Gameplan against the Eagles

Why do people think the eagles flood? They dont, Wooshas game plan is pure man on man.

I reckon our gameplan should be to get numbers behind the ball. Shock....Horror!

Tagging Judd or Kerr will obviously take place but the problem with the WCE is that they rotate so many through their midfields. Kerr, Judd, Embley, Braun, Waters, Rosa, Selwood, Stenglein....even Staker.

If we try and have 5 players do the same work as 8 or 9 eagles, the Bartell, Ling or whoever will be gone and we'll be criticising engines and fitness and pace etc on monday.

Everyone will need to run through, including Chappy and G.Abblett.

Actually, this year we have employed a "flood" for want of a better term at various stages in pretty much every game.

You may have noticed last week at various stages the Doggies had the netire back half of the field to themselves. At that point we were effectively flooding the midfield and allowing them to get to half back/wing and then blocking their run with a "flood".

We have alternated between variations on a flood and man on man at different stages of games and I have no doubt, that we will do so at times this week.

Additional numbers allows us to get our running game going from half back and then use hard running into space (a strength) to quickly attack.

I have no idea what will happen this week as I do not believe that anyone knows which Geelong team will turn up.

You're not alone there.

i could be proven wrong and hope i am but ling will be eaten alive by either kerr or judd. especially the way the umpires have been favouring judd with frees of late.
Youve picked the right week to come up against us I reckon. There has been so much media attention to Kerr and Judd getting free kicks, and pressure on Geoff Geishen has increased to the point where he will cave in. Id expect in the aftermath of this "protected species" media story that has been run all week, that the umpires will be under instruction to favour Geelong just to silence everyone about the percieved favourtism West Coast is getting.

If Geelong dont win the free kick count from soft decisions, ill eat my hat.
Guarantee Judd and Kerr will get quite a few free kicks paid against them this week, or quite a few non-decisions go against them :(

I agree with the original post... I think we need to take risks, run hard and get it in long and quick. With 3 talls down there i think that will stretch there defence and the quicker we get it down in our forward line the better as we want them to be contesting one on one. If they dont mark it, at least bring it to ground for Ablett, Stevie Johnson etc. to mop up.

I think D. Johnson is a good match up for Kerr and maybe try something different with maybe Monica or Tenace to go with Judd or even both of them swapping of the bench.

GO Cat boys! This will give us a good indication of how we will fare this season.

Way out in left field. If we do that, they'll just stick Lynch in the goalsquare and bomb it into him. So much bigger he can hardly help but take the mark.

Yeah I would hate to see Mackie on Lynch, He is comming of a great game last week as well. Obviosly Scarlett is the man but maybe give Sam Hunt a shot on Hansen if Egan is out. Just gives us another attacking avenue.

I would also like to to se Tenace get a tagging role on Judd though starting outside the square.

Kerr is the danger man and I think Ling can hold him because he is not overly quick.

If Cox is out it will give us a much better chance for the win as I think we will win most of the taps.

here's one from left field:

Rotate Ling/Wojcinski to tag Judd

Rotate Tenace/Selwood tagging Kerr

Mackie on Lynch

All good except the Mackie / Lynch match up. Whats the weight/size difference there?? 20Kgs and a couple of inches??

Sorry, are you saying that KERR is "not overly quick"?

Ummm.... fair enough, I guess thats an opinion.

I think the way to shut down Judd and Kerr is to make your tackles stick. Too often the reason they get clearances is that they break through tackles (they're brilliant at it). That's why Rooke had a great end to the year in 2006 because he shut out some great mids by making his tackles stick.
So, if Ling is on Kerr or Judd, it's not about necessaruly just trying to 'keep up with them', but making sure that at bounces, they are close enough that when Judd or Kerr lays hands on the ball, they're tackled and held onto, not let go of like they so often are.

Mackie did a good job on Lance Franklin a few weeks ago and gave away height and weight to him.;)

Gotta tag Bartel with Stinger. He can go with him in the air and around the ground should be a good matchup. Whoever gets Scarlett should play CHF leaving Egan in the square with either Hansen or Lynch. Wirra up forward. No matchup for him down back. Hunter on Hawkins and get him to run forward and snatch a goal or two. Hawkins wouldnt have the fitness to go with Huntaah. Glass on N.Ablett. Staker on Mooney and B.Jones on Ottens if he decides to rest forward. Think we can get alot of run from our defence from our taller blokes this week. Id like the smaller defenders such as Chick and Selwood to concentrate on shutting down Gablett and Johnson. Game will be won and lost in the ruck/centre. Were gonna have to win the ball alot there and get quick delivery too our forwards. Eagles by 10 points

For us no changes I think. Embley wont play and im not sure if Fletcher will come in for LeCras yet.

People like to bring that up, but I don't see that as a justified reason enough to continue to play him on bigger-sized, legit key-position players. His value for the team down back lies in his running (when he can be bothered), rebounding game off half back where he can set up plays with his kicking skills (when they're 'hitting' more than 'missing').

He doesn't need the extra burden of contending with physically superior opponents. His size might seem appealing to the mismatch-type forwards (what is he, around 192cm with above average pace?), he seriously needs to just stick to playing as the third or fourth tall (that is, your mid-sized guys).

Egan will take Lynch.

Egan has been taking the opposition's number 1 tall forward which has released Scarlett to a more attacking role.
Correct,he is the logical choice. Mackie is playing the best footy of his career as a running back, setting up play and kicking goals, lets not mess with it.

CM35 is not under rating him, but without the delivery through the midfield Lynch will be useless. pressure on the midfield will reduce the impact of lynch.

Which of course applies both ways.

All key forwards are to some degree dependent on quantity and quality of supply.

The interesting thing for me is the view that West Coast play this ground badly. Under Woosha, we have lost there in 2002 (his first year), drawn in 2003, lost in 2005 and won in 2006. So thats 2 losses (1 was 5 years ago), 1 draw and 1 win - not too bad a record.

Geelongs game plan has to be about pressure around the ball carrier, if you allow the Eagles to have time and space the Eagles will win comfortably. Interestingly, some on this site have pointed to the relatively close games that the Eagles have been in this year but with the exception of Sydney and briefly Richmond (of all teams), none of the Eagles results have been in any doubt from early to mid third quarter. We slowly strangle teams - I expect the same this week.

I see the wink, but still, Lynch is a lead-up/contested marking forward with massive upper body strength, who relies on using his size to beat his opponents, requiring a strong, reasonably quick but not especially manoeuvrable backman (Egan). Franklin is very clever on the ground and needed a more agile defender (Mackie).
