As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Yes.

I've been calling out for some small defenders with speed.
That can defend and give options .

Teams like pies,Saints etc.
Have too many for our taller and slower ones to cover.

bews getting on.
Exactly. We severely lack speed in our back half.

There seems to be an idea at the club that to be a defender you must be 6'3" and slow. No wonder we give up so many goals to the likes of Cameron (Charlie), Papley, Weightman, Pickett and the likes.

Hopefully Mulin can delvelop quickly or at the very least MOC gets moved back down back with a better midfield next year

Why can't Merrick tag each week.,?
Last 2 weeks josh D and Hill getting to much of it ..

They don't need to be, it's the flow on affect as much as anything.

Atkins gets far less attention, so do Bruhn, Holmes & Knevitt after another pre-season. Guthrie comes back and doesn't have to play the saviour role, Danger gets to pick & choose games as he's rested for when it matters etc
I think this is where M Crouch could play a role too, especially if we can get him for virtually nothing. Crouch, Guthrie back, Blicavs fit, Atkins doing what he does and Bruhn with another preseason under his belt would give us a lot of grunt at the coalface, which allows Danger to manage his body much better without having to carry the midfield on his back. I reckon an injury-free Danger who only plays 14-16 games and spends ~40% of his time forward when he does play could be an absolute weapon come finals time next year. Like he was at the pointy end of 2022.

And with some more mid options I'd have Holmes back out on a wing where he belongs. He's at his best when he can get into space, not under a pack.

I think the problem is that we have TOO MANY in his range: 6'2" to 6'4" and not particularly quick. Kolo, Stewart, Henry, Tuohy, Zuthrie. Our defence is one-sized and one-paced. Not tall enough to go with the true tall forwards, and the small forwards just run rings around them.

Henry & Stewart get away with it more than the others because they are very good in the air for their height, and Stewart in particular reads the play so brilliantly. But with those two in there, we just don't need three more of similar height and lacking speed.

I think that's why Mullin is getting promoted into the AFL side ahead of his time - because he's genuinely quick and could develop into the pacy small defender we so desperately need. Same with Ratugolea - genuine KP height and a realistic option for Curnow / McKay / King / King / Daniher / Dixon / etc.

Personally, I think 2E should retire and I'd get rid of Kolo. Not just because of last night - he's been a liability for a long, long, long time. Other than a brief period last year, the two things we've always been able to count on him for have been turnovers and getting beaten by his direct opponent. A defence consisting of SDK, J Henry, Stewart, Bews, Zuthrie, Mullin & Ratugolea is much more balanced than anything with Kolo in it, IMO.
Oh yeah, forgot O'Connor. Yet another one in the same mould. And Duncan for that matter.

When you think about it, 6'3" and slow really seems to be our defensive blueprint. Opposition coaches must look at that and salivate.

Not that they're not good players on an individual level (Kolo excepted). It's that they're all too similar. We need some variation to cope with the variation in forward lines across the comp. With speed at the top of the wishlist.

Given last nights result I think the message to Mackie and Wells will be very direct.

“We’ll free up cap space with retirements and delisting’s — you blokes get Darcy Parish and Bailey Smith over the line.”

Failing those two, I think the bloke that fits the inside bull, clearances need, is Matt Crouch. I think we’ll take a serious look if Crows move him on.

Continued development of Bruhn / Holmes / Knevitt and land a couple of those names above, and we’ll hold on to have another crack.

A full season from Cam Guthrie will help.

I thought that the latest information was to forget Parish & he wasn’t coming to Geelong - what’s changed in the last week?

Re Kentsable

He'll come cheap.

Are they claiming inside knowledge, or are they just venting?
Apparently McClure said there's next to no chance he's at the Dogs next year.

Granted, it's McClure...but that's now three separate sources suggesting he's out.

Plus, apparently McClure is very close to Connors management group. It's some of his only trustworthy info, and they're the ones who manage Smith.

He's hasn't signed.
Bombers poo.
Red dog signed first.
Bombers want a big key back.

No money for Parish..

The pies 'digging in' only worked because a 3rd club helped them out (hawks) otherwise they would have had to take p25 or henry would have gone to the psd. Sav is the same scenario except i cant see any club wanting to help us out in a 3 way with port.

We will be lucky to get more than p37 its just reality sadly. We have no hand to play.

Strongly disagree.

Pies has said they would’ve sent him to the psd, it’s on record. Now we don’t know for sure but either way, for the reasons o mentioned, Mackie won’t take pick 40. It’ll be their first offer and we will refuse.

We will ask for their future first. They’ll say no and it’ll be something in between.

Give the team a little more credit. There’ll be more negotiation for someone port have been chasing for over a year, I you’ll you’ll be pleasantly surprised

Maybe so, but the same poster who tonight said:

posted these just a week ago - seems there’s a bit of contradiction & changes to wording in the space of 7/8 days

From what I’ve heard the club is positioning itself for something along these lines.

- Retain Esava

- Bring in Doedee

- SDK will end up spending more time as a key forward

- Hawkins plays in 2024 but will be held back to get through the year in good shape

- And forget the talk on Parish. I think you’ll find that Worpel is the inside mid target

- Crouch (Adelaide) the other they’ll look closely at

I've been a fan of him in the past, but surely they sack him now.

It's the problem with perennial underachieving clubs. The bloke who finally gets them success is the second coming of christ and never gets told to leave.

Just look at the Saints. Doing everything they can to make it '09 & '10 again...and they didn't even win a flag!!!

McClure was part of the Xavier College inner sanctum when Smith was captain.

They kind of do. We need at least one or two stars to be premiership competitive. We don't have that any more.
Smith, Parish & Cam Guthrie into our midfield changes everything. That's at bare minimum 3 guys who are going to get you 25-40 a week.

We've said all year we don't even need a dominant midfield, we just need a competent midfield.

Those three coming in plus Holmes, Knevitt & Bruhn with another pre-season brings us right back to having one of the better groups in the game.
