I dont think freo will let him go but if they would he would cost a lot in a trade but he would be well worth it.
Darcy come out and said he did not want to come home so i don't think we have a chance

lol, short term that would still improve our team. Getting Darcy would be huge, probably bigger than getting JC.
Rumour is that the Pies may give CS a big offer, could go the other way!

Something is helping good teams stay good and bad teams stay bad despite draft and salary cap.
The thing it gets back to for me is that performance is a function of context/purpose and leadership. You need leaders to prove clear objectives and roles to players and to be able to clearly articulate why that purpose is important. If you're chucking kids into a leadership and structure vacuum, you're gonna have a bad time

I hope not.
Stanley or Fort, with backup from Blitz is our best ruck combo.
I like him, but Sav is not a ruck, and atm he is no better than gap filler on the ground.
Stanley is 31 in Dec, mature but would seems he is still as redoubtable as he has ever been. Yet we have dropped him and we have not gone wth Stanley or Fort. Stanley is OOC , I cant see why you would keep both as backups.

Yeah, makes sense. Talking leadership and structure vacuums, I always think of the Demons post-Bailey clean-out as a prime example of what not to do. Got rid of too many senior players and combined with a new coach, it was a disaster.

We just need to be (somewhat) reasonable in expectation. To be fair to Freo, they shouldn't give up Darcy easy, they know he's about to hit his prime. So what's reasonable? Clark? We are tight on picks, and we to continue to invest in the draft. Also, it would not surprise me if we aren't sniffing around Merrett. Only room for so many good catches!

We are not tight on picks we have a future 1st and 3 2nds. Look we do need to invest in the draft but ruck is the hardest position to draft and weve failed at it for 10 years and good young rucks carry trade value. Freo will probably want clark and a future 1st (thats if they are even willing to trade darcy at all) and id pay that but i get why some geelong supporters wouldnt.

I feel like a big trade for Darcy either wins is the flag next year or is actively damaging.
If we give up Clark and a first and we smash sides in the clearances next year sending it a now well gelled and elite f50 sure.
If there's a bad run of injuries, or his knee blows up again, followed by a cohort retirements then Clark and 1st would be handy and we'd have time to develop Tsapatolis or Neale or SDK anyway.

Trading for Darcy is not just about the next season. He’s 22 if he was traded in he could be our ruck for 10 years. I’m sure he will have some injuries in that time. But unless they are career threatening it’s not that big a risk. Tsapatolis and Neale are a long way off playing AFL.

If Geelong finally go in big for a ruckman a year AFTER finally drafting an 18 year old ruck for the first time in 10 or so years, I will scream tbh. Not that that makes it the wrong move. But doing either one of those things years earlier...

I agree that trading a lot for any top shelf ruck (darcy is my no1 choice but hes not the only option) will either be the missing piece that wins us a flag next year or if they get injured long term we will regret the trade. But thats a risk with any high price trade as it would be with cameron etc. I think where our list is at its a risk worth taking-i honestly think if darcy was on our list now we would win the flag this year.

GEELONG MISSES ON FATHER-SON GUN
NO CLUB has benefited from the father-son rule quite like Geelong, but the Cats' luck has evaded them this season.
Tom Brown, a versatile defender from the Murray Bushrangers who some recruiters view as a possible top-20 pick, is the son of former Cat Paul Brown.
However, Brown played 84 games for the Cats, just short of the 100-game mark needed to have his son be eligible to join the blue and white hoops. Brown played in Geelong's 1994-95 Grand Final losses and was known for his versatility before a serious knee injury cut short his career.
Brown's premature end will see the Cats miss out on his son, although his daughter Millie (Tom's sister) joined the club's AFLW side under the father-daughter rule at the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft.
An ankle injury has sidelined Tom for several weeks and is likely to see him miss at least another handful of games, however his start to the season was eye-catching, including a strong performance for the Bushrangers in round three with 21 disposals and seven marks before finding 22 touches and five rebounds in round four.

The 186cm and 77kg prospect also excelled at the NAB League testing earlier this season, finishing in the top 10 for the vertical jump, running jump and agility tests, with his speed also catching the eye.
"He's still another couple of weeks off resuming but he's had an outstanding start," Bushrangers talent manager Mick Wilson said.
"He came back in the pre-season as well as anyone and he really does look like an A-grader. He looks comfortable across half-back but he's shown he can play forward too. He's pretty versatile."
The Cats, who count Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett and Tom Hawkins among their father-son successes, won't get any priority call on Brown but do have access to Darby Scott (son of Robert) and Will Kilpatrick (son of Glenn) this season. – Callum Twomey

I posted about Brown earlier in this thread. It's a shame he doesn't qualify because he has some tricks.
The irony I think Freo , at its stage of development may not miss Darcy too much, they have a chance to "Kelly" us.
When you go for a period without draft or drafting without development then you have to attempt to pay the price. We lack that 21-24 year old. So Darcy hits the spot.. Not sure on that knee bandage or if his shape and mobility is what we like but the way we are leveraged means we probably do not want to wait... and so we are probably prepared to pay overs.
Possible parts of a deal ...Clark, Narkle, Neale, Fr1, 3*Fr2 .... I think we have enough to get something done and for them to walk away saying they had an obvious win. All parts of a potential deal, and potential it can hurt bad or hardly at all. I look back now to the Ottens trade. Its still probably our most expensive trade, yet the theme of Yabby Jeans and his shoes holds. He was worth it over and over , and the outcome of those picks did little for Rich. Moloney was reasonable for Melb but did us losing him hurt us? We could have traded Tenace instead of him. Would that have hurt us. I have no doubt that the only way someone like Darcy is at Geelong next year is we come away with our pockets picked.
The alternative is to persist with what we have and add a younger version of Stanley , perhaps cover us again for 2-3 years. What are Rich going to do, one gets the feeling tehy will not be able to fit them all in.
We have 2 or 3 good looking chances on the list atm, and 2-5 years time we will know if we have a ruck. We may have a forward and back and NG , and still have no ruck , but at least now we have tried to go for some kids again, and Id hope no matter what we do, next year we add another tall. Other clubs have consistently held more drafted ruck types on their list. WC seem to have done it well imo. Drafted and traded in. They had Nic Nac but still won a flag due to them having a usable backup.
I wonder if the mid season draft will continue to alter the way clubs draft. Do clubs hold a spot open and then draft a ruck on need with another half a seasons development in them.
