That’s the first time I’ve ever been worried about Stengle leaving and that article is damning.
If any of that is true then he’s already gone IMO

Maybe my hypothetical last week can come to fruition
Yeah I'm with you Calder_daddy, I thought the same thing that he would stay, but now I'm thinking the opposite, especially Gullan writing this article

Yeah I'm the same as you... I might be old fashioned in these things.. Geelong gave him another chance at AFL, and helped into a comfortable zone in looking after him. As Geelong culture is well know in the way players is known to be a AFL player... And if he leaves Geelong from what we gave him...
I don't like it.

I think he might be going. Hes got a PS medal back playing good footy and driving his price up really close to eddie Betts even tho is about a hour away.he'll get extra cash, down side the cats won't get a good enough pick imo.
Not much loyalty in footy these days .

Yeah Scotty Gullen should have a bit more inside word on the Cats than your average reporter. It's not good

Thing is though, how do we only have $600k to offer? We have basically no one contracted. Says to me they're expecting big fish to land this year

Been reported 800k for him..

Compare the pair what would Rankin be on who offers mid CBA time plus kicks goals.

He chose us from multiple options as a delisted free agent. We have gained a lot from him already without giving anything up for him. I hope he feels loyal to us but we didn't go out of our way to get him or "save his career", he chose us and we were lucky he did.

Like i said... im old fashioned... Loyalty and giving back is what I believe in...

and he paid the club back with an AA season in a premiership year. how many delisted free agent can say that. if he does go and the money difference was substantial, i have no issues. good luck to him.

I don't disagree at all, I believe in loyalty and giving back....I just question how balanced that view is in these circumstances. He also gave us a chance by choosing us, if he didn't perform, we wouldn't have been loyal to him. It goes both ways.

I really hope he feels loyal to us and I think staying at Geelong is the right move for him (but I'm biased).

He chose us over other options and he was a massive part of a premiership.

He owes us nothing

Does the loyalty go both ways? If someone is offering him $200k extra to do the same job, is the club supposed to be loyal and give back by paying him more to stay?
Look guys... we are all allowed for our own opinions. And that's fine... im just old fashioned in the way I have been brought up. In work ( which I have been asked to go to different roles of my work with different opposition in work ) and playing Country Football ( which is peanuts, compare to Gold Nuggets AFL ) I'm a loyal person, it's just the person I am... And I personally ( and this a opinion) I think Geelong has probably has helped as person just as more then being a Footballer
And if Stengle is thinking of money 💰, that's his choice...

It’s the only thing that makes sense
We should have cash to burn, we should have enough for more than one big fish.
Who else would be getting paid handsomely?
Cameron, Danger and Stewart
Hawks and Duncan would be on above average
Possibly same goes with Blitz and Cuthrie but slightly higher.

Yeah...this mindset really doesnt apply anymore, and while i get it's your opinion, it's important to be realistic: we live in an era of free agency and much more liberal trading. Expecting players to be loyal "just cause feelings" is anachronistic to the way the business of football is and will further evolve into. We have benefited from that environment significantly over the last few years, and may well continue to if some of the rumors turn out to be true regarding Smith/Oliver/LDU etc.

Our philosophy of not overpaying players is fine and all, but i dont think $800k is overpaying for Stengle when the salary cap itself is about to explode for each club. You can argue he is a small forward so how important is he really? But to me, without him, our forward line this year would be a disaster. Pay the man what he wants.

Bit surprised over the casual attitudes of some regarding Stengle possibly leaving.

I’d personally be gutted. He’s one of our best players and would hurt the team massively if he goes.
Mannagh won’t just come in and replace him. No one will.
Stengle is all class, a rare talent and the club would be mad to let him go. You do everything you can to keep your best players.
Jez is on a mill ffs and has been utterly useless as of late.
Pay Tyson what he wants and be done with it.
Stengle is the best small forward in the AFL...

Stengle is our top performer in the forward line, showcasing X-factor and game-winning abilities.

He's likely to secure us a second-round draft pick, possibly in the late 20s after priority selections. We face the choice of trading one of our finest players for an untried 18-year-old who needs years of development. The alternative is to use the pick we get as spare change to get a high-calibre midfielder.

With the salary cap increasing, paying him the reported $800k seems viable and logical. Upcoming departures will create more salary space. Letting him go under this circumstance does not make sense and he should be paid to stay. You cannot offer him substantially less than what other clubs are willing to pay and call him disloyal.

Alternatively, if Stengle desires a change to a different environment, we wish him well and thank him for his service.

I believe we should pay him as he is too important to lose.

I imagine it's going to be a pretty bad result if we clear this cap space with stengle gone and then draft two kids in the teens

I love your thinking, but we can't always assume Geelong are the good guys in this even though we want them to be. I'm loyal. I'm loyal to work probably to a fault because I want to believe in good will and that loyalty is a thing, but you shouldn't do so blindly and to your own detriment if you aren't being treated fairly.

I assume Geelong is treating Stengle fairly. We've built a good reputation and there would be a value on Stengle that is fair enough for him to stay whilst still less than other offers. The day that we assume players should just stay with us based on reputation is the day we start to become an Essendon drinking bath water type.

Offer a fair value for Stengle and if he still goes that's how we maintain a good culture. Offer him unders and expect him to stay based on loyalty, that's when we start becoming a shit club.

Yeah, bad for the foreseeable future...but has the potential to be a masterstroke down the line.

Even if we get it right, we'd likely have to wear the brunt of looking like idiots for a few years until those kids develop.

If we don't get it right at all, we just look like idiots all together.

You'd want to think they have a plan, and I expect we do.
Yeah I don't think it's a master stroke to clear cap and pay it to no one though

Oh I agree, but if we pick up two gun kids in 5 years nobody will remember that part anyway.

Still doubt it happens that way regardless. If he goes, we have a plan, and it could very well be Smith this year and LDU next year.
It's not a bad draft for mid range picked mids but we are unlikely to get a stengle level player from the pick 22-27ish we get from him.

I think there's a good chance that if we don't use that cap and pick to add an experienced player then we might be worse in both the short and long term

Hope you reply back to me as you still ignore me 😝 is your mail still that Bailey Smith is heading to Geelong?
Nothing has changed.
My man with the info hasn’t walked his dog with me for a few weeks now.
So I’m sticking fat.
Bailey is coming.

Absolutely. If we aren’t going any higher than 600 and other teams are offering 800 then I don’t blame him.

It’s quoted in that article that “Geelong can’t go any higher than 600”
Surely they can. We will have a heap of players retiring at years end. Should be plenty of cap space.
He’s worth 800.
It reeks of very poor cap management if we cannot match 800k, which is fair enough value for him in the current market. We've lost players and should be planning on multiple big-time retirements coming up. I'd love to know where the money is being sucked up.
