Like he did against Richmond right?
Net net he's made more than he's missed.

Varcoe missed the 2013 PF one..

Made 3 in the 11 GF.

If you look hard enough they all miss some at a point...

No one in the history of the game makes them all.

Seems like a ridiculous point of argument to me

GO Catters

Ha ha. Let's start with Gaz only tackling players who have the pill. Do you seriously want him to tackle players who don't have it?
he tackles players that have his precious pill but that is only on the ball!
he doesn't lock down or tag opponents he freewheels for his tackles which isn't such a part of team discipline. He's not a tackle accumullator but he could be if he wanted to be but maybe he protecting his shoulder?!? Last season I think in a period of 5 consecutive games he only accumulated 4tackles? and that was when the Cats were in a form slump!
And his average of 6.5 defence half acts suggest you are talking out of your mango.
Quoting random stats like that doesn't substantiate anything more than him linking up with defense for a cheap way to get his numbers up!
You won't see an Ablett on the highlights reel where he runs the full length of the field just for team accountability and a possible tackle!

But complaining that Ablett doesn't run up and down the ground is like complaining that Tom Hawkins doesn't push down to help the defenders. It's not the kind of player he is. He hasn't got the tank to do it - Mark Blicavs does. Tim Kelly does. It's not who Gazza is, it never has been

On the other hand, there's hardly anyone else on the team that can sneak a goal to keep us in the match or lift the entire team (and the crowd) with a sensational running goal

I'll break down the stats and ratio of tackles throughout the season just to expose Ablett's lack of defensive accountability:
R1 39disposals 1tackle Cats were lucky beat Dees by 3pts only coz Gawn missed a set shot from point blank range at the final siren!
R2 35disposals 6tackles Hawthorn win by 1pt <Came close to doubling possessions of almost every Hawthorn player Tom Mitchell the exception(40).
R3 26disposals 1tackle WCE win by 15pts. Plenty of Cats racked up tackles but Ablett not one of them.
R4 Inj StK,
Won 47pts. R5 Inj PA, Won 34pts. R6 Inj Syd, Lost 17pts. R7 Inj GWS, Won 61pts.
R8 32disposals 2tackles Cats won by 21pts over Pies. Leading possession getter for the Cats but not best on ground, not even best for the Cats.
R9 17disposals 1tackle Bombers beat Cats by 34pts. Poor game by Ablett that Dons dominated from start to finish!
R10 25disposals 4tackles Cats beat Blues by 28pts. Ablett redeems himself from previous week's disgrace but not named amongst Cats best.
R11 37disposals 0tackles Cats beat GCS by 85pts. Ablett gets let off the leash to roam free against a shite team.
R12 34disposals 8tackles Cats beat Roos by 37pts. YES Great game by Ablett BOG! no complaints from me when he's getting high tackles tally!
R13 25disposals 3tackles Tigers beat cats by 18pts. Ablett named amongst Cats best.
R14 BYE
R15 31disposals 2tackles Dogs beat Cats by 2pts. Luke Dahlhaus leading possession getter for the Dogs win<<<remember that name!
R16 17disposals 2tackles Cats beat Swans by 12pts. Ablett has a quiet one in a must win game to stay in contention for finals!
R17 32disposals 5tackles Crows beat Cats by 15pts. A lot of possessions but just not dangerous enough.
R18 31disposals 6tackles Cats beats Dees by 2pts. Ablett starting to string together some defensive accountability.
R19 38disposals 5tackles Cats beat the Lions by 42pts. Ablett and Beams go head to head for BOG honors in the midfield but Tomohawk gets it!
R20 24disposals 4tackles Tigers by 3pts. Weak performance by Ablett's standard when we needed something special!
R21 32disposals 8tackles Hawks beat Cats by 11pts. HUGE performance by Ablett but not enough to get the win!
R22 25disposals 4tackles Cats smash Freo by 133pts. Average performance by Ablett's standards but MASSIVE win for cats and named in best.
R23 25disposals 4tackles Cats smash GCS by 102pts. Average performance by Ablett's standards but another big win for cats and named in best.
Finals Week1 27disposals 6tackles Cats get brushed aside by Dees. In the game that counted the most, Ablett played a great game!

Season summary Ablett 2018
Can't argue with Ablett's season performance! I was a critic through the early rounds of the season coz Cats failed to find that formula in the midfield and I pinned a lot of that blame on Ablett but also that most of the mids just were running forward of the ball and leaving themselves exposed if there was a misdirected pass or turnover. Ablett really stepped up defensively in the 2nd half of the season, which I concede was a great performance from the old codger! I expected to expose him but I stand corrected!
2018 season averages:
    • Kicks 15.6
    • Handballs 13.5
    • Disposals 29.1
    • Marks 4.5
    • Hit-Outs 0.0
    • Tackles 3.8
    • Goals 0.8
    • AFL Fantasy 104.3

I never complained but pretty poor argument coz Tomahawk is a Power Forward and our main focal point for goal and Ablett played mainly as a midfielder in 2018.
On the other hand, there's hardly anyone else on the team that can sneak a goal to keep us in the match or lift the entire team (and the crowd) with a sensational running goal
That is not a good response to argue with either coz if Ablett wasn't there forever being the opportunist then am sure that someone else would step up and fill that role! So you didn't notice Dangerfield bobbing up in the forward line as a midfielder? What about Touhy from defense?!? ...or Kelly?!? ...or Duncan?!? ...or when Narkle done it on debut?!? ...or Joel Selwood but he was prolly adjusting to a different role now that Ablett is there for that.

I doubt that someone else would be able to step up and do what Ablett did with those goals. Take the goal against Gold Coast, where he ran towards the boundary, and from 50m out slotted the goal. Running through the players you suggested:

Duncan, Kelly, Selwood and Dangerfield don't have the accuracy or the goal sense to kick those kinds of goals. They would centre the ball rather than back themselves with the shot

Narkle wouldn't have the distance, he'd get the accuracy, but struggle to get it to the goal square

Tuohy is the only other player on the team I'd back to kick the goal, but even then, he is better off the set shot than he is on the run

Arguing that 'Ablett is forever an opportunist' is pretty lousy too. It's the kind of player he is - he's built a career around being prolific on the ball, but when the opportunity arises, he loves to kick a goal. That's what he is in the team to do - play as a goal-kicking midfielder

Take that goal where the Cats' position in the finals relied on it against Richmond in Rnd20 last season when he had time to settle from about 40meters out on a 45degree angle and seal the win in the final stage of the game ...ohh nevermind, he sprayed it and the Cats went down by 3pts.

You are generalizing, if they needed to back themselves then at least 2 of those guys I know are dependable kicks(Duncan/J.Selwood)
Narkle wouldn't have the distance, he'd get the accuracy, but struggle to get it to the goal square
You don't remember his first goal on debut? Narkle kicked it from the 50meter line!

Ok then<_<

One of the great comments. I simply love watching him go to work. I know it is sacrilegious to say but I think he is better than his old man. Not more talented but better career! I love him
Old Gaz could spit out young Gary's 2018 highlights package in one quarter of footy.Carey is the only challenger to old Gaz in my opinion I find it hard to split those two..
