As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Ah the ol' 'Pick is worth less because it's lower but draftees aren't accessible so it doesn't matter anyway', argument.

After going through this a zillion times, I've come up with a visual analogy, to help those who don't seem to quite grasp it.

You line up at a theater, and people get given tickets based on when they arrived (draft order on draft night after Trade, NGA, FS, Compo, Academy locks order in).

You walk into the theater one by one in order, and you go to to choose your seat. When you enter the theater, you notice that there are varying rows in different areas of the theater that all have 'Reserved' signs on them (NGA/FS/Academy/Compo, picks).

These reserved signs are all over the theater, and most are in the best spots, but there are still a fair few good seats left. You take the one just behind the row of reserved seats in the best position (open draft).

As more people filter in, they have to avoid the reserved signs too, and end up with crappier and crappier seats as the queue gets towards the end (draft order pushed back).

*************

Due to people purchasing their seats in advance due to different rules that apply to them - VIP's, people who had something to do with the movie, competition winners etc. - those reserved seats are not available to the general public. They might be able to grab one of the good seats if no-one shows up (bid not being matched), but largely, they have to take what is available to them in the open market.

Those seats were never available to them, so they shouldn't be acting as if they ever had a shot at attaining them. Same goes with the open draft vs bidding on players that are essentially 'pre listed', or outside the draft mechanisms available to the rest of the league.

I can see both sides of the debate...especially when you add NGA exemptions and FA comp.

Lets take it right back to u18's. Top kids like Dacois or AShcroft.. or this year Walter take a spot up in the champs and on the list. Is it the player you miss out on or is the player that misses development because a Father Sons or NGA etc are in one of thsoie spots. Years ago I can remember some parents unhappy that GAblett was give a spot at the Falcons..He was not yet the player he would become..and some thought it was based on name. Having the players that are already aligned do thin the pool. You get less chance to see an available kid.

Once the draft comes around all the players that are aligned are basically stealth players. You have not really looked ta them. They are not available. Forgoing that you can bid on them, to set a value..they are never available to you unless a bid is not matched. And as its discounted..its rarely not matched. So this year GC might have 4 stealth players , 3 in talent might be top10 but the bid will not be that early for the three. So a club with P10 ..might call the player out 13 and it would have been te player at 10 ..if those stealth players were excluded from the draft.

I guess the ticket to the footy finals is about right. You logon . 1 minutes after its open and find out you already cant access the best seats. That you can only buys up in the Gods. Do you feel like you missed out. They were never available to you. Imagine if the seats were allocated based on draft order. You would be peeved not getting the best seats that your low finished earned.

In the end ...you cant make everyone happy all of the time. The draft is a compromised. It is a system designed to try to balance talent allocation yet we have other mechanisms that sort of mess it up.

So ESPN have George Stevens ranked at #14 in the upcoming draft.
Interesting they compare him to Luke Parker… albeit 15kgs heavier.
Lucky we are need of Tall defenders, small defenders and Tall Key Forwards.

Is that a real 14 or including the stealth players? So in real term maybe 11 or 12?

Smith and 17 for 8 is a trade I don't mind

I think it depends what sweetener we’d need to put in. We’re likely to have a fair few retirements next year, so would need to keep as many of next year’s pick as possible.

In isolation that’s a great deal because it allows us to fill a list spot with a good player without any net loss in picks worth taking in this year’s draft.

So you know how Eddie came to the club when Stengle came?

Do you think if we get Bailey Smith we could entice Warwick Capper to come in for a year or two?

Do we really want this at Geelong?

A lot of our boys have done similar shows for the same promoter, including GAJ and Danger. He did one with Scarlo and Boris last year.

Just a Sportsman's Night concept really.

Take away the academy players he was 10th or 11th depending on Sanders scenario.
Thats the August ESPN power ranking.

Thats premature imo. Lets see how he goes at the combine.. If he can show something on the running side... he may well be R1

Who is doing that is it still Knightmare?

Was going to say that.

Though, they're never quite marketed from this particular angle :p

but hasn't this particular player had issues dealing with public life? How much would he be on? Why do that stuff. Just focus on football?

Maybe he's had issues dealing with football life and this is a way to let off steam or something? Be himself a bit (in a Warwick Capper kinda way).

I don't begrudge him cashing in on his star power. His career could end tomorrow

Maybe he's worked through some of those issues? No idea really, but they do seem to be popular with a lot of high profile players.
