It wasn't so much the free kicks it was more the fact carlton had no rotations and lost the benefit of a fresh 2nd half sub whilst geelong got a goal out of their sub thurlow.

No one hates St Kilda or Melbourne because they are irrelevant and not a threat.

Don't know about that, I recall plenty of dislike for St Kilda around 2009-10 when they were at the peak of their powers (mind you, I don't imagine too many neutrals would've jumped on the Pies in the 2010 GF).

Just goes to show that sustained success breeds jealously and hatred amongst others. It's recently occurred to Sydney (COLA, Goodes, Buddy, Tippett, etc.) and now it's being directed at us. Get used to it. :thumbsu:

Thats 3 consecutive games gifted to them by umpires.

They caused your lot to lose by 6 goals? Now I've heard it all.

Nah. Sustained ducking and simulating for frees breeds enmity in others. The carrying on by the coach at every decision also make me sick of this team.

A Hawk fan not liking Geelong

A Hawk fan who had the displeasure of living in a town down the road from Sleepy Hollow for 8 years of his youth and thus had the further displeasure of every 2nd one eyed redneck in the town claiming Geelong were gonna win the flag every year long before they ever looked like winning anything.
My dislike for Geelong has nothing to do with whom I barrack for.
How good you have become has just cemented the hatred;)

Doesnt mean I dont respect you though gad damn it.

Haha Toughen up princess-worry about your own team perhaps.

Why? Cos it doesn't suit your biased argument?

The count could be 20-1 but if those 20 are there and the 1 isn't and happens to give a match winning goal to the side...

There's obviously no conspiracy but the free kick tonight was incredibly ordinary and would be called play on the vast majority of the time. The fact the controlling umpire did call play on and had to be overruled by someone who could not have had a clear view of the incident based off how far away he was only adds fuel to the flames.

Yes the cats almost kicked themselves out of it in the third, but the goal that got them home should never have been paid.

Geelong supporters this thread is a great example of a thing called jealousy. Enjoy the hate from others, it happens to all successful teams and people.

This has nothing to do with jealousy.

Geelong happen to have been very successful in recent years.
Geelong have also routinely been the beneficiaries of contentious umpiring decisions in the dying seconds in recent years.

I don't care if the Cat's free kick differential is in the negative, this isn't what the thread is about.
Plain and simple, when the going is tight, no team gets the rub of the green like Geelong do.

Thought we were lucky not to lose but clearly we should've won... All our games this year we play better get our 4-5 goal lead and then decide to drop down a gear as though we've won the game with a second half still remaining. Very unlike Geelong. It's as though we're comfortable being a mere 10 point lead instead of locking in a game for good and putting the opposition away like in the days of old!

Problem is this whole year we've been doing that and just scrounging by.. it shows weakness and the opposition see an opportunity and boost like all hell and Geelong make their weekly game much harder for by giving the opposition these windows of hope instead of shattering their confidence and putting them away liek we used to. It's as though we've been training harder or our fitness and flow is not up to scratch this year.

You clearly received favouritism in that game. The week before Leigh Fisher adjudicated in a prejudicial manner against Fremantle and for Carlton, in particular Marc Murphy. There is a problem in the umpiring ranks, the umpires boss may not want to expose it, but he has given hints of his concern. Ballantyne had three kicks paid against him in the Geelong game, but has averaged one free for the last 5 years. Have a look at the frees, and decide for yourself if they were all warranted. Hint: they weren't. Crowley also had three kicks paid against him, compared to an average of 1 or 2 frees against in the last 5 years.

Fremantle often get beaten in disposals, or tackles, but find ways to win. Funnily enough, they often don't win the clearances, this was a real problem against Carlton.

But you didn't get free kicks within the rules. You got free kicks despite the rules. Bartel ducked his head so as to cause contact to the tackler. The correct decision is play on, but. Bartel got his first goal. His second goal also came as a result of a duck, but this time the Fremantle players avoided contact and Bartel threaded the goal. The AFL addressed this situation clearly at the end of last season, but the umpires chose to ignore the rules.
Same goes for Christensen and Mackie. Johnsons head duck was comical. Johnson was also guilty of staging for free kicks on a number of occasions. That is not within the rules. It is cheating.

