Do we really need another monster KPD? DeKoning is capable of playing on the no.1 forwards and it’s rare that a team has two massive big guys in the forward 50 these days. I thought our balance in def 50 was terrific this year with Henry taking the second tall and Stewart and Z.Guthrie being the interceptors. None of these guys are 30 yet. I just can’t see the need atm.

We do need to get another young guy to develop and for depth. But I’m struggling to see, unless someone gets injured, how someone like McKay gets a game for us?

Mckay or someone like that would free up henry and stewart in particular to be interceptors full time which they excel at. It would also give us depth as if a kpd gets injured or loses form we have none in the 2s to bring in. So while i wouldnt overpay for a kpd compared to a kpf its definitely a list need imo.

A couple of points.
Next years draft is a better pool so say 14 this year and 14 next year is arguably better than 7 this year.
On retirements id say ceglar is certain..stanley rohan smith tuohy hawkins are all reasonable chances to retire..menegola will be 31 and FA so i can see him going too.
Simpson and sav are good chances to go next year and the neale WA risk is there.
So i can see us turning over 6-8 spots easily next year-we will either be moving players to bring in picks or hitting FA hard as we wont be taking 4 players in the 5th round i dont think.

Or only some of that will happen.
Next year’s draft is always said to be better. This year was supposed to be good for talls. Did they shrink?
The club traded out futures 2,3 and 4 so they can’t be too worried about it.

1000% yes.

Its that simple.

Granted - you dont replace Tomma...

But - for one to take his vacated position, I feel Neale is the best asset to do so.

202, great kicking technique, good but not great hands. Reads the ball and play well. Very mobile for size. Can ruck if needed but not his 1 wood. Good hands and good 2/3 efforts on the ground.

Keep SDK at FB and have Neale at FF with Jezza at CHF.

The issue for me is getting enough games into Neale WITH Tomma still playing.

Would be the most likely deals so we would only go back a few spots.

It's quite tempting anyway given our hand next year.

The only problem is Busslinger will be gone at 12 I'd say.

He may do but I don't think him not signing on long term is a big deal. He has no exposed form so has no basis for contract negotiations.

It would only happen if WCE were convinced we might take one of the kids they want... But we are willing to drop back from 7 to 8, it's pretty obvious to them that we don't.

So I don't see it happening.

12 + 20 for 7 would be more like it, as WCE would 100% know they can get two WA targets back to back without someone swooping before 12 on possibly a Busslinger.

Of course, we would need to be confident that someone we wanted would be available at 12 and have a couple in mind for 20.

All depends on how bad we want whoever is on the table when #7 (#8) comes around on draft night.

The club will know... We just speculate to pass the time.

Curious as to the reasoning.

I think its a real risk losing him - the 1 year deal is a show me deal for sure -
IMO he wants more games and thats fair and he wnats more $$ - both reasonable. And we need to play him. I think the 1 yr was to enable him to get GFC attention and say ill stick fat for 2023 but show me as well.

Its smart by him and his management.

Hope it plays out our way. Needs games.

Thats the issue with our competitions size and the money it generates. In soccer there are so many top quality young players with a high ceiling, some hit it, some don't, but in a world wide code if a club comes and takes your player, and they pay out 500k to 3m for taking him, and you can use that to buy another quality young player who is similar.

If Daicos was the clear #1 of his draft year, and the Pies got him from North uncontracted after a year, and they paid them the value of that first years contract, that doesn't help North because theres no back up. They just lose a gun young player and have no one to fill the void. And the money paid really doesn't help them.

They are going to need to come up with a really unique way to solve this issue because other sports have the cash and the luxury of player numbers.

Out of interest ..how do the decide 500 and how do the decide 3m ... if all have the right to move in soccer? Contract size?

I do agree that they must find something that works for australia and our code.... Soccer system is theirs and every sport is different. NRL has no draft in australia... do they have a fairer system? Is it more sustainable because players are not just told where to go? Im not sure.... they have very parochial comp compared to us. Whether we come up with a artificial value like the FA comp or some other method of compensation ... , someone like Dunkley OOC should have been able to control his destiny. One might argue about Henry and Bruhn ,. that they had not done much for the comp yet but Dunkley has contributed to the comp long enough to control his own destination imo.

As far players being likely to go to one side more than others. Hard to change preferences but it happens.Geelong was once not a destination club. Can StKIld etc find somethinbg that makes them an indentity. What deos Gold Coast offer. Maybe Geelong are lucky being the only provincial club... and if they works for us..long may it be so... because for years it worked against us.

We all know that trying to discern quality arross drafts and years is difficult. 12 months out ..we have ofter heard the next draft is this or that.

So judgement of the next draft is critical. Pick the right kid with the late pick and you look brilliant. If we trade down and into next year (for getting who for the moment). ... if we did that and have a draft haul like 2019 and 2020 ...we would look like drafting gurus. ie. ... Trade 7 out for a Holmes and a San Dek ...

Trade down 7 , miss on a Selwood type 7 ... for a Thurlow and a Lang and not so brilliant.

So its their choice and on their head be it. Go's with the job. What is not deniable. Next year we will have more retirements. Two early picks next would be ideal to have.

In my head I think we want Clark and I feel we are 50/50 to get him.

If we didn't snag Clark I'd be happy with Humprey as a De Goey/Heeney type powerful mid-forward.

Humprey is probably my preference but I think he will be gone anyway, making it a moot point.

There's just something more exciting about getting a mid that has power, height, aerial, and goal-kicking ability that can pay off big time.

Phillipou looks like he ticks those boxes with Humprey... So I guess I'll be happy with either Phillipou or Humprey if we miss on the traditional solid mid that is Clark.

Humprey and Phillipou just excite me more than McKenzie... But in the end, I know nothing compared to our recruiters.

One thing is for sure... Having Pick #7 after winning the flag and bringing in Bruhn, Henry + Bowes (and keep our F1) is just stupid good.

Next season we will have a very long list of players legitimately aspiring for AFL selection before we even add pick 7/8 - I think someone made this point above. Very careful management of this situation will be required - at least you would think so.

Accordingly I'd split the pick, if it yielded a likely early first-rounder next year. It will depend a lot on whether or not Wells et al believe pick, say, 14 would deliver a player they really like of the type the club is going to need. Whether this is the case I have no idea and perhaps no-one does given Wells's sometimes quixotic selection history.

GWS no chance for the spoon next year, the bottom clubs will be putrid.

I’m not sure sure they go backwards either, their team line up may actually resemble some sort of structure, instead of the ten inside mids they had plugged all over the ground in recent years.

What I'm getting at is that their F1 should be a pretty early selection.

Don’t get all the concern about future retirements, by the time they all go the young bucks will be in their prime and I reckon there’s about a dozen of them. Selwood hard to replace yes but he wasn’t the player he was which makes it easier. Hawkins, Danger, Cameron and Blitz will be the toughest to replace but they’ve all got good footy left in them for a while IMO.

Smith, Duncan, Tuohy, Stanley, Rohan, Bews, Guthrie and Menegola will be just a blip as good as they’ve all been. They will be replaced organically thru the draft before it’s compromised and with free agency no doubt.

That’s 3 a year, a dozen spread over possibly 4 years. This trade period has made it that much easier. #7 and hopefully Conor McKenna (the quietness around him has me thinking he’s already on board) will only add to that.

Nor am I, don’t think he’ll be the next coming of Bontompelli but looks to have plenty of upside and offers a point of difference.

Projecting 3 years into our system though I could see why Wells might.
