Jordan Ivey can play as a small forward too.

hmm, she's quite tall I thought Winty? I've seen her named at CHF a couple of times .. but just looking at her I'd have thought she was one of our taller, more strongly built girls ..

Further on Jordan Ivey, I thought she looked understandably a bit off the pace in most games I saw her play this year - absolutely dominated a game last year, I think it was against Hawthorn, clear best on ground that day with tons of disposals and a couple of goals (including a very nice banana from memory).
She's yet to recapture anything like that kind of form from what I've seen, hoping she can find some touch again in 2019.

edit: she's 173cm, so, pretty much average height for the team - taller than Cranston, 1cm shorter than Anna Teague ..

Ford Australia’s partnership with the Geelong Cats will move into a new era, after Ford officially extended its sponsorship to support the club’s inaugural AFLW side until 2020.

One of the longest sports team partnerships in the world, Ford’s support of the Geelong Cats is currently in its 93rd year.

Geelong Cats CEO Brian Cook recognised Ford’s commitment to women’s sport and the Geelong community in which these women live, work and play.

“Ford’s commitment to our inaugural AFLW team demonstrates their support of women in football and our club as a whole,” Cook said.

“Since 1925, Ford have supported the club’s development, progress and success and now they join us as we embark on our first AFLW season.

“Ford and the club carry similar organisational values, a key reason why our partnership has remained strong and successful.

“Our inaugural AFLW season will be a historical one for the club, and we are delighted that Ford will be alongside us for the journey,” Cook said.

Ford Australia is proud to be extending and diversifying its support of the club, a partnership which will demonstrate Ford’s support of women following their dreams to play at the elite level and the positive impact this inspiring AFLW competition has on the community.

“Ford embraces diversity and inclusion, it’s an intrinsic part of our success,” said Kay Hart, President & CEO, Ford Australia & NZ.

“We’re excited to see Geelong compete in the AFLW next year.

“We’re extremely proud to see the Ford logo on the Cats guernsey of these women who have achieved remarkable things in their sporting careers, who live the values of teamwork and commitment each day, values we also champion at Ford,” Hart said.

Great to see

If Nina Morrison nominated only the Geelong region does this effectively mean we could draft her with our last pick if we wanted (and use the earlier picks to draft people who may have nominated more than one region)?

The AFL have warned that the rule will be 'policed' - so I don't think we could do that.
All the work will be done pre-draft in convincing girls to nominate for Geelong.

Regarding the upcoming draft and our likely #1 pick:

Using an AFLW draft rule to her advantage, Morrison has nominated Geelong as her preferred draft region, meaning she will be playing for the Cats next year.

But even if she selected “all of Victoria”, Morrison would still end up at the Cats, such is the club’s conviction that she is worthy of being taken with their first pick in the draft.

In theory, Geelong exploit the rule by picking up Morrison with a late pick given no other club has the ability to take her, but the Cats believe the Falcons’ ace deserves the accolades of a high selection.

Bring on draft night - can't wait to see who else we draft

Bugger the accolades. Nina deserves, and would probably prefer, a top quality team mate.

We also have pick #2 - she will get a top quality teammate; we have 3 picks in the top 7 so surely we'll pick up some quality players there:

FIRST ROUND
1 Geelong
2 Geelong
3 Carlton
4 Fremantle
5 Collingwood
6 Melbourne
7 Geelong
8 Adelaide
9 Brisbane
10 Western Bulldogs
11 Collingwood
12 Greater Western Sydney

yeah I'm looking forward to it too - a poster 'in the know' on the AFLW board suggests we can look forward to the following girls nominating the Cats:

Nina Morrison
Olivia Purcell
Denby Taylor
Georgia Clarke
Bec Webster

all should be able to come in and make an immediate impact ...

Wells attention turn to this draft next Tuesday? Or is someone else doing the drafting of the girls

I dunno who will be calling out the names, can't imagine Wells would get a ton of time to watch the girls comps but he may well be steering the ship, overseeing things - I have no idea tbh!

anyway:

A few mock drafts are starting to appear in the media ahead of tomorrow's draft; this one is interesting as it has Sophie Van De Heuval coming to Geelong at #2; prior to an article I read yesterday I had no idea that she would even be available to us - but then again, I've not been able to find any kind of official, public listing of player nominations online, most player nomination decisions I've seen have trickled out via individual interviews or media speculation.

The AFLW draft is a bit of a funny one, especially for us Geelong fans, due to the nomination process - despite having the #1 & #2 selections we are unable to draft Victorian girls Maddie Prespakis or Tyla Hanks, who are excellent players and may well have gone at #1 & #2 in an open draft.
Fortunately Geelong has a strong local zone - and all going well should be able to draft one of the best girls talents next year in Lucy McEvoy.

It takes a bit of the guess work (and, maybe, fun) out of things, as we know that WA clubs will have exclusive access to virtually all the WA girls, SA clubs exclusive access to all the SA girls and so on - Victoria is a split into 3 areas of nomination: Metro, Geelong or both (Victoria).

We know who 3 of our draftees will be:

GEELONG has committed to selecting star Geelong Falcons trio Nina Morrison, Olivia Purcell and Denby Taylor in Tuesday’s AFL Women’s National Draft.

The Cats have ten picks in at what will be the club’s first draft ahead of its entry into the AFLW competition in 2019.

Geelong has been able to announce it is selecting Morrison, Purcell and Taylor after all three selected the Cats as their preferred destination.

Also from the same article & in more good news from the clubs perspective:

MEANWHILE, the Cats have welcomed Deakin Unversity as a co-major sponsor of its AFLW team as part of a multi-year partnership.

The deal will see Geelong utilise the Elite Sports Precinct at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus as its primary training venue in the lead-up to the 2019 season.

“Deakin is passionate about inspiring women to achieve their goals in whatever they choose to do, which is why we are thrilled to continue our support of the Geelong Cats to achieve its goals in the AFLW league,” vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander said.

“We know that sport is good for our health and fitness, along with emotional well-being and socialisation, but we also know that girls continue to drop out of sport before boys, so it’s been particularly exciting to watch the VFLW competition inspire so many more girls into sport.”

It's a good article that gives background info on each of the 3 girls ahead of tonights drafting.

The Cats have taken Sophie Van De Heuval with #2 ...

Most of the talk in the lead-up to the draft speculated that Olivia Purcell might be 'rewarded' for her great form as a teenaged VFLW top-up player in 2018.

The club has played it smarter than that though; Purcell is off-limits to other clubs and can be claimed by the Cats later on, whereas the talented Van De Heuval was available for any Victorian club, and probably would've been around the top half dozen prospects in an open draft.

Sophie is also a talented junior cricketer, and she plans on juggling the two sports for the forseeable future.

Van De Heuval is a classy player, similar to Nina Morrison in that she is nominally an athletic 'outside' type player with very good skills.
Recorded the best vertical leap at the draft.

Watching her play during the girls U/18s champs, she was able to accumulate and dispose of the ball with ease; very quick and well-balanced with sharp reactions.
Her kicking technique looks very good, *however* from what I've seen she can spray it around a bit, particularly in front of goal.

#14 Olivia Purcell

From the Geelong Falcons, played some impressive football for our VFLW team late in the year, including a couple of really strong finals.

She is just a nutter this girl; first thought is to tackle, tackle, tackle - gets to work at the base of every pack. Terrific player, all heart

3x round 2 selections to come:

#14
#20
&
#24

Purcell, Taylor and Clarke I'm guessing ..

Got 2 out of 3 there. Purcell and Taylor are at the Cattery, with one pick to come in the 2nd round. :)
