I'm not sure they do have to give votes every week. Wiki seems to suggest the coaches can just not give votes if they want.

"The voting system as of the 2017 AFL season, consists of five coaches giving an undetermined number of players a ranking from zero to five after each match. Players can receive a maximum of 25 votes for a game.[1]"

I'm not sure how you interpreted it the way you have. I think a decision that all 5 coaches would vote for nobody would be extremely unlikely.

It's disingenuous to keep bringing up that he was just the best out of a very weak team.

He was ranked high in the coaches award. Meaning he was not just competing with his own team, but with all players in the league. And he did pretty well.
