Id grab him on the cheap but not have high expectations. At 24, he would be looking for a no.1 option if he was moving clubs. Not sure we can guarantee that until Naitanui goes.

Sure, statistically he's not in the top echelon.
However, his progress as a 20 year old ruckman is exceptional, particularly when you consider he is sharing ruck duties with Gawn (who gets the lions share).
I wouldn't be selecting him as a forward option, more on the merits of him being a no. 1 ruckman first and foremost from 2024 and onwards but one with the ability to rest forward at times and create a legitimate target.

Given Naitanui only has a couple of years left in him, at best, I think our ruck situation (as Williams is struggling) is dire.
I can imagine that Melbourne will start by insisting on two-first round picks with the minimum they would accept being our likely top-3 pick this year.

While I would prefer selecting the best inside midfielder in the draft (should he be available at our pick) at this point I would be comfortable with selecting Luke Jackson as an alternative (presuming he continues to progress this season).

As for elite midfielders, I'm not sure who we can dislodge who is currently available.

Another year another excuse not to pick a mid.

Jackson can tap it to himself as there's no else.

agree I would be loathe to give up a early pick on Jackson if we were targeting a Ruckman , I would probably ignore Broadbent as well and aim a little lower for someone like SA Ruck Harry Barnett (rated pick 15-30) or get a fwd ruck in Tom Scully ..

Broadbent is as close to a sure thing as ive seen in a ruck. So you're paying up for security rather than star power though he could reach elite hitout numbers etc at some stage.
Personally I don't rate Scully highly. Will be a massive tease for a recruiter because hes kicking goals and he's tall but goes missing for half a game of footy then piles on 4 goals in 10 minutes type of guy He's nowhere near being a ruck, is basically a one trick pony leading out of the goal square and uses his height and long arms to take marks on the lead. . At senior level and AFL level there's guys who can jump or are just as big.
Doesn't have the agility or mongrel to scrap for the footy either on the deck so that rules out rucking being an option besides maybe pinch hitting from FF. Oh and he cant kick, its like he's kicking a basketball around.

Does some amazing things for a big guy but isn't great at hitouts which is what you have a ruckman for. You must've been watching a different game earlier this year than me.
Meek basically went 90% of the second half without touching the ball or having a single hit out.

He had a pretty good half then....hahaha. He still got twice as many hitouts as Dixon and he was against one of the best tap ruckman to have played the game in recent history.
My point is our Ruck stocks are very bare. Meek is 24 and by that number probably moving into when Ruckman blossom. He moves well. Is a clearance Ruckman and plays a good time on ground. He currently can't get game time behind Darcy , who is also young.

It will be an SPS situation all over again I'm afraid - we'll lose him for minimal return given he's out of contract (albeit SPS had shown much more at senior level).

The thing is scully is 204cm and and roughly 85kg's. He will need 4 years of conditioning for AFL to play full forward. He is not a rucks arseh*le. The only reason he gets thrown in there is because of his height. At 204cm as long as he can get strong one on one he is still a very highly rated talent. The biggest thing for key forward results is I50 entries and how they are targetted.

The Academy game was a total shitshow from that perspective as the players hadn't played together and there really was no cohesion. Cadman and Jefferson were much more targetted going forward. Lemmey went on a lot of searching runs but didn't get used or when targeted the ball wasn't in his favour. Scully also really never had anything really targetted where he was in the best position. The only time I remember was in the goal square and because it was bombed high and he was surrounded by players he didn't have the opportunity to jump at all and was spoiled from behind.

Also for those who haven't been there Frankston is a ****ing shithouse place to play. The wind is swirly (it's a windy place in general as well as the entire area apart from the newer developmont in north frankston being an absolute shithole) and not indicative of clean disposal. I was at the game and I wasn't disappointed by Scully given how he was targetted and being played part time in the ruck. Lemmey was a disappointment but you can see the huge talent there. He is more likely to be the ultimate tease imo. Scully is also normally a very good kick.

Cadman despite getting the most shots on goal is rushed, makes poor decisions and isn't a great shot on goal. Jefferson had a pretty good game.

Down back Teal and Hustwaite were atrocious despite getting to a lot of contests. Teal in particular was a goal to the opposition waiting to happen. Busslinger was very good.

Clark was good but his disposal was average at best but he did improve as the game went on and definitely improved his standing with me in the draft.

Wardlaw was the only player who actually truly impressed me. He learnt in 1 half of football that at his current size and weight the way he was playing wouldn't work against bigged bodies and changed it up in the second half for great results. His burst of speed and great marking for his height really improved his ranking for me.

Tsatas was the biggest disappointment. Heard footsteps multiple times and didn't go at contests when he should have and was again poor with ball in hand.

Broadbent was the best big man on the ground for the Academy but it's not surprising considering his size and weight. Needs to trim 10+ Kg's of puppy fat and turn that into lean muscle and he will be at the very least a B grade ruck who can ruck full games. His lack of leap and not being overly tall may see him slide but I really want him as one of our pickups. Bar 1 kick was also very, very good around the ground. Can genuinely be that manbeast of a ruck, is very good around the ground and has good disposal.

Hewett was disappointing but he wasn't played in position but still managed to show a bit around the ground and up forward.

(I was at the game by the way) Overall I was disappointed with the Academy team but it was blatantly obvious they were playing together for the first time.

Now in regards to unearthing our next Yeo his name is Hough and he needs 4 preseasons to get the weight and strength. I've seen more in Hough than Erasmus TBH considering where they are coming from development and size wise.

In regards to trade targets i've already mentioned i'd go after Meek. Sure he will just be a B grade ruck but outside of Nic he's streaks ahead of anyone else we have at the moment. Jamieson is as or more talented but still needs at least another 3 preseasons before being actually AFL ruck ready.

My problem now becomes in finishing 17th if North take Wardlaw as he's the only mid outside of Ashcroft worth a top 2 pick at this stage or even close to it so if we do want to split the pick I don't see anyone coming with a major offer on pick 2. Until the Champs happen I'll hold out on judgements but so people know there were a lot of players not in the Academy side who are potentially better than some of those out there.

If NN is around for a couple more years then Jameson can do the "Jackson to Gawn" role.The lad already looks clever at contests whether its rucking,marking contests or ground balls.Williams can be third in the pecking order.
Meek is at best competent.Lets not get caught up in taking those scums leftovers.Thats a place that can drag out our recovery for years.
Ruckmen need to be mobile and competent at the coalface.Gawn,NN,Lycett,Nankervis; all good at the contest;but not all were great tap ruckmen.
Gawn was soft as butter for years and Melbourne were the same.Then Gawn suddenly realised how physically imposing he is which coincided with Jackson coming along.Big talented young and unafraid.
Williams has talent but doesnt give us any grunt.WC need to take him aside and kick his arse coz he is falling behind the pecking order.

Players dont just get traded.

They have to request to be traded. Or another team has to make specific inquiries into a player, and then the club puts that forward to the player to sus out their thoughts.

Sometimes a serious discussion takes place if a senior member might start playing 2nds as they blood young talent.

Anyone who thinks we trade Darling has rocks in their head. No other team will want Gaff, he is shit now. I dont know who else is being offered up? Shuey?
