As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

We're a sneaky chance on Smith I think. If Beveridge stays it helps our chase as the relationship between those two is very average it seems. The coaches ego will win out and they'll move him on I reckon. I think there's also a bit more to Smith's indiscretions than what the media has gone with, so it might be that a change of scenery is what he and his manager thinks is needed.

Parish won't be at Geelong I don't think. We went hard but the door was closed recently by player and manager.
Usually I hear whispers of some sort by now but there's been crickets.

When Kolo isn't getting a game we'll know the team has been improved. He's been a serviceable and also a lucky player; his strength was marking but he doesn't get so many these days it seems to me.

We very obviously need more class down back ie. someone who gets the ball and uses it well.

Melbourne are trying to get Harley Reid.

Would they take our pick 7/8 for 15 and 24 and use 5 and 7/8 as well as a F1 to get the #1 pick?

It's something Nth would think about if they received pick 2 for McKay.

Give it until this time next week when half the teams are done for the year, and I think things will kick into gear.

The word I had mid season was that Geelong and Parish was likely, but that seems unlikely now. So yes, crickets on that deal for a little while now. Who knows what deals have been discussed and agreed to in principle? If we think back to previous years, there's always a few surprise movements, and it seems that when it all comes out, the discussions and details had played out during the season.

It does seem like there is less floating around this time of year compared to previous years though. When the attention is on B graders like Ben McKay, Esava and James Worpel it's a fair indication I think.

The Roos are reportedly in to Dylan Stephens - with his upside he would be a good get for us if we had anything to trade, and possibly a more realistic option than Parish/Smith.

Last year I wanted Flanders but others here questioned him and now of course that he's starring and Hardwick is heading North he'll want to stay.

First for Smith, Doedee and Parish FA and that’s a massive haul. Get it done. Especially while we still have Hawkins, Cameron and Danger.

Personally don't see the point for North.

There's only so many first rounders you can take. It's not like West coast who are bad AND old, and perhaps therefore need an injection of good young talent. North have got plenty of young players, many of whom are already first rounders. If I were them, and Harley Reid is as good as others are saying, there's basically no way i'd be trading that out unless you're getting a bonafide A grade player in return.

I'm not a huge fan of adding guys who won't move the needle just because they're cheap. I'd rather just back our list managers in to add the best players they can through the draft.

Parish & Smith may be pricey (Parish $$$, Smith draft wise) but they will move the needle and add immediate excitement and expectation to what we can do next year.

If we can't add them, I'd just be going to the draft and backing the kids in.

Flanders would be an awesome get too, but I suspect he sticks around for at least one year to see what Dimma can do.

Why wouldn’t people want Smith Or Parish? They’d immediately be in a best half dozen - dozen players. How long do people think a rebuild actually takes? Even if it’s still 4-5 years that makes Smith 26 and Parish 30. And it’s not like they’d be keeping our elite (lol) youth out of a game. Take out Izzy, Tuohy, Duncan, Rohan, Hawkins and probably Danger in the next 1-2 years and that’s already 6 spots ready to go. There’s plenty of room for Smith/Parish and our young players

I agree both Parish and especially Smith - awesome at his best - would improve us, but I haven't read a thing to suggest it's likely we'll get either. but happy if we do.

As for going to the draft our Rd 1 selections over the years have been underwhelming - Clark hopefully excepted. I would love us to get an injury-free A-grader with our first pick this year.

Problem with our current pick 8
If North do get a FA compo, there’s that and 2 other NGA bids, possible 3 if North get there wish.
That turns our current pick of 8 out to 12

True, but every side has those players and it's been that way for over 150 years.

In today's era, probably more than ever. The benchmark side has Dan McStay, Billy Frampton & Oleg Markov playing crucial roles.

Kolo will never be a superstar, and he's easily replaceable, but I just don't see him as a huge problem.

