Geelong vs pies final should not be at the mcg.

What's next, Grand Final in Geelong?

The ground isn't finals standard. Reverse the roles, why can't Collingwood host a final at Victoria Park, or Carlton at Princess Park or Bulldogs at Whitten Oval? The bleeding obvious reason is none of those grounds have a suitable crowd capacity for a finals game in Victoria.

The very next best option to the MCG to hold a final in Victoria was once Waverley, with today's next best being Docklands. At 50k that's still not enough and is a last resort if the MCG isn't available.

Waverley with its 75-80k would still be a far better option even today.
Yep, let's just get rid of GMHBA. We should all just play at the G every week. Problem solved. I'm fine with that.

SCG 48,000. A magnificent stadium comfort and TV spectacle wise.

Also a false equivalence anyway given the MCG is the home of footy.

The MCG is actually a good venue for Geelong. It is 1 hour away and your winning % there is 55% over a century which is above Collingwood (53), Melbourne (52), North Melbourne (50) and Carlton (47).

Lets talk when Kardinia Park renovations are finished but not 2022.
An hour away lol. it often takes nearly an hour just to get from the west gate bridge to the ground these days.

If it was us or WB or North we wouldn’t get to play it at Marvel, so it’s not like this is some anti-Geelong thing.
1) you should be able to.
2) its not the same as you are still playing in your home city in front of all your fans. The mcg is just as easy to get to as docklands from stkilda And its closer to north melbourne.

Finals are league games, they arent club games.

The league dictates the preferred venue, and they use finals as leverage for stadium contract negotiations.

As mentioned it is home state final, this also is a financial decision. As for an EF between Port and Freo, no guarantee will get 30k if play it at the MCG...so play it in the home state of highest ranked club guarantees a huge local crowd and build up.

In 2016 the league played the Sydney v GWS QF at Stadium Australia, because of the predicted interest. It wasnt at the SCG despite Sydney being minor premier.

If the league felt that playing the PF at Stadium Australia would make as much money and generate interest in West Sydney (a strategic goal) it would have played it there. But as it was they went with Showground stadium, and they were prpbably right as the crowd was smaller than the GWS v Sydney H&A game there.

Geelong played finals for 120 years at Waverley/MCG. It is laughable that they now think they are entitled to "home" finals at a minor venue.
You are literally quoting a post showing an example where its not the biggest stadium in the home state. Nor even the biggest in the city.

and if its not about being the biggest stadium. Then why isnt it at geelong. Geelong is in victoria.

North played 2 games at the MCG
St Kilda played 2 games at the MCG
Dogs played 2 games at the MCG

Geelong played 5 games at the MCG

Would have been a bigger travesty if the docklands teams were forced to play at the MCG

Yeah, I'd agree that Marvel teams should get to play there if they earned a top spot.

I got a friend into the game and he thought it was very weird that the Cats wouldn't get to play at home. As mentioned, it just wouldn't happen in North American sport (or pretty much anywhere). Just one of those unusual things about the game I guess.

Yes, Geelong were forced to play two of their home games at the venue that isn't their home ground. Great effort by Geelong to finish first when they only get 9 home games.

It's a bit like when Gold Coast play two of their home games at the Gabba......oh wait....

but surely if Gold Coast ever finished 1st and Brisbane finished 4th....Gold Coast would earn the right to a home final at the Gabba yeah? That's how it works doesn't it?

It will make a mockery of the competition if the clear competition leader is playing its home final in front of 75 thousand screaming pies fans at the ground the pies play 15 games at each season when the pies finished fourth.

we can not have a repeat of the ridiculous 2017 finals series.

surely the competition has moved beyond the amateurish of playing finals where crowds are highest at the expense of fairness. Other professional sports do not do this.

note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final and the crowds arent heavily biased to mcg tenants due to fans travelling and all the neutral fans. So please dont bring grand final arguments into this thread as its not equivalent.

play the game at either kardinia and if thats not possible (it is) then play at least docklands.

for the sake of the competition.
You realise the rules say you get a home state final. Is the MCG not in your home state?

True - and the same for soccer - but if I understand correctly, they are used to tickets being a king’s ransom and stadium capacity isn’t such an issue

Oh like the draw of 2017, when your mob played Carlton and Adelaide twice?
The draw is predicated on guesses and a shifty little thing that could be equalisation.
Pies go from 17th to 4th, who would have thought.
Cats bagged as pensioners last year and this, no one picked a top finish.
So guesses on future form, unless the AFL has a crystal ball and is
guided by BF numptys in their tin hats.

Actually i mean playing every team twice.

It must be great for teams that always get scheduled to play their games at their training venue but most have moved past the 1960s.

We will answer that question when we come to it, but with the Gabba getting knocked down I would say it’s more likely Brisbane would host the Suns on the GC
Ahahahahaha. What kind of a response is that? We will answer that question when we come to it?
No answer it now.
If this year (Gabbas not knocked down yet) Gold Coast finished first and Brisbane 4th, Gold Coast would've earnt the right to home state final at the Gabba. That's how everyone is telling me it works. If that's not how it works, give me a good reason why, because I'm not getting it.

Everybody knows that the rule is wrong
Why should Geel "win" the right to be forced to host the match at Coll/Richmond's home ground? Surely even the biggest fool can see that that's illogical.
This year when GBH Stadium is out of action, Geel should be asked where they'd like to host the game and I imagine they'd choose marvel. If so - it should be played there.

Well you really can’t answer it as it hasn’t happened. Sure you can go down that path that the AFL is just out to get you but then again you could just open your other eye

Twice x 18? That would be great, we could play the GF on Christmas day.

The bee in your bonnet has crawled up your butt.
GMHBA is not going away, only getting bigger- just like you playing finals undeservedly at your home ground..
Let's all just.....Suck it up

Reduce the number of teams and start the season early. Get rig of the byes. See, thinking out of the box isnt hard.
