Hey I want to be like Nat Fyfe, or Dwaye Johnson, or Dave Grohl or Chris Helmsworth...... but i don't want to work at it .

Really difficult to draw a line on that McKenzie post.....

It's very emotive, which suggests there could be a bit of "disgruntled former employee" or "young bloke after a few frothies" about it.

Clearly he has some issues, and feel like he's been let down by the club and their welfare people, he's probably just taken the wrong approach to venting his frustration. If he's genuine about not wanting anyone else to go thru the same, he could have worded it better, or taken a different route (mainstream media, tell all interview etc.) and gained more attention.

I really hope he finds another footy home, or a job in the real world, that cares more for his mental health issues and he can get the help he needs.

And really poor form from Richmond for the silence clause.....

Would absolutely take McKenzie if I thought his mental health would stand it.

Dispassionately, he's a 197cm 104kg key forward with hands like a vice, a sub-3 second 20mtr sprint, and both an axe to grind and a point to prove.

Passionately, I don't think he should ever be anywhere near an AFL club again.

I dunno man. Look, clearly the guy has issues and I hope they can be dealt with, and wish him all the best - I really, really do.

But, let's assume, just for a second, that he is an a-grade delusional nutter. What if Richmond tried their very best, and couldn't have reasonably done more, but his mental health issues made the whole thing untenable. They'd be perfectly within their rights to stop him perpetuating his delusions about them. If what he is saying is delusional, that will still unfairly damage their ability to get in future players, significantly so.

Look, they may well have been turds, and maybe he's totally in the right here. I'm just saying, I'm not going to judge him, or the Richmond Footy Club for any of this. They could well be as much victims in this situation as he is. That's all I'm saying.

Yeah, totally understand....

But you give a guy with mental health issues (including suicidal thoughts) a "clause for life", he might just go and make himself a martyr, which would be a terrible result for everyone involved.

Richmond would probably have been better off letting this guy air his grievances, then come out in PR mode with "we tried our best, weren't good enough in welfare, doing this, this and this to make sure it doesn't happen again, providing support to McKenzie....etc.

Really hard for us to know from the outside.
Maybe Richmond really did treat him poorly.
Maybe he got upset because the coach yelled at him after he played badly.

His VFL performances in 2015 didn't exactly set the world on fire, and it seems he has issues a lot bigger than football.
You should NOT need to be an AFL player to want to stay alive.
Essentially he needs to find the right help, and if having a vent at Richmond was something he needed to do, well I'm sure the Tigers will get over it.

You would hope an AFL club would have some decent people and procedures in place though.
You would.

But then again;

Dustin Martin pre Richmond

Seems like he wasn't given the best of care down there. Seems also like maybe there were signs of being unwell from the beginning and they were ignored because of his physical attributes. I hope he gets to where he wants to go in life or finds a happy place.

Was having a look about the Richmond board thread about this.

Some of them are saying that what Reece is saying can't be correct because he's depressed.

I wouldn't be automatically defending Richmond, just because somebody is mentally ill doesn't mean they are wrong about everything...

It is tricky. I've known severely depressed people that have had aspects of delusion, narcissism, buck passing, pathological lying, various personality disorders, and straight up contradictory brat tantrums. You're dancing around a severe, sensitive issue, at the same time as trying to piece together the extent you are being used, possibly abused, and how to protect yourself.

Not saying that the kid is definitely behaving in a certain way. It can be just a really tricky situation.

Some things are black and white, and some things are impossible to get to the bottom of - especially when there is an obvious wrong to campaign lies around and paint whatever picture you want (which is extremely common in life, sadly). What the hell do you do? It's easy to think that we can understand somebody, but a lot of people barely understand themselves, and are complex and troubled beyond belief.

I'm stressed out just thinking of it.
