Glad to get the win, but not convinced we played well. WC running out of legs in the last quarter because they had no rotations made us look better than we were.

You can make the argument that the Eagles needed to spend a lot of tickets to get back in the game after letting us get such a lead in the second quarter, and that's what finished them off, they couldn't come back from it with no rotations.

I agree with you, but we've been on the other side of that ledger, an injury-ravaged loss. Can only play what's in front of you, I thought we handled the contest much better, had a good rotation and mix of guys in the mids to keep it a guessing game, and we moved the ball much better, especially through the corridor which has become a strength of ours. I think they'd have run out of puff in the last anyway without so much injury carnage, we are a faster and fitter team when all is said and done - it's just that we didn't play well in the previous 2 rounds, this was significantly better without being close to perfect. Our game still has elements of slowness to it, but it's okay if you pick and chose when to go and when to kill the clock.

Better games from Jackson and O'Meara etc helped, we're still a work in progress there, finding the right balance. This game was a step in the right direction with an opponent that got hurt by its own lack of luck along the way. We just needed to win, but I also thought we tactically did a lot right, the lowering of the eyes going in 50 from the likes of Serong really helped, less of the pure long-bombing. Our 3rd quarter was poor and could have haunted us, but our 2nd and 4th were good enough......lots to iron out still, but a lot there to work with too

Adam Simpson's face when Sonny got that first free really tickled me. Like his captain doesn't do the exact same thing every week.

Short memory as about 2 seconds earlier Duggan stone cold dropped the ball in the goal square. Clear holding the ball. Play on of course. Just like all game where WC players did this, while our players were getting legitimate handballs away (Serong one on our half back flank springs to mind) and still getting pinged.

I've only flicked through the first quarter replay, but what is with Pavlich and sucking up to the Eagles? Whenever I stopped to watch a bit, he was siding with them on free kick calls and praising them. I get that he doesn't want to look biased to Freo, but he goes too far the other way. I was watching the Hawks/North game and there was an ex-Hawthorn player on the mic (forget who) who was actively referring to Hawthorn as "we" and "us".

Henry played one of the all time worst games. Stopped momentum everytime he touched it:
And I’ll just add and state the obvious in the process.

I know we have a rich history with indigenous players and we all love that flair they bring to our team. I there’s some hoping he magically finds that magic Abraham, Farmer, Walters all had/have.

Henry just isn’t that.

Also

he’s in his 4th year now. How much more time does he get to fix those errors? Young, serong, Freddy all in the same year and look miles ahead of him in almost all aspects of the game.

I wanted Henry to work out more than anyone but it’s come to a point where it just doesn’t look like clicking for him, at least not with us (I fully believe he’d reach his potential in a second if he moved to another team for no reason other than it feels dockery ).

Would love to be proven wrong but I feel like he’s had enough time to show something.
Well he's only had one real preseason and he's in the midst of learning a new role.

You're going to get errors with all players. Also, people moan about the team being too safe and slow, well if you want dare, it's risk and reward. Some may like the idea of having their omelette served locked in pristine eggshells, but the practical reality is different.

A lot of signs point to people's primary reference on Henry is their feelings. Things like being impervious to observable evidence, even if it's presented to them on a platter. Or overly generalised classic whinge blame language, like "always", "never", "everytime" etc, peppering their descriptions. Or the sliding criticisms "too lazy", "slow decision making", "shirks the issue", "too vain", "lack skills", "too slow", "no tank", "no flair" despite (or because of) evidence to the contrary.

Watching the wings (and even half forwards), is something where most of the work can go under the radar unless you're attuned to it.

His running patterns are solid and his operating in traffic has been good. The biggest problem he still needs to work on is the amount he gets it (although often a consequence of being an attacking wing). He sometimes could be more assertive in getting the ball, maybe. And of course, his goal kicking.

Id take my left foot over Henry. He wasn’t kicking from 50m. It’s amateurish. He’s not a penetrating kick but if the whole stadium knows you’re not going to kick it from 30m out slight angle then it’s time to put in the work.

I’m not saying ram it home, but stop chipping the kick like you’re trying to pass it to the goal umpire. That particular play was frustrating because we had about 5 guys out and we chose Henry.

I like what Henry brings, but this is a make or break season and yesterday was borderline career defining in all seriousness. He can’t keep making howler errors. His first 2 weeks was good, so he deserves a run at it, but another performance like yesterday in next 2 weeks and he’s dropped for sure. He may even get dropped this week.
I’d definitely drop him for Sturt this week. Surely Sturt could offer something of value.

Some of the things I liked:
Johnson calmness for his first game was fantastic.
Dizzy was rusty but he plays the wing very well. He runs from our D50 to our forward 50 and places inbetween. We look better balanced with him in the side.
Amiss ability to hold his ground in marking contests was a real pleasant surprise. Must stay in the side.

We played so much better than the week’s previous, though we have a lot of improvement to go.

We take the win and move on.
Insightful as always Saul. One improvement I would like to see is when we are running with the ball through the centre, please on e forward stop running towards goal and turn and offer the lead, rather than everyone looking for the kick over the top Gives the kicker an easier option and open ups space.

I was absolutely thrilled with Jacksons game, that's closer to the standard we need for this year, that's a guy that can turn games BUT if there's one massive learning point for the dude it's that if you are coming up against someone who literally cant compete against you, just take it out of the ruck dude and belt it forward. Even if he just does it once or twice, they have to rethink everything they are doing

well that was fun.

WC tried their little hearts out and a few of their senior citizens broke down (that's what sometimes happens with blokes in their mid 30s sadly). Ginbey looks good but that was basically all. At Wesley he was a complete standout.

Jackson finally taking marks and hitting goals. Switta speed. What a memory for the tackling MJ on debut. Amiss looking like a future key forward star.

and freddie... ahhh memories from this one will last a lifetime.

This 💯 times Snuff. We all were screaming “just smash the thing”. Frustrating.

Game summary and Suma’s ratings
I disagree with some of his ratings (he's generous to Pearce and Cox, harsh on Jackson and Amiss and Switta was a 10 as far as I'm concerned) but I do like his commentary on each player most weeks. I think if you look passed the numbers, most of the time it's decent

By the end he should have just been grabbing it, drawing a tackle and kicking or handpassing to space or another mid. Would have liked a bit more smarts from him to figure that out by himself but I assume it's the first thing he gets told on the review

I was hoping that if he couldn't figure it out, one of our mids would be all over it at the latest in the second Qtr. He should have added another 5-8 clearances, which would also mean quick ball into an even forward line.

Less about the players lost and more about the team being gassed, with 4 18 year olds and only one rotation tbh

Mmm, both I reckon.

Not to be overly negative but we need a bit of a reality check.

Shuey dominating went down halfway through the 2nd. McGovern playing well. Then effectively no rotation and playing 2 players who couldn't run in Ryan and Chesser for 40 minutes of football.

Nothing worse than rocking up to a game where the opposition has a full bench and you've had to rope someone's younger brother in to make 18.
