Gary Ablett in 2016 will become a massive talking point. He is someone that would be able to play into his mid 30's
Below is a little piece taken out of an article, have a read

Frank Costa and Cameron Mooney say Gary Ablett could finish his career back at Geelong if Gold Coast does not make finals by the end of 2015.

Ablett, 28, has flourished in his first two AFL seasons as Suns captain, but could be tempted to return home to Geelong when his contract expires in three years.

Asked if there was a realistic chance the Cats could lure Ablett back, former Geelong president Costa said: "I think there is. Every time he speaks to his mates back home, I think they say, `When are you coming home, Gaz?'

"So he knows he's popular back here and he is very close with his mum and his brother and sister and his father. The Geelong Football Club and the Ablett name - it's a magic potion, I tell you."

Premiership teammate Mooney said he felt Ablett had the capacity to play for another eight seasons.

I was starting to believe that article till I got to that last line .....
Not as unbelievable as it sounds. If genetics are anything to go by, remember that his old man kicked 120+ goals at the age of 34 and was still playing footy at 36.

He could eaaaaasily play his last couple or so seasons as a half forward or even as a 'small forward'. God knows he has the goal sense and innate talent. Would love to see him finish his career at Geelong and not that artificial creation of a club.

Wooljay

Please name a club that has not been artificially created.

Pretty hard to see him not playing until mid 30s....very durable player and his body type and ability to play a forward role would suggest that he will provide plenty of value for sometime to come.

How many games has he played now? Must be getting towards 250.

If Ablett maintains his fitness now he certainly could be playing for the next 8 years but don't forget it only takes one injury to take away 2-3 years of a valuable career. I suspect it'll come down to his teammates. If they're still relying on him by 2016 his body will be exhausted and he will struggle after then, but if the likes of Swallow and Bennell really take their game to the next level allowing him to be rested more then he could play til mid 30s comfortably.

His old man was playing full forward back when running a kilometer a game was a big effort from them.

I get what your saying but on the other side of that is ablett senior didn't have the elite preparation/recovery/sport science like GAJ does.

I could see him playing for a while yet, but 36 might be a stretch.

I could also see him playing a leigh matthews ish role (possibly as early as 2014) where he spends more time forward than in the midfield.

If he splits his time 50/50 between midfield and forward, He could well kick 40 or 50 goals.
Was kicking regular bags of 3 or 4 as a midfielder.

If he did go back and finish his career with the cats, would he still have the same respect and affection from the fans?

I can imagine losing a favourite son the way he did might have felt like a betrayal for some - would they openly have him back? When he hangs up his boots, will his time at the suns perhaps tarnish his chances of becoming an absolute club great at Geelong (or even GC)?

Depends on which fan.
I'm watching all his GC games, will always be a fan, he is simply the best, would be stoked to see him finish his career at Geelong.

Hmm do I want one of the best players in the game to stay at my club...? :P

I think he'll stay, I expect GC to be in a good position for contention when he comes out of contract.
