GAJ was sent to the country to sort himself out. Played one season for Myrtleford then went to Geelong. Not sure of the contractual side after that. He played OK at Myrtleford without being outstanding, although he did represent Ovens & Murray league - on the wing if I recall correctly.

His departure from Hawthorn to Geelong has been rumoured to have something to do with inappropiate behavior in the dressing rooms.

The Abletts were a pretty rough bunch.

The club got sick of Gary's court appearances and the many legal bills.
And his walkabout ways.

Also, older brother Kevin took time out of his footy career to spend some time in a cold, hard place.
About 18 months in total!

Quite a family ...

.

Talking about sliding doors. Not only did we miss out on the most talented player the game has ever seen but then we missed out on the father-son link with Gary jnr. Who knows if there is a 3rd chapter to the story also.

Think you're mixing up your Gazzas.

Gaz was a dirt bag. Was a Prospect with the HAs, even they booted him due to heroin use. Good player no doubt but do you tolerate having a scumbag in your camp? The only thing that mitigates that with Gazza was he was so anti social so was never going to try and lead the group astray.

You mean between 2007 and 2010?

No, I mean 2007 to now.

It's an unknown what he would have done at Hawthorn. Maybe the club bond would be stronger. Maybe he might have loved growing up and living in Melbourne. Could have been married with kids and didn't want to leave. Anything is possible, so I stand by what I said.

However, using my own argument, he may have peaked sooner than 2007.

Ignoring what Ablett could have done for your club in the 80s and 90s, imagine what the father son rule could have done for you between 2007 and now.

These hypotheses just don't work for me. If Ablett had kept playing for Hawthorn maybe Ablett Jnr would never have been born.

thanks for helping me out with the Gary Ablett thing, maybe you could explain to me what went wrong after'being very spoiled' in the 80's,why did the team slump so alrmingly?
We always thought Hawthorn was a cheque book recruiter. We thought when you actually had to plan, strategize and develop your cattle as a result of draft/salary cap, it took you awhile to learn.

I have what must be a rather rare footy card of Ablett at Hawthorn in the early 80's. It's part of a set you could get from Ardmona fruits. I can find and scan it if anyone is interested.

Old Gazza was a naughty boy in the early years and used to pinch cars to come to training lol......and of course Jeansy being a copper was sick of his bad behaviour and moved him on.

Jeans was asked if it was a mistake and his response was Hawks 4 flags in the 80's Geelong with Ablett zero[/quote]

One of Allan Jeans best quotes and he had many great quotes

Not sure about the cheque book recruiting but I think the AFL/VFL changing the drafting laws to stop our dominance worked.
