AFL Rich 100 2021: Joel Selwood’s insane sacrifice to secure Cameron trade
Joel Selwood is already regarded as one of the Cats’ greatest players and most influential leaders, but what he did to land the Jeremy Cameron deal goes above it all.


Inspirational Geelong captain Joel Selwood has made a six-figure sacrifice in the final years of his contract to help the Cats land superstar free agent Jeremy Cameron.
The star onballer remains one of the Cats’ most important players but is on a modest contract worth about $550,000 this year to help Geelong balance its books.

Significantly, Selwood’s deal has helped give Geelong enough room to land Cameron who was the biggest free agency signing in the game last year.

Cameron, who has made an excellent start to the season after hamstring setbacks, signed a six-year contract to help spearhead Geelong in its quest for a fourth flag since 2007.

The Coleman medallist could be the difference to a side which fell short to Richmond in last year’s decider as the Dustin Martin-inspired Tigers clinched back-to-back pennants.

I would throw the kitchen sink at him, kolo, narkle and a pick for him, he's a falcons boy get him home.

Also a ruck is a must, I'd be looking at ladhams or Cameron from the pies as ready made players

Let's face it, offering them Kolo, Parfitt and a first-rounder next year (that we'd have to somehow cobble together from existing picks or a trade) would hardly be seen as throwing the kitchen sink at him at this point.

Totally agree. Can't see him leaving at all. They'll be able to offer bigger money and a longer deal, almost undoubtedly. And, whether you think they're actually 'coming' or not, the media vibe is certainly building for them. Easy sell to tell him to get on board the awakening juggernaut.

2015 draft. Not 8 years. The question is not about kicthen sinks or any other farms or any other amount. Is Darcy happy..then he will stay.

How many spots will we have I wonder?

I suspect we look at FA type of guys who have slipped because others have come in over the top of them

Unless its a premium mid type like Hopper , I think the only player we serious trade for is a ruck.. lets go to draft for the rest. Of course if the right player scream I want in you do what you can but ..we have to look at a few area that we need to address.

Just OOCis Parish. He would cost way more than kolo etc youre looking at 2 R1s or equivalent.

I like Cameron but Pies need talls so if he is happy to play fwd he will stay. Probably only moves if he wants to be a primary ruck elsewhere.
Same with Ladhams wont be no1 ruck at Port but as an SA boy he might be hard to move but we should try.

It’ll be interesting to see how long Parish signs for. If he only signs for 2 years I’m pretty sure that’d bring him to a free agent. Darcy has just signed to extend his contract to free agency.
Could be a few options for when some of our stars retire.

He was pick 38 in the 2016 draft. We used our first (which was a traded pick with the Henderson trade) on Parfitt. Took Tom Stewart at pick 40. So we really didn’t have the opportunity to take him other than with our first which would have been a reach at the time.

I reckon there will be a huge role for him post retirement that will balance it back. But good on him, great leadership.

In 2 years time he will be in the top 2 ruckman.. people say his to big, to slow, but he gets himself in the right spots, as he would know himself he wont be fast, but he knows his limitations... beast

Still wouldn't be remotely the same. We only had one shot at Darcy with a live pick before Freo drafted him.

West Coast took 17 players across three drafts and still hadn't called Kelly's name.
