And we all should know by now that if history repeats Wells isn’t reading out any names mentioned in here.

This is a bit of a myth. Yes, we do pluck one or two out of nowhere every now and again (Holmes, Evans) but the vast majority of our draftees are selected in their predicted range.

Wells went through a period with the likes of Lang and Thurlow being taken earlier than expected which both ended up as busts. He’s been far more “conventional” in recent years which may be just a recognition that the consensus order is relatively stable amongst the first 20 or so picks taken nowadays.

Was it Mackie that started that around Wells or is there another before him I'm forgetting? I remember people complaining he'd picked some skinny kid from nowhere on talk back.

GEELONG CATS

Draft picks (as of October 21):
22, 30, 32, 34, 50

The list needs they must address: The Cats may have an experienced list, but there’s a few holes to plug. A midfielder that specialises at stoppages for the long term would be handy, considering five of the Cats’ top six clearance winners this year were Patrick Dangerfield (31 years old), Joel Selwood (33), Cam Guthrie (29), Mitch Duncan (30) and Sam Menegola (29). The retirement of Lachie Henderson, departure of Nathan Kreuger to Collingwood and inability to land Daniel Talia has also left the Cats thin in the key defensive stocks, especially after they ranked 16th for intercept marks this year. The Cats could also do with a pressure forward – they ranked 14th in the all-important stat of forward-half intercepts this year – but that doesn’t seem as pressing a need as 2020 draftees Francis Evans and Max Holmes could fill that chasm.

The ideal draft prospects: There’s a slight chance South Adelaide midfielder Matthew Roberts, who played several SANFL league games this year, slips to Geelong’s first selection. But the pick could also line up with where Sam Butler sits on draft boards. A shrewd player with great strength at the contest, Butler — the brother of premiership Tiger and Saints forward Dan Butler — ranked first for contested possessions (9.2), tackles (4.8) and goals (0.8) among mid-forwards in the NAB League. Not only could he address the Cats’ pressure issue, he could also provide some grunt around stoppages. Midfielders that might be available later in the second round include Calder Cannons gun Zac Taylor, East Fremantle ball magnet Josh Browne, who won this year’s Jack Clarke Medal for WAFL colts best and fairest player, and East Fremantle’s Corey Warner. The romantic selection would be Mitch Knevitt, who won the Geelong Falcons’ best and fairest this year after averaging 24.3 touches. As for intercept defenders, Central District mature-age gun Leek Alleer and Swan Districts big man Rhett Bazzo would be around the mark.
I know absolutely nothing about him but Rhett Bazzo is a name I can get behind.

I'm still really surprised he moved. I guess he really wanted to be a forward (or was worried we'd worried we'd try to recruit Taylor, Harley, and Scarlett as DFAs) because you couldn't be any more guaranteed game time next season than he was with our list profile.
At the time that he would have agreed the move - well before trade period - I think we were still being linked with Talia and Hendo was yet to go.

Yeah I wasn’t necessarily meaning he reaches on too many players, more so every year a handful of kids become BF favs and I can’t remember any of them ever being selected. Gould and Robertson last couple of years were two off the top of my head. I’m pro Wells, he can choose who he likes and I’m on board.

The combination of strong overhead and good endurance is pretty classic, as well as the background (Sacred Heart).

Glenelg, SANFL / Ex. Sacred Heart College
State: South Australia
Height: 183cm
Weight: 69kg
Date of Birth: 14/01/03

Dashing defender who is capable of setting up the play with his penetrating left foot. A one-touch player below the knees, he reads the play exceptionally well, running hard to outnumber the opposition and rebound for this team using his blistering speed. South Australia’s leading possession winner with 25 disposals against Western Australia in the NAB AFL Under-19’s Championships match in August, he played predominantly at under-18s level in the SANFL, averaging 26.7 disposals in 14 matches this year for Glenelg, including 27 in the losing Grand Final side. A back injury kept him out of NAB AFL Draft Combine testing.

Him or Banks should be available later in the draft which dissuades me from using an early pick on Brown.

Im pretty sure he was talking about Luca Whitelum but rayson wouldnt be a bad choice.

I feel like we need someone who has good foot skills with pace - rather than one or the other which we seem to have drafted recently in my opinion. Also, in a weird way we need someone who is 'cocky' - not lazy cocky but cocky in which they know that their skills are good enough because once again in feels like our young players just don't have that like a Gulden or Bailey Smith, for example. (I know they were higher picks in general but these are just my thoughts)

Got a couple of SA relo’s who are super keen on Roberts. Not sure he’s a type we generally select but sounds promising, if he’s available that is.

Yep... that's exactly what i was thinking.
Wouldn't surprise me if Wells called out...
Cooper Beecken, Kai Lohmann, Bailey Rogers, Cooper Murley and Ronnie Frejo Jnr.
and we'll all sit back and say... Fook!! Didnt see any of that coming... LOL

Nobody's mentioned Jimmy Slapcabbage around here for a while, either...

Fair enough, stats look much better.

But I’d love to see some vision of knevitt. It’s how they use the footy and athletic traits on field. Not disagreeing with you, he might be completely different to Constable.. but until I see his style I don’t know for sure. Maybe after Jansen, Constable I’m unfair on this kid.

To me, Impact per possession is the most important thing to look for when assessing draft prospects. Class, a spark. Fitness can be trained, class can’t.

Hopefully the afl website releases more vision
Performs under pressure, good right foot

Henderson was gone by the time he was traded and Talia was only ever a media thing.

Shifter Sheahan listed his medium defenders today. The Tassie kid, Sam Banks, sounds good, as do Beecken, Wilmot and 2 or 3 others.

Given our draft position we'll be selecting some unfamiliar names unless we trade up. The focus on the same 20-25 players pre-draft is in some ways a distraction.

Mathew Roberts, mentioned above, is apparently slow, albeit he's had an injury, but a great kick.

We must focus on quick, competitive lads who are good ball-users. Josh Fahey is an example but I suspect he'll go too early. I'm in 2 minds about Knevitt because of the query on his kicking and we've had bad luck with Falcons in recent years.

By the time he was traded is very different to by the time he agreed to move
Not necessarily. If it was a material consideration in his decision he could wait right up until the Henderson position was clear.

I’ll go with the answer staring us in the face: Pies offered him more money, an extra year and the option of playing in his preferred position. When you view it like that it’s not hard to see why he jumped.

I saw we were able to select Arlo Draper at our first pick on the mock BF draft. Would he be a realistic chance of being there on draft night?

Would be very surprising to see him slip past 18.
Would be a great get, but seems to be pretty well entrenched in the top dozen or so.

That snap from the boundary was a bit special, 1st time I've seen him.

The little tape i have seen him he looks like hes got some talent..obviously pretty raw and more a rookie pick but could be value there. That gamewinning goal was a gem.
