As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

As for Phillipou, whether his “confidence” is a good or bad thing depends on what comes with it.

If he’s got determination, drive, work ethic and willingness to learn from those more experienced than him, then he might make it.

If not…

Don’t know if anyone remembers Hawthorn’s pick immediately before Joel Selwood in the 2006 draft. Mitch Thorp. Stellar underage record, and had a lot of self-confidence. By all accounts walked into the club with an ego bigger than Donald Trump’s. Had plenty of talent, but thought he was a bit too much of a superstar in the making to serve an apprenticeship. How do you think that worked out for him?

Phillipou might be a hugely talented player, but he has a little too much of the Mitch Thorps for my liking. I don’t think that sort of arrogance fits with the Cats. No thanks.
Apparently Thorpe was playing on Harley in the reserves as Harley was getting back from jury, and at the start of the game Thorpe told Harley he was going to end his career. Harley was a premiership captain that year. Ha !

Interesting the Sydney guy Beatson thinks there is a clear top 7. Then a step down to a group of 10 and then another drop off where it’s incredibly even.

We have pick 8
How convenient for him to rate to a pick that is held by the team who just flogged you in a GF
There’s a clear 10 IMO

Doesn't mean the 7 he rates will go 1-7

Exactly what I thought. He might not have say Phillipou, Ginbey, or Mackenzie in his Top 7. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Sydney's looked like this, for example:

1. Ashcroft
2. Wardlaw
3. Sheezel
4. Cadman
5. Humphrey
6. Clark
7. Tsatas

Then their next Top 10 might be:

8. Mackenzie
9. Ginbey
10. Phillipou
11. E. Allan
12. Busslinger
13. O. Hollands
14. Jefferson
15. George
16. J. Fletcher
17. E. Hewett

Pretty simple how we then can easily still end up with someone decent - just on the basis of where different clubs have players ranked.

Yeah I dunno that you should be worrying about our run & spread in a few years.

That was one thing we did much better in 2022 than previously, and if you look at where it came from, it was names like Holmes, Close, Miers and Stengle. From the older set you would only really add Isaac Smith to that list. And we have a ton of younger guys already on the sidelines waiting to add to it.

As for midfield versatility, sure, based on our current list in 3-4 years you'd assume Danger, Blicavs, Guthrie are gone, and so the core mid group might be Atkins, Parfitt, Bowes, Bruhn. If you add Jhye Clark, that's a bunch of pretty standard 6 footers in a world where 6'4" mids are becoming increasingly common. It's also weighted more inside than outside. But maybe Holmes is playing a lot more mid time by then. Maybe O Henry is too. Maybe Knevitt makes it. Maybe we draft another couple of 190cm running mids in the next year or two. Maybe we bring in someone else from the outside - we've certainly shown a willingness to do that.

Bottom line: whoever we take at pick 7 (8) this year is not gonna dictate what our midfield looks like in 3-4 years time. Could well be a very important piece of it, but only one piece.

Just one more thing on Tsatas: this is a gut feeling and may be completely unfair to the kid, but I'm just not sure he's got the stomach for the contest. A couple of times I've seen him almost seem to flinch and shy away slightly when anticipating contact. And if he's doing that to avoid some 17yo who might weigh 65kgs wringing wet, what's he gonna do when it's Petracca or Dusty Martin or Patrick Cripps bearing down? Maybe I'm being harsh on him, but I don't like it. That sh*t gets shown up big time at AFL level. I don't care how much burst speed he's got, if can't get that out of his game then his career will be severely limited.
Tsatas averages more clearances than Clark. Every top 10 pick has an area of concern. Draft for talent and back in the club to develop them. Tsatas has a bucket load of talent. He offers a point of difference from most midfielders.
I'm more inclined to trust Cal's sources than anyone else's. People are shocked he has Phillipou going to the Saints at pick 10, but I think people have been sucked in by Mattaes' overconfidence. His numbers simply aren't that great.

The SANFL U18 program is extremely weak, all the guns are either playing private school footy or reserves/league. He only earned three reserves games, averaging 14 touches. He also only averaged 17 disposals in the U18 champs. People talk about Ginbey being low production, he averaged 21 at the champs.

Phillipou domiated SANFL U18s (avg. 30 disp), but so did Jakob Ryan (avg. 28 disposals at U18 level, 20 at reserves level). Billy Dowling averaged 31 in SANFL U18s. Nick Sadler averaged 23 across four league and reserves games. These guys are all rated late draft-rookie options.
Phillipou looked absolutely dominant in the first U18 and first Q of the 2nd game before he got injured. He played through injury trying to help his team. Just made the draft by a few days so plenty of development left. He was also dominant up forward in the U18.

Remember the name.... Seth Campbell, have herd that Geelong has talked to him in the pass week, tipped to go late pick or rookie ..

HOLY CRAP!

"It was there where he (Seth Campbell) produced arguably his standout performance, booting 10.6 from 32 disposals to leap firmly onto the draft radar."

No one is ever going to trade for the next pick. WC would know that if we were genuinely interested in the player we would just pick them. If we were willing to trade then we were never going to pick them anyway and WC are giving an extra pick away for nothing. It would be Hawthorn that WC would try to trade with to jump ahead of us to take one of the WA players if they knew we were interested.
Been done before, as shown above... But if we phoned them and said we are happy to take Gibney now, but as he is a WA boy, we will negotiate our draft position if you really want him, you can take our Pick 7 + 58 for your 8 + 26. An example. They lock in the player they want but at a cost. Don't have to be cheeky about it, we can position it when we ask them we are happy to take the 2nd next best option, if you want to give up pick 8 + 26 for Gibney

Did they say that??
They’d be pretty silly to be saying that, but reading into what they have said it sounds like they’ll return to wa at some point. Allen obviously has pretty deep footy roots in wa. Ginbey is from dunsborough and although he could get some similar vibes being down the surf coast it wouldn’t surprise if he wanted to head back home and get to his community.
I just think it’s too big a risk to take with such an early pick for a club that has not had access to them.

They are all a risk... Me. I am not into the "Go Home Factor " TBH.
If we stuck to that principle in drafting we'd never had won any of the last 4 flags.
Back in the club, culture, success and all that goes with it.
Take the best talent if they have the best upside as well even better.
