Geelong rorting the system

It has everything to do with it. Brisbane played above the rules, and still whalloped you.

What rules did Geelong break that affected the result on Grand Final day?

Nothing you can conclusive point to that affected the outcome.
Just a silly argument to distract from the fact they whooped your team as well.

Has literally zero to do with this thread 😂
Time to hop off bud 👋

Tippetgate was 200 thousand dollars over the salary cap.

Geelong was found to not breach the salary cap.

Do you get the difference? One club did not cheat the salary cap while the other club did cheat.
the $200K was outside the player payments but did NOT cause the TPP to be exceeded

GROK - the question asked

did the $200000 payment made to Kurt Tippett by the adelaide crows outside of the salary cap cause the total player payments at the adelaide crows to exceed the maximum salary cap or did that external payment still fit inside the total player cap for that season

The answer

No, the $200,000 payment to Kurt Tippett did not cause Adelaide Crows' total player payments (TPP) to exceed the AFL salary cap for the relevant season.
The payment was part of improper side agreements designed to circumvent cap rules, but official AFL findings confirmed that the club's overall TPP—including the secret payments—remained under the limit.

Key Details on the Breach

  • Timeline and Payments: The scandal involved a 2010 contract extension for Tippett (covering 2013–2016), with secret side deals for extra payments outside the salary cap. These included $100,000 in both 2011 and 2012, plus up to $200,000 tied to third-party sponsorships (e.g., from Balfours, where Tippett appeared in ads). The $200,000 figure often refers to the total hidden incentives across the deal.
  • Salary Cap for 2012: The AFL's TPP limit was $8.78 million per club.
  • Why It Was a Breach: The payments violated rules on third-party agreements (clubs can't facilitate unapproved deals) and draft tampering (secret clauses to block trades). However, unlike cases like Carlton (2002) or Essendon (2010s), where TPP exceeded limits, Adelaide's total payments stayed compliant.
  • AFL Ruling and Penalties (November 2012):
    • Crows fined $300,000; lost draft picks (first-rounders in 2013 and 2014).
    • Tippett suspended for 11 games (first half of 2013) and fined $50,000.
    • CEO Malcolm Blight and GM Phil Harper banned; no TPP sanctions like repayments, as the cap wasn't exceeded.
  • Club Statement: Then-CEO Andrew Trigg noted, "Adelaide had never exceeded the salary cap," emphasizing the issue was improper conduct, not overspending.

This case highlighted flaws in third-party rules, leading to tighter AFL oversight, but the Crows' TPP fit within the cap even including the hidden $200,000.

SO.....we didn't exceed the cap, we did pay him outside it and then laughably they also hit us for having an agreement to trade OUR player at THE END of his contract for a 2nd rounder...no different to any club asking for whatever after a player is OOC.

So geelong is vindicated. Just silly admin errors that every other club would have if they ever had to go through the same process

"The AFL conducted an 'extended audit' covering the 2019-2024 seasons, which found that the Cats did not breach the AFL's total player payments limit, or the AFL player movement rules, at any time in that period."
Apparently a few mobile phones, laptops and bottles of wine were handed out. Surely another club has never thought of that. If they do, we're screwed.

Piss taking aside i think public perception will hurt Geelong more than the actual penalty.

People look to them as a standard of professionalism in the AFL along with the negative reactions of Bailey Smith/Mad Monday its not been a good year for them.

what a joke Blues got done for third party payments for roughly that amount but got fined $1m and stripped from two drafts. Geelong must be AFL's Nepo baby .. home ground advantage, allowed salary cap rorting

Roughly what amount? I can’t find a source even saying what we spent? In fact I can’t find a source saying we spent anything illegal.

The fines are not for breaching the cap.

“The Extended Audit found, on the basis of the information obtained and reviewed by the AFL, that the Club did not breach the AFL TPP Limit nor the AFL player movement rules in any season within the timeframe assessed.“

Finishing 2nd... you're right it was an average year. We can do better

"didn't breach the salary cap"

"admin errors around third party payments"

Isn't this splitting hairs.

The accusation / assumption of the masses for everyone other than Geelong supporters is they rort the cap by paying players outside of it.

This vague statement and wet lettuce leaf fine does nothing but pour fuel on the fire that is the AFL's incompetence in these matters.

Why not be transparent?
If the AFL can come out and say: Our findings are:
  • Cameron got a bottle of wine on this date
  • They gave out 15 laptops
  • Late in reporting this this and this.

Then I think everyone would be more than satisfied and this whole "saga" would be over.

But they haven't. And you can't help but fill the blanks in these scenarios. The absence of information speaks volume.

Did anyone really expect the AFL's spoilt child to be properly sanctioned?
They’ve definitely got some “sympathetic “ ears in high places in the AFL for sure .
The fact that Steve hocking goes from legacy cats administrator to AFL house and straight back to Geelong few years later does not install one with much confidence in the AFLs impartiality

Greg swann’s ascension to AFL power broker a siimilar story

At the end of day the AFL operates exactly like any inherently corrupt major corporation with unlimited market control

I doubt it, they have just got away with a crime that was very similar to the crows and instead of getting multiple years of draft sanctions, they barely get a slap on the wrist. They won't care one jot as they have got away with it and it will be water off a ducks back.

Well no it isn’t splitting hairs.

If they find something and say ‘ok you are allowed to do this but you HAVE to disclose it or it’s a breach of the rules’ as opposed to ‘look here you’ve blatantly paid someone $200,000 beyond what you’re allowed to either within the cap or with third party sponsors’ then they are clearly two different things.

Only difference really is the AFL had evidence because you actually wrote down how you were planning the Tippett under the table Balfour deal.
