Freo's trading and drafting

The trading situation is only a result of pisspoor drafting that seems to want to stock up on midfielders
/thread

Trading seems to be quite overrated on here, probably because the media hypes it up no end

Others have said it, getting KPF's is hard. If it was easy we would have done it. Seriously there are maybe 20 blokes in the country that have the size and skill to be a successfull KPF, then add in consistency and that number drops again.
Our other issue ( WO stating the obvious) is the opposition.... Hawthorn. Twice its been them that's stopped us in the finals. Collingwood had the same issue against Brisbane, Geelong had 6 years of it in the 90's ( with argueably the GOAT), the doggies made prelims with no GF.
Hogan went in the mini-draft and GWS wanted picks, there's no way we could have got him. Some of the players we missed, Cloke, White and Clarke, I'm happy we didn't get.
We got Fyfe at 19(?) but no one is saying well done for that.
The draft has for years been compromised by the new teams. GWS took Patton and Mcarthy in the same draft, they've consistently gone for youth. If they had taken just one KPF from another club such as Cloke or Roughhead, Cam may well have gone through to our pick and history would be different. We've had a bit of bad luck, strange circumstances and good opposition. We're not the first nor will we be the last. It's sport. There's only one winner. Serious question Silent Alarm how many flags have you won? I'm 38 and have won one cricket flag. They're hard to win in any grade.

Lol as if he's ever played any form of sport in his life.

You cannot accept the fact that you've had 1 sole key forward for 10+ years.
Theres no excuse for that.

There seems to be only a handful of Freo fans that call bullshit on it and understand its simply not good enough whilst the rest are seemingly happy to splash around in their pool of mediocrity and take some more misguided optimism into a season where the same old problem will come to the surface in a bigger way than ever before.

You seem to post a lot about Freo. Are you really a Hawthorn fan?

Haha I know, right. Lived behind enemy lines in the heartland for a fair while so naturally keep a closer eye on Freo than most other teams.
Awesome place to live in fairness.
But I've heard it all before and have many conversations with mates that go for Freo.

The forward line problem just doesn't get solved.

Surprising thread, I thought Ross Lyon was the coaching messiah and had learnt from his mistakes from his time at St Kilda, well that's what Freo supporters have been telling me the past few years.

Seems like the same old problems are surfacing with Ross focusing on the short term rather than the long term and playing his favourite experienced players at the expense of youth.

Then when those favourite experienced players like McPharlin and Pavlich retire it's like "oh shit now what do we do?".

It's been pretty obvious that Freo have needed a quality KPF replacement for Pavlich for a while now, they shouldn't have been relying on a last ditch attempt to secure a young contracted KPF from GWS who still hasn't really proven himself consistently at AFL level.

You just worry about the umpires champ.

Has Carlilse fronted the leadership group yet.

Apparently Revolt is vey upset, Jake has given the club a bad image, its Ok to take photo's holding each others **** though.

It is bullshit. But removing established KPFs who we made an offer to and they refused. How many drafted KPFs did we miss out on that would, right now, be making a difference for us? Good KPFs don't 'slide' to pick #58 like a Lachie Neale or Sam Mitchell. They're gone by pick 10. Even then they probably won't make it. GWS drafting 5 KPFs is unheard of. Mason Shaw has been delisted. Lee (StK) doing nothing along with Kersten (Geel). There simply hasn't been the talent to draft. We tried Gumbleton ( fail) and Apeness did his knee last year. One thing I think we should have done is trade out Mundy when his last contract was up, that would've ( maybe) got McCarthy.

Jarrad Grant straight in .

Black has been hopeless since his injury (ask North fans) and as if Carlton were going to give up Casboult. They have less key forwards than us.

I mean, Freo board.
But what's black got to play for at the Roos? He's been left to rot in the vfl, a sea change could help him rediscover

And Carlton gave up Menzel when they're short in the last day, we could of pryed casboult as SOS would sell anything for picks

What is the issue with Freo? Will anything ever aide them in being able to pull Victorians? Is the club too arrogant and happy with its membership numbers and Fyfe Brownlows to look at itself and where it stands? Basically – has their ever been a shitter set of recruiters at a 'successful' club?
Hard to know but I suspect it is some part the coach, some part the game plan, some part the distance from home for a lot of players, some part the targets chased. As it stands though, Clarke agreed to go and McCarthy still wants to go. You make a fair point about limiting options and I think trying to pull of the big deal for the star forward is low odds. Cloke was never going to leave let alone go to WA.

Maybe the better option is to trade up the draft order and draft a forward.

Freo and Bond are notoriously difficult to trade with, they tried to fleece Brisbane for Mitch Clark and got burnt.
