Ablett maybe the better player but I bet GWS in getting better value for money for Johnson than GC is for Ablett.
Maybe.

Hypothetically, if Geelong could find a way to squeeze in Ablett for $1m or Johnson for $500k in 2017, the former would be far better value.

And still about 34 times the player Johnson is.

But won't happen. It is fantasy constructed by Hutchy types because it has media currency.

Ablett appears to be no where near what he was.. yet is SJ much off what he was? Have to be close to each other now.

On the trade..we have done this haven't we? If Ablett was a FA and he was paid to what he is now.. im still not sure we should add him. Could we add another player on 800?
It goes against the grain of what we have done to add someone his age. I acknowledge there is a line of thinking that in this day and age we are almost returning to power sides and a club has to really load up if you are a chance, while you are a chance.

I wish guys like Hutchy and Mclure would say how its going to happen instead just floating this effluent. Put up or shut up.
How much less will Ablett take?
Just what will GC take as a trade that we have got that we are willing to give?

Not just one fantasy.. Doublefantasy.jpg

Would be totally unfair and against what they are building at Geelong to get Ablett back, I would love to see it but think its only a dream now

Think both are on veterans cap which doesnt count to overall cap but mackie would count

That's the old veteran's list system.

The new system makes 130K (1.2% of the TPP) per player who has been at the club for more than 10 seasons not count towards the cap.

Selwood and Hawkins apply from next year but with the new collective bargaining agreement the veterans list might not exist next year.

I'm also not sure how Lonergan's year off our list effects it. I might be remembering it incorrecty but I think Tarrant qualified as a veteran for Collingwood in his final year.

Looks like the rookie list stays and no mid-season trading yet, either, for the coming season at least.
Probably logistical problems in getting the new CBA sorted before the current one expires on 31 October.
This may also put the kybosh on the mooted veteran's list and FA changes as well, at least for this season.

Towers? To borrow from Lana.. Again , not a player that would add enough to be worth the trade pain. These type of players would struggle to be best 22..id rather get kids than pay for a Towers. Get 3 picks under 30 would be better value long term. As a FA fine. Just like Jetta. Im not convinced he is a great add to be honest but FA and dollars only have to be considered.

I'm pretty sure that the decision has already been made to abolish the veterans list at the end of 2017.

Partly correct, my mistake, it's expiration as at this November 2016 is written into the current CBA.
My bad. In light of this, it's probably best if we just retire Hawkins now that we can't put him on the veterans list don't you think? :D

Seriously though, do you think that it could have an impact on the clubs decision to retain players such as Lonergan and Jimmy?

I have a preference for us to look to the draft this year (not that I've seen any U18s footy this year) and I also don't think we have too many pieces to use to land anyone of note (but that may change between now and season's end).

If we want to add players, I tend to think some can be uncovered on teams Rookie lists and they are the types who might be more easily obtained using the 'opportunity' pitch and they shouldn't break the bank.

Towers, I think, has usually been played as an mid sized forward (which I think we probably have covered) but he has recently played more minutes in the midfield. While he could add some depth I'm not sure we should be giving up too much simply for a depth player and Towers may required more than we should or could pay.

So, in the spirit of what I just said about looking to Rookie Lists why not have a look at Sydney's Nic Newman?

He is a mid sized rebounding defender drafted out of Frankston a couple of year's ago and is currently pressing for senior selection with a string of good twos form this year.

He fits the age profile, has been in a good system at the Swans for a couple of years and is likely to still have some development left in him. I'd say he could also play right away if required. Not sure he'd cost too much and should be able to provide some rebound out of defence. A reasonably good user of the ball too by all accounts.

Just throwing it out there.

I doubt it, the problem is probably more acute for borderline players (which Bartel/Lonergan clearly are not), and/or players in clubs which are lower and/or rebuilding, especially if they have more vets than the AFL average.

The way it works, as I understand it, is that the AFL totals the no. of vets in the league, multiplies that no. by $130,000, divides that figure by 18, then adds that amount to each club's TPP. So, as we have more vets than the average, we lose some of our relative advantage v other clubs, but we don't lose all the allowance.

I like nic newman, reckon he could be as cheap as biggs was and have an impact like biggs has.

There is only one scenario in which I'd take Ablett back.

That he plays no more than 4 more games for the Gold Coast and that he returns to a 600k pay cheque.

Enright and Bartel both deciding to retire would clear some cap space.

If this happens it's a sign of gross incompetence on the club's part, as it would undermine the list management and recruiting strategy we pursued over the last trade period and demonstrate a lack of future planning. Bringing in Dangerfield, Smith, Henderson and SSelwood was an attempt to push for a premiership in 2016 and 2017 based on two acknowledgments:

1. That having multiple generational talents like JSelwood, Enright and Taylor on your list in something that happens only rarely, and that in order in ensure the exceptional abilities of those player didn't go to waste while we still had them, we needed to top up our list and make the most of a rare opportunity.
2. In light of the seeming inevitablity of GWS becoming a juggernaut in a few years time, 2016 and 2017 could conceivably be the last seasons for a long time with such open premiership races. The level required may be higher from 2018 onwards.

I realise it's ultimately up to the players whether they decide to go on, but the club needs to factor possible retirements and so on in to their list management and future planning, so if either one of Jimmy or Corey goes, I'd consider that an instance of complete mismanagement by our coaching staff given the form of both players and the choices made by the club last summer.

No more than 5 if I gather your drift.
