Geelong vs pies final should not be at the mcg.

US sports are completely different, private owners, individual TV contracts, best of series, just a completely different sporting landscape.

Yep.

It is a beautiful thing having 90k fans of supporters not segregated like in most sport competitions.

Cats v Pies have had some crackers in finals recently, with Cats having the edge.

Sad that a few idiots ruin the build up with the same entitled sookfest every year.

2007 Prelim is probably the best atmosphere I've experienced.

What’s GMHBA’s expected capacity post renovations? Assuming it is less than half the MCG’s capacity would the AFL have still signed off for it to be played there? Engaging in hypotheticals here but just can’t see the AFL doing so when it knows it could have an additional 40k pies fans at a bigger stadium

See what?

AFL does have a contract for finals with the MCG.

Finals are about making the league money.

Why rent an 80k stand when only 25k supporters will rock up? You lose money and it has a s**t atmosphere.

The 2016 PF had a smaller crowd than a regular GWS v Sydney game at that time.

The 2016 QF between Syd and GWS wasnt at the SCG, it was at Stadium Australia because 60k+ were projected to rock up.

Is your argument that Cat Park wont be filled anyway, so no point playing Geelong finals at bigger stadiums?

classic collingwood fan actually advocating for the AFL's backwardness

It will make a mockery of the competition if the clear competition leader is playing its home final in front of 75 thousand screaming pies fans at the ground the pies play 15 games at each season when the pies finished fourth.

we can not have a repeat of the ridiculous 2017 finals series.

surely the competition has moved beyond the amateurish of playing finals where crowds are highest at the expense of fairness. Other professional sports do not do this.

note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final and the crowds arent heavily biased to mcg tenants due to fans travelling and all the neutral fans. So please dont bring grand final arguments into this thread as its not equivalent.

play the game at either kardinia and if thats not possible (it is) then play at least docklands.

for the sake of the competition.
Haha - the annual Geelong meltdown. One of my favourite football traditions - right up there with the Port wanting to wear Collingwoods jumper or West Coast fans complaining about joining the VFL and having to play the GF in Melbourne.

Did you really just type that a long skinny ground is harder to defend than a wide ground? You do realise the hardest part of maintaining defensive grids is moving side to side in unison, don’t you? So if a ground is 30m thinner it makes it far easier to move your grid side to side….

Think about it … what’s easier to defend… a ground 250m long and 50m wide, or a ground 150m long and 150m wide?

Now I’ve typed this I’m actually thinking u were taking the P155…. but I’m not sure ..?!???

Only two KP games in the last six years have seen both sides reach >80 points. None since 2019.

The games are usually defensive slugfests with rolling grids and teams kicking it out on the full - probably because the wings and pockets aren’t even the same shape.

The OP is an idiot.

So after the Cats lose to the Pies and the Dogs make the Semi, will it be Cats and Dogs be at Marvel?

Too many punters for GMH in its current state and not enough to warrant unlocking the G.

3 away finals after finishing top would be unlucky.

They would have to close the roof, could be raining cats and dogs.

Dogs last two finals crowds in Melbourne, both wins

Would be nice to have one at MCG again!

???

They make Dogs play Adelaide at the G in finals.

Many a Dogs v Cats final played at the G.

Would get a crowd 65-75k, way too big for Etihad.

Cats much more familiar with the G than the Dogs, so a home advantage for them too.

True but the 99k was a GF and the 87k the only final played in Melbourne that week.
There would be another Melbourne final this semi final week in my prediction between Dee's and tigers.

Prior to '16 you had Adelaide with 60k in a losing EF in '15 and a couple of 60k's and a 40k in '10.

Yes they have a mcg contract. But there is no rule saying games have to be played in the biggest available stadium in the state.

Except in Victoria. Remember how they used to have to have one game every week at the MCG, even if Brisbane had to host Geelong there in a preliminary final? To change that contract so that interstate sides wouldn't have to host games in Victoria, the AFL agreed to play all Victorian finals at the MCG unless there was a clash. There are no more clashes since the bye and the Thursday night final, and they have stated if all 4 finals are hosted by Victorian teams in week 1, they will play a Sunday game.

All of which were also at MCG, so I think you can safely lock MCG in

Many?
Twice in the past 20yrs and both during Geelong's 'dynasty' in 08 and 09.

So geelong is discriminated against by a rubbish rule with the MCG that geelong had no involvement in.

maybe you get why we are pissed.

Billy Brownless is King of Geelong final was at the G.

Simple, Victorian finals are at the G.

Not sure why people dont understand this yet?
Cos they shouldnt be when geelong has earnt a home final.

the appeal to tradition is an appeal to stupidity.

if we still went off tradition women wouldnt even have the right to vote.