We've got an ordinary player in our bottom 6...so does everyone else.
McStay is a pretty good player, while Frampton and Markov struggle to get a game when Collingwood has few injuries.

Part of the problem with Kolo is that he is a defender who often takes an important opposition forward. If you have to play an ordinary player you want them to be somewhere where they're not going to be too costly, which is NOT there. We need those guys to be reliable and dependable, and he's not.

To be frank, he's just not up to those jobs most of the time. I reckon that if you go back over his career, you'll find that his opponent is often the one who tears us a new one (I'll admit I don't have any stats for that, it's based on observation). And at his age, if he's not there now, he's never going to be.

I reckon we are a good chance for Smith. He wants more mid-time and isn't getting it at the dogs. One year left on his contract, but there is a real crunch on for the dogs next year where it comes to contracts finishing, so the dogs might look to get something for Smith now as he doesn't really fit into their plans. I reckon he is gone from the dogs this year, especially if they dont give Bevo the flick.

None of that is to say he will come to Geelong, but we can probably afford him and give him the time he wants in the middle.

It irks me that people still bring this up. Pick 7 is still pick 7 ... players are off the draft boars so it doesn't affect the pick.

I think no chance north don't just pick Harley Reid.
If bulldogs beat us ( and carlton beat GWS), we could have pick 6 or 7, them say 11 and 17 even
I would see who misses out on pick 4 from Gold Coast and trade with one of them.
Bulldogs might do 7, 2024r3 for 11,17,2024 r2.
Pretty biased in our favour, but we have to ask the question.

How about a handshake arrangement with the Dogs? We'll put all our stars in for surgery and allow them to win this week, making the finals to save face. In exchange they offload Baz for two second rounders, Stringer-style.

From memory off the top of my head, I've heard this:

- Disharmony amongst the playing group

- 'Casual racism' directed at indigenous players, particularly Tarryn Thomas (Can't believe this is still an issue in 2023)

- Senior players essentially just happy to be there for the paycheck. Don't really care about the results as the losing culture is so embedded into the club now and they don't feel like it's their responsibility to change it. Key culprits are allegedly their two captains.

- Real party/piss up culture amongst the group. Similar to the above, it's very much a 'Win, lose, who cares? We're getting paid either way' sort of thing.

Again, all just rumours....but if any of it is true, would it really surprise anyone? That's 3 straight spoons and 4 years of genuinely pathetic football.

That last one would be an issue at a lot of clubs I'd say. Young, immature men with celebrity status on a huge amount of money rarely ends well.

Would rather smith anyway, as long as we keep him level headed he has far more upside the Parish

You're simply overeating Zerk-Thatcher. A player like him is best served out of an oven.
ZT by most metrics has had a better season than Kolo this year despite the fact he has had to take the KPF multiple times. I don't shit on Kolo for getting smoked by Rioli for the same reason I don't shit on ZT for getting smashed by Hogan, they had no other options and its on the coaches for them to have those opponents.

But ZK this year has been better than Kolo.
More rebound 50s, more possessions, more tackles, more marks, far far more contested and uncontested disposals and significantly more intercepts and one percenters.

Its also comparing someone with 50 games in ZT who is still green and making mistakes, vs Kolo who is on 173 games and should know better.

It irks me that people still bring this up. Pick 7 is still pick 7 ... players are off the draft boars so it doesn't affect the pick.
It can irk you as much as you like but the fact is all of those NGA and compo picks will be before ours
If we had pick 2 it’s irrelevant but we don’t, so you take that in to account.
So would Sydney swap 12-22 for 8
No they wouldn’t

Would rather smith anyway, as long as we keep him level headed he has far more upside the Parish
I think people have very quickly forgotten the form Smith was in during 2021 and the SF/PF, and that he was even better in 2022. His drop off this year hasn't even been that bad, 2023 Smith would be one of our better players.

He apparently wants to leave to play more midfield, if we can get him at reasonable cost absolutely do it.
