Looking forward to both the reading period and draft at the end of the season it seems pretty obvious that we will go heavy on mids.

You’d think we will definitely see Tuohy retire. Hawkins, Rohan and Stanley I think are likely. Then it comes down to delisting and trades after that. Parfitt is done.

I don’t see us purging too many others. We can stagger further retirements in Dangerfield, Duncan, C.Guthrie and Bews down the track.

Bews is done if hes playing vfl all year (which he likely will be) either he will retire himself or we will delist him-ala dahlhaus.

I agree on bews, rohan (dempsey will go past him and i doubt he wants to stay to play 2s) parfitt and hawk (i think he will call time). Hopefully danger and duncan stay fit body wise so they can both keep going into 2025.
They could maybe try to keep stanley as depth backup but he might rather go too.

If that happens you have 5 changes before obvious delistings (murdoch and hardie would be odds on as would willis if he cant stay on the park).

I agree mids are a priority. We will also need a backup ruck if stanley goes-could be a cheap trade like we did with ceglar or a DFA type. Might need a backup kpd also if jeka looks like he wont make it.

I’m happy with Jeka whilst O’Sullivan is developing. Atm unless either SDK or J.Henry get injured we have reasonable depth in that area.

We also have to prepare or continue to prepare for life after Danger and C.Guthrie. That means bringing more elite mids onto our list. I’m not averse to B.Smith but only at a price. If we have a bottom 6 season then I’m holding the pick for the draft.

The talks of JUH must all a dream... I haven't seen any news articles of him being linked to us.. I think its more of smoke in the regards that he was is our zone before it got shifted
JC in his latest interview was giving him a lot of praises that really came out of nowhere

There might be some merit

The interesting thing with a lot of these retirements and fans in general claiming “oh look x and y retired it will decline you” don’t actually realize is that the decline of impact was already felt before they retired… either via poor form or playing VFL footy even.

If hawk kicks 50 there is every chance he goes around again… but if he drops off to a 25-30 goal kicker… then the decline was felt in 2024, not 2025.

It is rare that someone retires from your team in quality form… only two that come to mind are selwood and enright who left on a high. Majority get pushed out due to form

Great minds...I almost word for word made this post last week.

For instance last year we felt the collective decline (injuries or just old age) of Smith, Tuohy and Duncan. You could throw Bews on too.

2021ish we had to adapt to Dangerfield and Selwood no longer being able to sustain high quality football all game with high match minutes. Maybe even earlier.

Many more examples.

Dempsey on the other hand with his midfield potential will get those plaudits.

"If he can become that goal kicking forward/mid, those players are worth their weight in gold, and are the players who attract the most attention even on their off days. It's one flash of brilliance and you're on social media all week"

yep.

Dempsey could become that midfielder we need to replace Selwood and Dangerfield. He wont be a permanent forward in 3 years time.

I said speaking about Dempsey in those first three VFL games of his I saw, the player he plays like most, is James Hird. Run, mark, kick, evade.
Rinse and repeat.

If he gets to that level watch out

Way to go yet, Hird in his playing days was special.

Correct or they get pushed out because of who has taken their spot or who the club plans to take their spot the following

I think the reality is in the detail… that winning a premiership is a very complex interplay of a lot of factors and cannot be simplified to an individual player.

Exactly my point.

Every footy fan can name half a dozen genuine C grade premiership players along with greats of the game who have never won one. My point was in reference to the inference that buddy didn’t win premierships (even though he won 2), so therefore wasn’t actually that good. When in reality he’s the best forward of a generation

I tend to feel that players find the role that they suit , even if they are capable doing much more. Demp as James Hird. Id never have thought of that but Hird was a late pick too that in this era would have seen him as a rookie. Its funny how we can compare snippets and then compare. In my mind I can see bits and pieces of different players , even Michael Turner at times yet nothing like him most of the time. What can he be down the track might depend on body shape that he evolves. he is tall enough to be more than a flighty outside player. He is quick and has hops, he has enough as kt is but still is no where near what might be if he is willing to out the work in. Left foot for example. One thing is for sure. Less than 10 games and he look now to be a serious top 25 player and he has gone past several others on our list.

Obviously still have the whole season to play but the top end of the draft at this stage is looking very mid heavy. So that’s pretty good for us.

He also has swagger about him. He's just a naturally confident player, which I rarely see in someone so young.

U may be right on Bewsy.
But i can't see anyone we have that can play on the speedy small crafty forwards that give us grief.
Sometimes you don't realise what u have until it's gone i guess.
I know him thru my daughters and such and he did have a really great preseason and was up and about prior to the season start.
IMO he has plenty to give this season so i wouldn't discount seeing him this year.
After that?? Who knows... but at 31 next birthday doesn't do him any favours.

When is tassie impacting the draft??
Not this decade IMO as that stadium in it's current form isn't get built.
The AFL marketing department and their Lobbyists have a mountain to move.
FWIW if the Roos and Hawks are able to play there I can't see why there needs to be a 2 billion stadium to be built.
The AFL taking their cues from the NFL MLB and NBA owners by holding cities states and taxpayers to ransom.
I think we are a little smarter than the yanks.... I hope. lol.

I dunno, he seemed a bit nervy with his first few kicks that he mangled. Same with his previous games and missing gettable ones.

Once he got the ball to Henry and the umpires let off the bad kick with a free I think he settled and then he was confident.

Just needed one big game to get him in

Besides an elite mid we also really need to find a youngish lockdown defender for smalls to take over from Bews who is obviously done or very close to it.

That is unless Mullin comes along fast or we transition someone like Shark into that role.
Pop a bag of doritos and keep watching because I think you might find yourself surprised

They'll kick the team off without a stadium I'm my opinion.
