WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

It won't. Harry out means either Blitz back or DeKoning playing which I’m not certain he's ready for. We'll lose a lot of ruck flexibility
Don’t forget Krueger who has a mature body and now Cameron is coming is really a backline option. I think they may run with He do for one more ( great season Hendo), with Krueger replacing Harry until SDK is ready with his body and development, then he comes in for Hendo. Definitely SDK can ruck as well in time. But Krueger coming for Harry would mean Blitz still up the field. Mind you Balta was scary last night what he did to our ducks in the 3rd quarter - he destroyed us.

Would retire Steven, Touhy, Ablett and Taylor.

Keep Henderson as back up.

I've had a rethink and now believe we need a good ball user like Witherden to come in.

Get games into DeKoning and Kreuger as key defenders and try and rebuild a slow and under skilled back half.

I’d trade Kolo. Him and Henry in the same team doesn’t work. Need more run like the Tigers have with Short and Houli. Clark needs to play.

It will be interesting to see what they do next year on the assumption Harry retires, whether they use SDK and keep the same structure or play Kolo tall. Seeing Kolo out marked by Motlop and Henry out marked by Castagna in the finals is pretty galling. If you are giving up run and carry and disposal skill to play both that just can't happen.

PArtner and I thought exactly the same (without mentioning it to each other), but feel it is a lack of skill, composure, and pace, not of will. We had players who were injured and showed incredible courage to play on.

Selwood had the same look on his face that Harley did towards the end of the 2009 grand final. I would not be at all surprised if he retired, unless he has an injury (other than the finger) that we don't know about. We need a couple of classy mids, who we should be looking for in the draft not the trade.

It's not baby and bathwater time, but it is clear we cannot beat Richmond with the current group of players. But we're better than 16 other teams ...
Did Harley really look that upset at the end of a winning GF?

Exactly. I’m not sure SDK will be ready next year. I assume Henderson gets another year whilst he puts on some size. Either way though we need a re-tweeting of that back six.

That btw, wasn’t the primary reason we lost last night. It was having our midfield dominance of the first half reversed. Dangerfield ineffectual, Guthrie going quiet, Selwood making a couple of critical errors. And having no effective forward options. Hawkins struggled and Rohan had one of his poor ones. When he hits the scoreboard we win. Always. He didn’t.

Wouldn't be surprised if Taylor attempts to play on. Would be dissappointed if the club allowed it.

I hope not. He battled well to spoil Lynch but offered nothing else. His disposal is now a complete liability. Has no movement at ground level. It’s time.

Yup this.
Been an amazing warrior and a Champion player and deserves to go out on his own terms, but he probably should be told his terms are now.

I agree. I think It's time.
But I get the feeling they are quite happy with how they used Blicavs this year.
If Blicavs goes back and Cameron comes in who is our second ruck, or who do we have to replace Taylor if not Blicavs etc
This is what they will be weighing up.

Sav as second tall/backup ruck.
Play a taller forward setup of Hawkins, Sav, Cameron, Danger, Rohan, Miers and Close.
Play a longer kicking contested type of system to move the ball into that forwardline quickly and to advantage, do away with the "perfect" style as you simply cannot play perfect football often enough or for long enough to succeed with it.
Stanley rucks the majority of the game (and FFS get his fitness to the point he can), Blicavs takes def 50 ruck jobs, Hawkins the forward 50.

People who don’t want Higgins
He is an upgrade on Simpson, Dahlhaus, Rohan, Ablett on last nights performance.
Yes Ablett got injured and yes Rohan played a important team role

But how many times did they just walk out of contests around the footy in our back line
He provides a better contest then all of them. Plus his foot skills are twice the level of them “except Ablett”

I for one am I big yes on Higgins

Is he that type of player? I always considered him a bit of a 1 way player.
Also, I agree NEXT year he's an upgrade on all of those, my issue is he's 33 and however many games he gets to play for us is games an 18-20 year old could be getting instead.
IF we believe next year we can win the flag, genuinely believe it, and the club has that ruthless mindset to go along with it, then we get Higgins without a doubt and probably try to get Smith aswell.
But if we don't believe we can, we don't.

The next 2 years are all in.
Higgins and Smith
Yes
We need to continue to play Miers and Simpson but continue to develop there bodies
Bring it on

The GF loss is disappointing, but we were beaten by a better side. No shame in that. But we need to learn from it. Obviously we were close and there is a temptation to top up to try again. But I just don’t see that turning the club into a retirement home is going to get us over the line.

Assuming Gaz and Harry retire for starters, I’d like to see us be brave and pay out Jenkins and not offer Henderson a spot on the main list. If this means he moves on, fair enough.

Then I’d tell Higgin and Smith or any other player over 29 that the moment has passed and we cannot fit you in. Happy to pick up Cameron but not at the cost of 2 of our 3 first round picks. It’s the comp pick or the comp pick and a side trade for me. (Didn’t think side deals would get signed off by the AFL but if Adelaide / St Kilda can do it… ) After that it’s off to the draft.

Next year I’d be investing games into younger players, even if that means they are getting games that they might not have earned. Not all at once, but enough to help them develop as quickly as possible.

What is the point of giving up a draft pick, to get 1 or 2 years out of a 33 yr old? Last night we looked old and slow in the second half. Another geriatric on the decline won’t help that.

Until we actually offer a pick I’m not against it
If it’s our pick in the 30’s that will turn into the 40’s I’m not against it
I think the biggest thing for us is keeping our 3 firsts and bringing if Cameron and Higgins without touching them

Seeing Joel finally fall back to the pack has enlightened me on how important his replacement will be.

Our young mids are a supporting cast, love to be proven wrong but that's how I see it. We don't have our A-Grade movie star yet, in this example.

Parfitt - Could be anything, could be nothing. Personally I see a solid second or third string mid who will have moments of brilliance and some great games, but won't ever be that number one that we crave

Fogarty - Much the same just minus some of the polish of Brandan. Handy 3rd of 4th defensive mid who can maybe rest forward. Think Kieren Jack lite.

Stephens - I don't see special personally, if anyone more in the know would like to enlighten me on him feel free, but I don't see the 'It' factor. Seems like a great kid and will get every last drop of potential out of himself, but I don't see number one mid here. Love to be proven wrong. That being said, he's a good looking dude and poster boy potential if he ends up any good.

Narkle - Who knows, flashes of brilliance mixed with complete absence from games. If reports are correct he's out the door, but I back our club to make the right decision on this one. Rare that these ones have come back to bite us, Cocky in the same boat.

Constable - Is he GHS or is he Patrick Cripps? Probably somewhere in the middle, closer to the former than the latter. I like Charlie, but until he fixes his endurance which the club has made clear is what's holding him back, I don't see a future for him. Can find the ball seemingly at will which you can't teach, but unfortunately that's not everything. If he's out the door I back the club that they've got it right.

Simpson - Love this kid and the way he goes about it, but he's the icing not the cake. Classy, tough, bit of polish, but you want him receiving the ball and delivering, not getting it at the coal face.

For me, whether it be through trading up or hoping for a slider/Smokey, a future number one mid is a must.

Bruhn or Phillips from the upcoming draft would be worth a crack. We'd need to trade up into the top 6/7/8 or so, but I think it's possible. That's why it's important we land Cameron as a FA and hold our draft capital.
