Which players were injured that caused disjointment?

  • Lincoln McCarthy has undergone groin surgery
  • Nakia Cockatoo will miss a few weeks of footy after suffering a thumb injury in the win over Fremantle.
  • Guthrie in doubt
  • Defender Jake Kolodjashnij is back in the main training group after a frustrating pre-season
  • Bad luck for Horlo

Just a few headlines without any serious attempt at research. You are aware of these?

AFL site is saying that Smith and Stringer have nominated Essendon. Being in the dark up here away from AFL land, how likely are they (the report) to be on the mark? Is this gamesmanship? filling the news void? or likely to be true? Is it because Essendon have more currency (i.e. draft picks to trade) or is it because we are seen as a crazy club willing to pay top dollar for yesterdays hero?*

(* apologies Vanda and Young)

Players get drafted ... ie gang pressed into playing for whoever ... and people wonder why they want to have a say over where they play?
How does it work in the Rugbee?
Smith and Stringer and probably Saad appear to be heading to the Dons. The have the rain dance going... but its yet to be determined if they can make it all happen ... they have a rep for trying to buy stuff with shallow pockets

If it's anywhere near true that Scott advised "up to" 10 players that they need to find new clubs then we haven't seen anything yet.

Out:

Motlop
Menzel
Lang

7 to go.

Then add
Mackie
Lonergan
Cowan

We are blanket bombing the draft again if this happens.

You confident Menzel will stay Willo?
Might be a case of staying by default due to lack of options.

Apparently Freo has shown interest, but I struggle to see why Ross Lyons, the most defensively minded coach around, would be considering the player who is known to be one of the worse defensive pressure players based on this past season

Linc and Gregson were missed but hardly staples of the side
NC5 has been a full time injury since he came
Guthire played a fair bit hurt..but so do most players
JK prep was hindered
GHS... you are kid right? We were disjoint because GHS was injured.

Essendon have everything they need to get it done.
They'd have a ton of cash.
Plus pick 11, 29 and next years first rounder. More than enough to get it done.

You were saying that if we go back to the draft we'll lose these kids in 3-4 years. I'm saying that there's been no evidence of us having an issue holding on to our players that we want to keep.
OK I get it.

The AFL is a bigger meat market now than ever before. I'd prefer a mature guy in the system for a few years over a newbie who thinks the sky is the limit.

In a nutshell that's about it.

Menzel kicks goals, maybe Ross believes he can cover his weakness going the other way.

ITs funny isn't it.

Some clubs see this as a weak draft maybe we see it as a good draft.

Or maybe we are going to pick up 7 delisted free agents after trade week :D

You are very dismissive ... so most players play a fair bit hurt? He missed a cut throat final.

Linc would be a staple if he was given a clear run. There was a hole we were unable to fill all season due to his absence.

You think Cockatoo's absence wasn't an issue? His whole year was an issue of in injury concerns. That resulted in our preferred set up being screwed from start to the finish.

They are just a few of the injury concerns as you'd be aware.

Is there another Guthrie brother coming up for drafting?
Josh played VFL in 2016 as a 23rd player I believe and then made the VFL squad for this season.

He could be drafted

I know that Ben (oldest brother & journo) tried out for our VFL team but didn't make it

I suppose my retort to that would be that if we were to top up with B or C grade talent, rather than the likes of Dangerfield, Henderson and Tuohy, then we are destined to be a mid table team. Whilst there is risk associated with drafting young kids there is also benefits:

1. You can develop a group of youngsters together such that they feel a bond together over time and have a common goal to achieve.

2. If you can get a group of talented kids together over a 2-3 year period then by the time they reach 50-100 games they all come through together in maturity giving you a strong list at this point of time i.e. our 1999 and 2001 drafts with Corey, Enright, Ling, Bartel, Kelly, SJ, G.Ablett

3. If we can get a strong group of kids over that aforementioned 2-3 year period then you can top up with any gaps via trade rather than doing it the other way round. That seems logically to be a better method to me.

Anyway, only my thoughts. I can understand why the club topped up in recent years. I'd be all for continuing it IF we were to land a couple of big fish like Stringer. But, if we can't, and at the same time lose talented guys like Motlop and Menzel, then I really think we only have one way to go.

I feel the crux of your pov is wrong.. id dont think it was injuries..but more so many fresh faces playing ...but

Losing Guthrie in the final hurt us.
Linc has missed so many game since being on our list..there his inclusion could not be a return to a settled side.
Cockatoo at his best is good but again him in is hardly a return to anything

I mentioned the kid coming off two knee injuries the other day....

AIDEN Bonar has underlined his elite athleticism on day three of the NAB AFL Draft Combine, with the talented prospect equaling the all-time standing vertical jump record.

Aiden Bonar in action during day two of the Combine

The Dandenong Stingrays forward, who returned to the field in the middle of this season after two knee reconstructions, jumped 89cm in the test, drawing him level with Jordan Gallucci from last year's combine (Gallucci was drafted by Adelaide at pick No.15 last year).

But Bonar's impressive efforts didn't stop there. He also recorded a 2.90-second 20-metre sprint, placing him equal second in the speed test.

The 18-year-old looms as one of the most interesting prospects to place ahead of next month's NAB AFL Draft on the back of his injury history, but he is strong, powerful and explosive, and has remained in clubs' thoughts during his time on the sidelines.

Some recruiters see him pushing into the top-25 despite his limited exposure because of his knee issues.

Bonar was beaten to the top of the list in the 20-metre sprint by Northern Knights speedster Jack Petruccelle, who ran at 2.87 seconds to highlight is electric turn of pace.

Petruccelle entered the event as the clear favourite and ran 2.88, 2.87 and 2.87 in his three attempts. Kane Farrell impressed at 2.90 seconds, while Ben Miller and Nick Coffield, who both ran at 2.91, were also among the best performers.

Bonar wasn't the only prospect to etch his name into Combine history on Thursday, with Kyron Hayden setting a new record for the running vertical jump after leaping 103cm.

His huge spring saw him overtake the record of 102cm previously held by Nic Naitanui (at the 2008 combine) and Jared Brennan (in 2002).

The excellent testing result came as something of a surprise from the West Australian midfielder, who stands at only 185cm.

He beat out Farrell and high-marking South Australian forward Jordan Houlahan, who both jumped 95cm, and ruckman/forward Hayden McLean (who jumped 92cm).

Farrell, a neat-kicking left footer from the Bendigo Pioneers, and Miller, a tall forward from Western Australia, shared the honours in the agility test by running 8.10 seconds.

Another Bendigo pocket rocket Brent Daniels performed well with his sharp movement to run the agility test over 8.11 seconds.