I have already said that I don't think Selwood cheats in the same manner, although I don't think he should get a free kick for his patented shoulder shrug. Should be Play on, tried to draw head contact. But that is not the current interpretation, so it's not cheating.

Nice quote by Kennedy. But there is a difference between putting your head over the ball, and leading with your head. The real danger is that AFL or lower grade players playing the Geelong way will suffer serious neck or head injuries. We saw an Adelaide player doing the Geelong duck and almost break his neck.
I'm sure Freo will get evening up of free kicks this week. Seemed to work for Malthouse earlier in the year. And Pannell umpiring...

not unless they change their tactics behind the play. If they do that, they will get hammered and topple out of premiership contention as they simply don't have the overall class to hang with teams unless they can get under the players skin to take them out of their comfort zone.

Free kick count will be clearly won by Hawthorn I reckon.

Touchy ones both ways, maybe more the Blues way. We just accept it and grind out a win, no complaints here. Don't be like Freo and carry on like pork chops for the entire week, I beg you.

I bet it will be 90% Dockers and Hawks that will continue to carry on about it...

Exactly.

They are dead last in free kick differential for a reason. Freo players are undisciplined... It is that simple!

Will be interesting to see who the neutrals will be going for next Saturday night. For the last 5 years I think it would have 75/25 in Geelong's favour.
Probably still will be. Media brainwashing (read floggy channel 7 commentators)

Plain and simple, that's because we have players who simply refuse to give up no matter how many goals they are down with only minutes remaining. It is why Caddy, Selwood, Christensen won free kicks for demanding the footy and throwing their bodies in harms way to win the footy even if a free kick was necessary. You don't like it then go watch another sport.

I didn't hear all this bitching and moaning when Selwood and Geelong won the free kick count on grand final day 2007, guess we were something new and refreshing that the opposition fans didn't mind huh?
Typical case of tall poppy syndrome because as soon as you get too much of a good thing, they quickly turn.

Probably because to complain about the umpiring in a 119 result just looks really dumb. Sure, it's probably dumb to complain about umpiring anyway, but the venting has more context when the result is close.

I can categorically say this won't be the case because it is blatantly obvious the supporters are sick and tired of this team that keep on winning while their own team struggle to bridge the gap.
Only need to read the first page of the game day thread to see that the theme was set for the night (regards to umpires).

Fremantle supporters the worst who were strangely missing prior to last weeks loss for some reason. Now they're starting up threads and whinging like they deserve respect or something.

Personally I find I vent more when the result is close. Coincidentally that has occurred often against the cats in recent years....

I'd say (and often do at games) that Puopolo has mastered the ancient art of duck style kung fu. Leads with the head IMO. Doesn't seem to be picked up by commentators though.

I was surprised this year that the media decided to shaft their new "pet" Hawthorn out of a flag chance only for the Hawks to prove they are indeed a top side worthy of comparisons with the other 1 (or 2) best teams in afl history. Honestly I feel Geelong were getting the credit they deserved until 2010... if anything reputation should've increased during that time for not dropping off and breaking the afl formula due to wise list choices and honourable development through homegrown culture. All from initiative not handouts. The Hawks seem to have also beaten the formula and stayed in contention from their own success but as with Geelong (and still is) time will tell. Seems as though the media expects teams to fall and isn't happy when they beat the system. I'd say Hawks are currently in that Geelong 2010ish era and were expected to fall this year, but also beat the system. There's around 14 other teams in the league who's culture is just dreadful/incomparible in comparison. It's amazing the freedom/lack of discipline those clubs allow their list to subdivide culture and affiliate with crime. Tom Harley would've told them all to **** off and stop wasting the clubs time almost 10yrs ago now.

Anyway who's the current media pet? Sydney?? I don't think there is one, they keep going on about our nine lives bullshit but more in the context of negativity it's as though there's no hype towards any side currently whatsoever.
