Cooper Stephens another player who has only played a hand full of games in last 2 years. Unknow if he is going to be any good yet why does he use our first picks on guys who where injured all the time....Who was our last under 20 first picked that was not injured?

no no no he was not our first pick was he? lol
He was our second pick last year, but he was selected at pick 19 and you asked about draftees taken under pick 20

What about Clark in 2018 - did he have any issues during his draft season? I can remember something about glandular fever but I though that was closer to draft time & not something that impacted his football that year

Thurlow was taken in 2012 - not sure on his draft year, nor Menzel in his draft year

Don't think Taylor taken in 2007 had any injury history

We haven't really taken too many early selections over the past decade - a lot of our 1st round picks have been later, so maybe that's why there's been bit of a reach with some compared to if we had a series of top 10 picks

No go read i said under 20 first picked and i just put Clark in as you posted this Thurlow was he fell on bike track, so maybe it was Menzel

It’s a star league. I think it’s now crystal clear that Wells is going to be using highish picks on players that’s have untapped potential and ultra high ceilings. He is also a value investor which is dictated by the range we pick at.

I mean we somehow draft a top 10 player in the league and this run continues. To do that you need to take risks. He then slots in solid role players after pick 30.

Clark was sick and playing cricket, Holmes a freak runner who barely played, Stephens broke a leg, Lang the same, Cocky an athletic freak who was inj, Selwood inj, Mitch Brown inj, Smedts and Menzel where plucked on their high ceiling.

All those guys were sort of boom or bust selections.

I believe he was injured most of the year.
then dont play him....I know there are some things players can play thru but ffs he certainly didnt set the world on fire - and I dont want to gift games to anyone, but if Dahl was hurt are we certain Close, Atkins, Fog, Tarca, Kennerly, even Stevens would have been any worse given what he was allegedly carrying?

Go Catters

Wasn't Thurlow coming off being smashed up after a run-in with a bike track at a ground, head and face injuries?

Agreed.
Blame the club.
I am sure I read this somewhere.

Is it likely we might go for Z Merrett in FA? Assuming Selwood retires end of 2021. I guess it might depend if a midfielder can step up, and command extra $.

Id say we will enquire..but as will others. Collingwood very keen apparently. I do feel there is a domino affect in the way we have maintained and added to the list. If are successful in 2021 then there will be players who want to come. Not successful, in the. competitive effort up the top somewhere , deluded supporters Colin Carter successfull ... I mean we go as well as we did in 2020. No easy task.

At lot probably depends on JS..if and when he decided to go ..then we will have money to spend.

Honestly Id rather play kids than him anyway but other like him more than I. His age and experience he should be a mid.. but he was brought in for a reason.

Why play him injured? Some players can carry injury , usually it depends on the injury. Was he was performing to a required level or not. If not ..then I 100% agree. Not Dalh biggest fan. Imagine if Tarca go a game or two at some stage and kicked a goal or two..it might have changed his situation.

We must not fall for the same card trick in 2021. Three on your list are gone. Stephens needs a way in , he is our future.

Your criteria is unnecessarily strict. No team in the top 4 this year even had a natural first selection in the top 20 to begin with. There's also no reason to discount SDK. He's a selection inside the top 20 even though he wasn't the first called. Clark got a full year of footy out too, so 2 out of the 4 1st rounders we've recently selected had full years of u18s.

Essendon will match to force a trade and don't see the valuations between Essendon and the Cats aligning much. Don't think we'd go for it. Retain the dons second, pick up best available mid.

So the only knock on Wells is why does he keep doing it year after year, he is lucky he does well with late picks

Pretty ridiculous comment, to be honest. Wells drafts the best player at our pick. If they've had an injury then obviously he, and the club, believes it won't impact the player's career. Thurlow getting slammed into a bike track didn't impact his career, Selwood's knee didn't impact his. You're also saying Wells does it "year after year", he's done it four times in the past ten drafts (Stephens, Cockatoo, Lang, Thurlow). Hardly a pattern.

He also took Fogarty, TK, SDK, and Parfitt with relatively early picks in that time who each had no injury history.

There's no rush with Stephens. I didn't hear much about him out of the scratch matches this year, so it's probably reasonable to assume he needs more time.

Going by the noise out of the club, it's more likely we'll see Evans, SDK and Jarvis. At least it seems we have some really solid depth coming through now.

Stephens was fit all year. Hardly his fault there was no VFL. He got a very solid grounding in this year.

Not sure if this has been mentioned- but after watching the interviews with Cameron, Higgins and Smith, it’s not just highly skilled players we get - but highly confident ones too. Cameron is a superstar and is so humble, however Smith and Higgins give off the vibe that Scarlett and Mackie gave, almost arrogant in their self belief - which I really like. Higgins in not so many words back himself to be better than GAJ going forward, and Smith (when asked if he’s here to win another premiership) replied “hopefully more than one”...

Players like that don’t drop their heads when it’s tough. They back themselves.

I’m definitely looking forward to 2021 and seeing these three slot into our team. They’ll upgrade our skills significantly and add experience like no other.

Interest article by Cal on the draft

North, Haw, and WCE all offered F2nds to Richmond for pick 20. slightly less than our offer especially Nths offer. Rich wanted Collingwoods F1st but they said no meaning ours was slightly the best offer on the table. Bottom line was there was plenty of competition for it so it was market value

The lengthy article on the draft first round didn’t mention one other single club interested in Holmes even with picks in the early 20s. Even Angwin who was a shock at 18 was mentioned as going to Melb forcing the Giants to pick him there. I’d love to know where the Cats had him ranked. You would assume inside the top 12 to spend that capital.

Mentioned clubs deliberately not interviewing players these days as a tactic.

But at that level, that's almost what you'd expect right? They've been top of the tree their entire junior careers, they'd all have pretty strong egos about their ability.

He could have played a game or two , certainly was more prepared than Jarvis or MOC in their first game. So for 2021 we do need to find a way to ensure he debuts..

Everyone thinks there is plenty of time Im sure kennerly thought things looked bright 12 months ago.
