subi tonight due to prior social commitment so thanks to those who have provided write-ups. Sounds as though it started well and got pretty ugly by the end.
I find it interesting that M Carr has played in everything so far this year including South Africa. I wonder if he might not be close to borderline for getting a game and Harvey is giving him last chances to prove himself. I confess I think his time at the top level has past. His presence is always justified by his supporters by his tagging role but surely it's possible to tag someone and still be able to kick to your own team or make good decisions under pressure. He represents everything that makes me angry about our team. Leave him out.
I too will be extremely disappointed if Mark Johnson is selected for round one, particularly if it's ahead of Mayne or Ibbo. I really really hope Harvey isn't blinded by loyalty to old Essendon comrades.
It's time to leave some of the old guard on the pine and let a few new faces through.
Let Bradley go play in the WAFL.
