Gaff the inside mid Vs Gaff the outside mid

Came about as I posted a stats comparison for the locals on the Freo board who still think he only plays an outside role. A stats comparison of 2017 as an outside mid Vs 2019 as an inside mid

Per game:
Contested Possessions +3.5
Effective Disposals -1.5
Clangers +2.5
Clearances +3
Centre Clearances +0.8
Stoppage Clearances +2.2
Turnovers +3.7
Disposal Efficiency -11.6%

Great his contested numbers are up, but at what cost given how much his effeciency is down and his turnovers are now way up?

Move him back to an outside role where he belongs Simmo

He can’t play inside because he is absolutely rubbish under pressure. He can’t create any space in tight and is a horrible decision maker under the slightest bit of heat. His gift is his endurance and reliability as an outside link player and should be sitting off each contest as a receiver.

Gaff is an outside mid who provides a good contest when he has too. But Simmo is using a Ferrari to plow a field at the moment. Switcharoo with Masten asap please.

Sheed -> Inside
Gaff -> Outside
Masten -> GTFO

Ok a bit harsh on Masten, but for team balance it's the right move for mine

Its not even trying to be harsh on Masten. Doing what you suggest would improve immeasurably in two key midfield slots. That was bullshit sliding Sheed sideways after his heroics and start to the season. Especially when Gaff is such a great linkman.

Gaff back to a wing but also a rotation inside here and there.
Redden to play 50/50 inside and outside (note thats where he played in the finals and was huge)
Sheed back to playing predominantly inside.

Get Yeo to play in the coal face and feed the rest of our mids.

Masten out unfortunately and we should look to run cripps/Petch/duggan through a wing more often as well.

Gaff is barely hitting the ball with his foot half the time when he’s kicking under pressure.

He has the worst kick rating in the AFL this year. This is a measure of the difference between the likelihood of hitting a target and the actual rate.

He also contributes to the least scores per possession of any midfielder in the AFL this year.

He’s simply not adding value as a more inside midfielder this year, and his time on the ball is taking away from players like Sheed in the centre who were having purple patches before that.

If Redden comes back this week it will be interesting to see where Gaff plays.

I guess Simmo wants a mid who can contribute on the HHF since Rioli has been injured which probably threw his plans out the window a bit. Sheed kicking 3 from 25 on the HHF v the Pies probably helped his views on it but it hasn't worked well since.

Masten role is a complex one in that his defensive role on a wing is handy but it is a role that Gaff & Redden should be able to do just as well if not better. Redden and Gaff as wingman offer way more because they can actually spend minutes in the guts if needed and can cover the ground just as well as Masten. I hope Simmo will give this a shot like he did with the one ruck idea.

The error we made was playing Gaff on ball from the get go. He was actually making an impact as an on baller a year ago. He should have started on a wing with less pressure and eased into an on ball rotation.

What we have now is that he is struggling and Sheed losing all that form he had during the JLT and early rounds of the season.

It really hurts us now with Redden and Yeo down on form as well.

Drop Masten and make Mallen that HFF/mid that Sheed does.

Lets just stink it up for the rest of the season

I was hoping Rioli would take over on one of the wings for this season before his injury. He had a 14.6km running game last year and looked even fitter this year. Now I think it's time to let Petch develop on the wing. Trade Gaff back to a Melbourne club this year so we can clear some cap.

Nobody would pay him the same unless he improves this season but then if he improves WC won't trade him

Gaff is not the cause or the symptom, it's bigger than Gaff, his current state of play/disposal etc is the fallout, the debris from the opposition's tactics. Gaff is collateral damage.

If shuey,redden,yeo cant get enough of it we are in trouble.fair enough everyone has to get their own ball but if an inside mid is needed mallen,brayshaw and even Nelson would be better options
Gaff linking the play from defense to chf is too important to us

To be honest it is a bit of a worry the coaches have blinkers on about this. Everyone else can see that Gaff should be on the outside receiving the release handball from Shuey, Yeo, sheed and redden as much as possible. Using a player in their best position is common sense stuff unless you don't have that luxury. We do!!!!

Dylan82 made a pretty convincing point about why this is happening. I really doubt Gaff on the inside is what the coaches have been planning for.

The reality of the situation is more complex – opposition extras sent back are primarily directing their attention upon Shuey, Yeo and Sheed, effectively double teaming them in many circumstances. Without the same level of attention, Gaff often finds himself to be the only Eagle with a clear approach to the ruck tap and naturally goes after the ball (or would you prefer him to just stand there on the outside and watch an opponent claim possession?)

Pretty much. Gaff is an outside mid in a team that is being destroyed in the contest at the moment.

Exactly right.

Add to that Sheed's stats playing on ball versus HFF and again we get a drop off in production.

Turn those stats around to Sheed finals form and Gaff in top orm playing wing then IMO we would be half way to fixing most of our midfield issues.

Playing blokes out of position contributes to the problem.

Playing blokes in their natural positions where they kick arse helps fix the problem.

No one player is the problem sure. But fixing Gaff and Sheed will help stopping the turnovers and poor disposal efficiency both inside and outside.

Its like domino's.
