We did exactly that with Ottens, though. The rest of the team, yes, it was pretty much through astute drafting and development.

I would hazard a guess that we'd be outright premiership favourites if we had Darcy in our side with his current form.

Without Ottens? We may not have won one, perhaps even two, of the three flags. We'd almost certainly have won in 2013 if Ottens was still around.

I see Darcy as potentially being an Ottens. The only problem is, he has to want to come to us and we'd have to be prepared to pay very handsomely.
I'm pretty sure we recruited Ottens as a forward and initially tried him there same as Richmond. When that didn't work we put him in the ruck and we all know the result. Does anyone else remember it this way?

Its more about where would Cerra , Clark and Narkle pick to play. Id be surprised if it all neatly fell together.

Cerra would be best 22 in our side easily. But he will want more $ than we will be willing to offer. Carlton or essendon for him i think.

Clark's lack of bulk on the upper body may have been hampered by the elbow injury in his first season and then the shoulder dislocation last year

Not sure what sort of program he's been on during the off-season in terms of things like gym and preparing for the next season versus recovery from the previous one
I would agree. Hard to bulk up the upper body when you have done pretty damaging shoulder and elbow injuries. Next year will be more telling.

He will not want to play for Geelong imo. Rich have picks to get it done. Ess probably have cap room... but I agree he would jump the cue.

Does anybody know what’s wrong with Clarke? Hasn’t come on, hasn’t bulked up, not up to it?

confidence completely shot by being played out if position, dropped, sub, brought in, sub etc.

the flair and confidence coached out of him and never getting a run in. Injuries in his first and second years didn’t help. Was an absolute gun year 1, and we’ve mucked his rhythm. Only a string of games in the 1s or string in the 2s with a reward of a string of games in the ones, in his preferred hbf quarterback role will help (mind you there’s no vfl at the minute).

would certainly not trade without a ridiculous offer. This is one player that’d dominate outside of Geelong if we trade, due to renewed confidence playing consistently, and we’d have supporters scratching their heads “how did that happen?”. Not me. It’s obvious. Play the guy in defence, promise 6 games in the 1s no matter what and watch the kid flourish. He is our most talented youngster.

I would find it hard to imagine he would've done a worse job on Rozee than Zach Tuohy. Thats one change I'd like to see made.

No doubt Tuohy had a shocker, but I think he's been pretty reasonable this season.

That said, I just posted in the Narkle thread and I think Clark could be another player who's "collateral damage" from our all-or-nothing approach to winning 2021 or 2022. If it ends up we lose both Clark AND Narkle, I hope we can get something decent for both.

Yep, that's how I remember it. We were looking for a key forward for years.

He's been very soft when he's played this year. Though, my big question mark is whether he has the right attitude. Last year in just his second season he admitted to cracking the sooks. If he's not willing to work hard and force his way in, will he ever have the right attitude to reach his potential?

Clark was moved out of a defensive role 6 games into his first season, and played the vast majority of his first year as a midfielder and predominately on the wing

He's had the odd game playing off the half back line since and in those games he's shown why they moved him in the first place as his defensive accountability and nous is lacking in comparison to the other options we have available to play those roles

Playing on the wing doesn't take away his attacking flair or ability to tuck the ball under the arm & go for a run - if anything it better allows him to show that side of his game without having to bring as stronger defensive mindset to the role in comparison to actually playing on defence

IMHO the 'problem' is twofold:

1. He is not an inside mid or forward and his best role looks like an outside rebounding/wing role. Which means that in the GFC world he is automatically behind Duncan, Menegola, Smith, Higgins and Tuohy who all in different ways cover that role.

2. Geelong just fundamentally is not prepared to persist with senior games for obviously talented youngsters when they can just use 'old faithful' senior players who will give predictable, if limited, service.

IMHO this year so far Duncan and Smith from the above list should be in every week but Menegola, Higgins and Tuohy could all have been rotated out at different times to keep getting games into Clark.

It's like everyone at the club has been zapped with that memory-wipe thing from Men in Black and they no longer remember the years it took to get the 2007 team up to that level. I'm sure many here will remember how Enright couldn't kick, Ling was too slow, Ablett didn't put in the required workrate and so on. But they all had time to develop.

Leave me out of mids that go 2:1 UCP to CP yet don't kick goals or set them up. Mitch Duncan much more damaging and I wouldn't consider him A grade either.
Mitch Duncan is obviously A grade and a better player this year than Selwood or Dangerfield. In fact, when conscious, he's arguably our best midfielder alongside Guthrie.

Beautiful.

One you did not mention which I think is applicable is Mackie. We seem to want all players to be strong atm but Mackie became the player despite his body shape.

Yeah look, you could keep going. Mackie too skinny, Johnson too daft, Chapman too bald, Mooney too angry, Rooke and Corey too awesome, etc.
